It is located high on the top of Mount Haku and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The village has gained a reputation as a wonderfully traditional Japanese agricultural community, both in lifestyle and architecture.

The houses here have steeply pitched roofs to protect them from the heavy snows that fall here in the winter months.

Throughout the year, the countryside that surrounds Shirakawa Village presents a pleasant complement to the village buildings.

The trail between Magome and Tsumago is a well-maintained section of the former Nakasendo, the route that ran along the Kiso Valley and connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. The trail is not challenging and is well marked in English and Japanese. It is about 8 km long and should take 2 to 3 hours to complete at a leisurely pace.

The trail leads through the countryside and passes right alongside the houses and fields of local residents. The trail also intersects with the road and hikers must tread along asphalt for some portions. Despite this, walking along the Magome-Tsumago trail is a highly enjoyable part of visiting the Kiso Valley. From Magome to Tsumago involves less uphill walking than the opposite direction.

A baggage forwarding service is available through the towns' tourist information centers. Luggage must be dropped off at the information center between 8:30 am and 11:30 am and will be delivered to the other town's information center by 1 pm. The fee is 500 yen per item. The service is available daily from mid March through November but no such service during the winter.

There are a number of sighting bays along the way down from the Ine Bay fishing village center. This village center is located about 2 kilometers from the Cruise boat jetty.
