Kamakura is a seaside Japanese city just south of Tokyo. The political center of medieval Japan, modern-day Kamakura is a prominent resort town with dozens of Buddhist Zen temples and Shinto shrines.
Its most recognizable landmark is the Kotoku-in Temple’s Great Buddha, a roughly 13m-high bronze statue still standing after a 15th-century tsunami. Yuigahama Beach on Sagami Bay is a popular surfing spot.

KAMAKURA, JAPAN - travel shorts
Kamakura (鎌倉) is a coastal town in Kanagawa Prefecture, less than an hour south of Tokyo.
Kamakura became the political center of Japan, when Minamoto Yoritomo chose the city as the seat for his new military government in 1192. The Kamakura government continued to rule Japan for over a century, first under the Minamoto shogun and then under the Hojo regents.
After the decline of the Kamakura government in the 14th century and the establishment of its successor, the Muromachi or Ashikaga government in Kyoto, Kamakura remained the political center of Eastern Japan for some time before losing its position to other cities. Today, Kamakura is a small city and a very popular tourist destination. Sometimes called the Kyoto of Eastern Japan, Kamakura offers numerous temples, shrines and other historical monuments. In addition, Kamakura's sand beaches attract large crowds during the summer months.

DAY TRIP: Kamakura and Yokohama
We spent a beautiful December day in Kamakura and Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture. In Kamakura, we explored Komachi street, Hachimangu Shrine, and went to a Shiba Cafe! Then we visited the Giant Buddha and Hasedera Temple, where we got to see a gorgeous view of the sea.
Then we went to Yokohama, which is only 30 minutes from Kamakura and on the way back to Tokyo. There we went to Chinatown, a Christmas Market, and got to see the illuminations of the ferris wheel at night.
It was sure a day to remember!

Nice day to visit the black sand beaches of Kamakura. Lots of surfers, partying and people enjoying life.
We spent most of the day searching for the giant buddha and then celebrated with some drinks on the beach. Awesome spot to check out if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the Tokyo city centers for a while.

Hasedera Temple:
Hasedera is a temple of the Jodo sect, that is most famous for its statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The statue shows Kannon with eleven heads, each representing a characteristic of the goddess. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan, and can be viewed in the temple's main building, the Kannon-do Hall.
Kotokuin Temple:
The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 43.79 feet, it's the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple.
The statue was cast in 1252 and was originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since 1495 the Buddha has been standing in the open air.
