Kamakou Nature Preserve with The Nature Conservancy
Our group had the opportunity to help The Nature Conservancy, and I'm glad we did. We had a blast off roading to the Kamakou preserve on the top of Moloka'i. First we were asked to scrub our shoes and clean our bags and equipment because they didn't want us bringing any non native species up to the almost 100% native forest. We off roaded over 10 miles up the dirt road to the preserve and lugged some lumber to rebuild parts of the oldest board walk in all of the Hawaiian Islands. As we were working on the board walk from Pelekunu Valley over look we enjoyed lots of native plants and even native wild life. We were fortunate to spot a few rare birds flying around and also a happy face spider. We spent a total of two days repairing the board walk. On the second day we came around to the Waikolu Valley over look. We spotted many waterfall chutes and some waterfalls that were coming down into the valley.
A big thank you goes out to The Nature Conservancy for letting us help at the boardwalk and transporting us up and down the mountain!

Waikolu Lookout in the Molokai Forest Reserve
I just drove 10 miles up the Maunahui-Makakupaia 4X4 road on Molokai Island, Hawaii. It is chilly and windy up here at Waikolu Lookout in the Molokai Forest Reserve. I’m looking down into Waikolu Valley. Clouds are touching the clifftops and drifting up and over the ridge to my right. Looks really neat.

Driving Up Maunahui-Makakupaia 4X4 Road to Waikolu Lookout in the Molokai Forest Reserve
I’m about five miles up the Maunahui-Makakupaia 4X4 road on Molokai Island, Hawaii. Trying to get to a lookout that should be about another five miles ahead. Earlier this afternoon I switched out my rental vehicle. The breaks stopped working this morning on the rental van I had. The local man I rented from swapped me out to 4X4 Jeep. So why I don’t drive up the 4X4 road on my last day on Molokai? Try to get some more adventure in here before I fly to Maui Island tomorrow.
I’m not sure why this road exists. Passing 2,000 feet and entering the Molokai Forest Reserve.
5:55 p.m.: Just crossed above 3,000 feet. Should be a little less than three miles to the lookout now. Quite a fascinating forest up here. Fortunately I haven’t encountered any oncoming vehicles on this one-lane dirt road carved through the forest.
6:05 p.m.: Slightly above 3,500 feet, I reach Waikolu Lookout.
