Wakayama Shingu City Oto Matsuri | JAPAN Forward
A team of roughly 2,000 men (referred to as noboriko) clad in white and sporting straw rope wrapped around their waists light pentagonal shaped torches with sacred fire in prayer for a good harvest and family safety. The view that unfolds as the men charge down from the shrine with torches in hand is as the lyrics of the Shingu-setsu song describe, like a flaming waterfall and winding fiery dragon. The festival is known as one of the most lively fire festivals in Japan. On the day of the festival, women are prohibited from the Kamikura-jinja Shrine grounds, but are able to watch the festivities from the path leading to the shrine.

JAPAN Forward aims to present the true face of Japan, as seen from a wide variety of perspectives, to a rapidly-changing world where unpredictability often outpaces stability. JAPAN Forward sets out to overcome misunderstandings born of linguistic barriers. In covering major news stories in Japan, along with key points of debate, current events, history, culture, and the arts, we hope to deepen the world’s understanding of the Japanese archipelago.
With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, there is a great need for a new English-language medium rooted in solid fact and fully cognizant of the history and culture of Japan and the Japanese people. Our expanding network of influential analysts and foreign experts based in Japan and overseas means that we are continuously improving our ability to bring the truth about Japan to an ever-wider English-speaking audience.

[Shinto Shrine 3D] Kamikura Shrine, Gotobiki Iwa, Kumano Taisha 神倉神社 ゴトビキ岩
Kamikura Shrine is located in Kumano-Shingu (Wakayama, Japan). A huge rock, so-called Gotobiki Iwa on the top of the mount is the object of worship. Here is one of the best spot to take 3D picture.

Shingu-shi Otou Matsuri (Fire Festival) 2012
Shingu hosts a fire festival on February 6th. Every year, men of all ages spend the day purifying themselves by abstaining from female contact and consuming white foods. Then, once it gets dark, they trek to the top of Mt. Gongen to Kamikura Shrine, the original site of the Kumano Hayatama Grand Shrine. The men are corralled at the top of the shrine and, once everyone has assembled and lit their torches, they open the gates and the men run down all 538 steps to the bottom of mountain. Participants race to the bottom of the mountain - with their torches - in hopes of obtaining peace and successful fertility.
Unfortunately it was pouring rain this year so I could only catch a group of the men from Hayatama going up the mountain, but KumanoWorld uploaded some great videos from last year's festival. Hopefully next year will have better weather!

Shingu City (Part One) - Things you should do on Day One!
I went to Shingu City in the Eastern Peninsula of Wakayama on Monday 16th of October 2017 to Tuesday 17th.
Usually, people do their annual pilgrimage in this area to climb Koya-san and visit the range of temples along the way to cleanse the human spirit.
If you're in Shingu City, consider this itinerary as Day One!
1. Jofuku Sushi
Considered Wakayama's best Sushi. Try out their Sanma Sushi, one of their local specialties.
2. Jofuku Koen.
One of the special areas in Shingu. Known as one of the resting areas of Xu Fu as he was trying to find the Elixir of Life.
3. Matsubaya
A sweets shop in Shingu City that has been run three generations of family.
4. Hayatama Taisha.
UNESCO World Heritage Site. A place to visit and see.
5. Kumano Boat Festival.
Occurring every year on the 16th of October. To celebrate the year of the Kumano Taisha. 9 boats race to an island in the middle of the river following after a Mikoshi, boarded on a boat.

Oh!
Wakayama Oto Fire Festival | JAPAN Forward
Full Story: ????
It turns out that wishing for the cold to subside and a fruitful spring to unfold is a more common sentiment than one might think. At Kamikura Shrine in Shingu city, Wakayama Prefecture, this idea is taken to a whole new fiery level.
Every year on February 6, the Oto Festival takes place to wish for a good harvest and good health. Simply speaking, it’s one of the most lively and famous fire festivals in Japan.
Men all ages – dressed in white with a thick rope tied around their waist – congregate at the shrine carrying a wooden torch.
As the excitement rises, the torches are lit on fire. At 8 P.M. the scene that unfolds is of roughly 2000 brightly lit torches carried by men racing down the 500 steps leading to Kamikura Shrine, making for a blur of warm yellow light illuminating all the surroundings.
