The Great Buddha,Kamakura (鎌倉 大仏)
The statue commonly known as Kamakura Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Kamakura), a colossal copper image of Amida-butsu (Amitabha Buddha), is the principle image of Kotoku-in. The fact that it sits in the open air makes it unusual amongst large Buddha statues in Japan.
The Great Buddha, designated a National Treasure by the Japanese government, is some 11.3 meters tall and weighs around 121 tons. Though in size it falls short of the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple at Nara (an image of Rushana-butsu [Vairochana Buddha]), it essentially retains its original form; as such it is an invaluable example of Japanese historical Buddhist art.

Birth of Kamakura Art
This clip briefly describes the origins of what is referred to as the birth of Kamakura Art in Japan. With the burning of the original Todai-ji in 1180, the Kei school (慶派), then headed by Kokei (Unkei's father), won the bid to refurnish the reconstructed Todai-ji with buddhist art. By the time the art had been carved and dedicated, Unkei had risen to the head of the Kei school, issuing forth a new era which is now referred to as the Renaissance of Japanese Art.
Kamakura (6) Tsurugaoka-hachimangu Shrine 「鎌倉(6)-鶴岡八幡宮」
Tsurugaoka-hachimangu Shrine is the center of Kamakura. Minamoto-no-Yoritomo, the first Shogun of the Kamakura Government, established this shrine to worship their guardian god. Its Honmiya (Main Shrine) is really majestic, but other than that there are lots of things to see in the precincts of the Shrine, such as the Maiden ( House for dancing), the Kamakura National Treasure House, the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Genpei-Pond, etc.
Those who come to Kamakura never fail to visit this and pray for various good things even if they are not a believer in Shintoism.

[006] aichi Osu Kannon Temple
Osu Kannon is a popular Buddhist temple in central Nagoya. It was originally built during the Kamakura Period (1192-1333) in neighboring Gifu Prefecture. The temple was then moved to its current site by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612 after repeated damage from severe flooding frequently took place. The current buildings are those reconstructed in 20th century.
The main object of worship at the temple is a wooden Kannon statue, the goddess of mercy. It was carved by Kobo Daishi, one of most important figures in Japanese Buddhism. There is a Shinpukuji Library underneath Osu Kannon's main hall, where over 15,000 classic Japanese and Chinese texts are housed. Among these texts, there are several national treasures and important cultural properties, such as the oldest copy of the Kojiki, a chronicle of the early history of Japan including its mythological origins.
A flea market took place monthly on the temple grounds on the 18th and 28th. The modestly sized market includes about 60 stalls that sells everything such as antiques, souvenirs, second hand goods and clothes. Just beside the temple, there is an entrance to the Osu Shopping Arcade, a network of aging but charming covered shopping streets with over 400 shops and restaurants. The area is recognized as a counterpart to Tokyo's Akihabara district as in both areas, there are a lot of stores that specialize in electronics, cosplay, anime, J-pop and idol goods.
Access information
Osu Kannon Temple is only a few steps from Osu Kannon Station on the Tsurumai Subway Line. Take the Higashiyama Subway Line at Nagoya Station and transfer to the Tsurumai Line at Fushimi Station. It takes about ten minutes from Nagoya Station to the temple and costs 200 yen for one way.
Alternatively, the temple is a 5-10 minute walk from Kamimaezu Station on the Tsurumai and Meijo Subway Lines, through the shopping arcade next to the temple.

Kofukuji Temple used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, which is the most powerful family clan over much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was founded in Nara at the same time as the capital foundation in 710. At the height of Fujiwara domination, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.
Today there remain a couple of buildings of great historic importance, including a five story pagoda and a three story pagoda. The five story pagoda is 50 meter tall, ranking second in Japan, after the five story pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple with only seven meter gap. Kofukuji's pagoda is both a landmark and symbol of Nara. It was first built in 730, and most recent reconstruction was done in 1426.
While addmission to Kofukuji's temple grounds is free and it can be entered around the clock, there are two areas that require addmission fee: Kofukuji's National Treasure Museum and the Eastern Golden Hall. The National Treasure Museum, recently renovated, exhibits part of the temple's great art collection and is something that must not miss out on for lovers of Buddhist art. Among the many outstanding exhibits, the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue is one of the most renowned Buddhist statues in all of Japan.

Japan's first full-scale capital was established in the year 710 at Heijo, the city today known as Nara. As city's powerful buddhist monasteries had come to have more and more influence and political ambitions, it became a serious threat to the government, causing the capital to be moved to Nagaoka in 784.
Nara is located less than one hour from Kyoto and Osaka. Because of its history as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest and largest temples. Eight temples, shrines and ruins remain in Nara.
