It's just not a Japanese summer without fireworks! The sight of the traditionally made fireworks exploding in the night sky makes you forget the heat of summer and never fails to draw an ooh and ah from the crowd. In the Kyoto area there are a few festivals that offer fireworks shows, one of them being the Kameoka Heiwa-sai Hozugawa Hanabi Taikai.
Held in August, the festival takes place along the Hozugawa river in Kameoka, a city over the mountains to the west of Kyoto. Though it takes a bit of time to get there, over 75,000 people are said to have visited to enjoy the festival last year! Head out to Kameoka with our team, sit back, and enjoy the fireworks!

亀岡祭は、京都府亀岡市で毎年10月に行われる鍬山神社の例祭である。
中でも10月23日から25日までの3日間行われる「山鉾行事」では、煌びやかな懸想品で飾られた「曳山」や「舁山」が城下町を彩ることから、「丹波の祇園祭」、「亀岡の秋祭り」などともいわれている。
The Kameoka Matsuri Festival is a reisai (regular festival) of Kuwayama-jinja Shrine that takes place for three days from October 23 to October 25 annually in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture.

対尾風の影響で山鉾が11のところを2騎しかでていませんでしたがゆっくり見学できました。口丹波の祇園祭と云われる亀岡祭。25日には山鉾巡行が予定されています。

Tamba Kokubun-ji Kameoka - Kyoto - 仏教寺院 - 4K Ultra HD
A remnant of a once larger temple from the Jodo sect and first built during the 8th century, Tamba Kokubun-ji is one of many Kameoka City major cultural properties as well as been designated a national historical site. Too often ignore by tourists, foreign or not, Tamba Kokubun-ji is a gorgeous little temple where time stands still.
Inside Kokubunji Temple grows a native ginkgo tree which has earned the name of Chichi Icho (Mother's Breast Ginkgo) and has long inspired the devout worship of women. Because this tree has been known to attach its seeds to its leaves, it is also called the Ohatsuki Icho (Leaf-sticking Ginkgo).

京都府亀岡市で開催される「亀岡祭り」は、鍬山神社の鍬山宮・八幡宮二社の例祭です。 11基の山鉾が巡行する様子から”丹波の祇園祭”とも呼ばれ親しまれています。

Samurai Parade - Akechi Mitsuhide Festival in Kameoka
Akechi Mitsuhide is a small festival held on May 3rd in Kameoka with a samurai parade, taiko drumming, and gun demonstration. Akechi Mitsuhide (1528-1582) was a samurai who joined the warlord Oda Nobunaga in his quest to unify Japan. Akechi took over the Tamba region and built a castle in Kameoka in 1577.
In 1582 he led an army from there to attack and kill his lord. There are several theories as to why the most popular being that he was avenging personal insults and the death of his mother which Oda Nobunaga was responsible for causing. This act earned Akechi Mitsuhide eternal infamy but in Kameoka they like him and put on this festival for him every year.

Kameoka Fireworks festival 2018 #kyoto
Heki-tei, Kameoka, Kyoto, Japan (へき亭 京都 亀岡)
へき亭 Hekitei is an old samurai’s residence out in nature away from the central part of Kameoka that has been renovated into a restaurant where one can enjoy home-style cuisine made from 京野菜Kyo-yasai (Kyoto vegetables) and colored with the respective season that one may visit. The restaurant serves only a certain number of parties a day so that each party has the ultimate dining experience, so calling in with a reservation is a must.
Hekitei has also been used as the location for a historical TV drama such as “朝がきたAsa ga Kita (Morning Has Come)” as well as TV variety shows.
When Megan came back to Kameoka for a short while in mid-May last year, Nakazawa-kun asked me if I wanted to join them and his family for lunch at Hekitei; of course I didn’t refuse☺. It would be my first time going although I’ve lived in Kameoka for 15 years.

Samurai Festival - Taira no Masakado Iwai-Bando Matsuri
On the second Sunday of November a samurai festival is held in the small (not too mention difficult to reach without a car) town of Iwai-Bando to celebrate the famous or rather infamous 10th Century samurai Taira no Masakado.
In 939 after several years of personal feuding in the Kanto area, Masakado declared himself Shinno (New Emperor) driving out government officials in the area and replacing them with his own followers.
In March 940 Masakado was finally defeated and killed. His head was taken to Kyoto but legends say it flew off on its own accord and landed in the Otemachi area of today's Tokyo where a shrine was built. Those who disturb the shrine have suffered from Masakado's wrath from beyond the grave.
The festival has a variety of activities - a main parade with horses, kyudo (Japanese archery), taiko drumming, mochi maki (throwing mochi cakes), and chanbara (movie-style sword fighting).
