Ginzan Onsen, Japan - Ginzan Onsen Hot Spring Resort Town (2019)
Ginzan Onsen (銀山温泉) is an onsen (hot spring) area in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its name means silver mine hot spring. Ginzan Onsen's economy took off thanks to its booming silver production and eventually transitioned over to tourism when it opened up dozens of hot spring resorts along the central river that runs through the town. The mountains that surround this town yield rich hot spring water that is used both in the private hotels and public baths in the city center.
Ginzan onsen became nationally famous as it was featured in the popular television drama Oshin. Each year this onsen village sees hundreds of thousands of domestic Japanese visitors.
Internationally, this town saw a sharp rise in foreign tourism thanks to the famous snow covered sights in the winter. It has since been featured on international travel sites and agencies across the world. CNN has even suggested that this onsen town may be Japan's most charming winter village.
Fossils from the Miocene era have been found in the vicinity.
Note that access to this town requires riding a bus or taking a short taxi ride. There is more information on accessing Ginzan Onsen on their Japanese website.

Bukeyashiki Samurai Residence - Shimane - 武家屋敷
The Bukeyashiki is a traditional samurai residence built after the great fire of 1733. It is located in the center of Matsue City alongside the moat of Matsue Castle. It was occupied by successive samurai of middle rank status of the Matsue domain, who periodically had to change their residence.
This particular samurai residence consists of a variety of structures including a nagaya-style gate, also known as Nagayamon, as well as the main building, and a small garden.

Japanese high speed train yamagata
Japanese high speed train yamagata
the Yamagata Shinkansen is a line of Japanese high-speed trains, commonly-known as bullet trains, run by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Opened in 1999, the line connects the capital city of Tokyo with Shinjo, located in the north-central area of Yamagata Prefecture (though the section between Tokyo and Fukushima is handled by the Tohoku Shinkansen service). The Yamagata is often called mini-shinkansen because unlike most Shinkansen trains, it operates on conventional railway tracks.
The average travel time for the 421 km-long Tokyo to Shinjo route is 3 hours and 30 minutes. City stops along the way include Fukushima, Yonezawa, Kaminoyama and Yamagata.
There are two types of Yamagata Shinkansen trains in service along the Tokyo to Shinjo route: the E3-1000 Series and E3-2000 Series. Two different seating classes are offered on most trains: “Ordinary Car” (essentially Standard Class) and “Green Car” (comparable to First or Business Class).
Foot baths to debut on Yamagata bullet train
YAMAGATA – JR East unveiled on Monday a new “resort train” that will allow passengers on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line to soothe their feet.
The carriage, which was shown to the media in the city of Yamagata, will make its debut July 19, allowing tourists to enjoy the landscape along the train line while soaking their feet in an “ashiyu,” or warm-water foot bath

DYA717 June 25, 2016 Yamagata
Breakfast not included in this hotel plan so at 5:30 a.m. I went ½-block down the street to a Family Mart and got me a yakisoba bento and one cabbage salad. Good deal for around $4.25-US. Mmmmmmm, what to do now? Playing it by ear! They had a 9:34 local 2-car, non-shinkansen train going down the line so I caught it. Sorry the video shakey. This local train sways a lot. I got off after 12 minutes at Kaminoyama-Onsen. This is an onsen town. Didn’t see many people the whole time I was there but I guess everyone was in their ryokan/hotels taking an onsen/soaking bath. I tried to make a reservation for this period but all the places were booked so here I am, just BURA-BURA. The public is invited to soak in a lot of the ryokan/hotel onsens at around 800-1500 yen. Didn’t feel like soaking in a hot pool so I walked up to the castle. It is a totally rebuilt castle of steel and concrete and has an elevator. Boy those samurais got it easy. It was originally higher up on the hill so everything about this castle is not original, even the design is slightly different. It houses a museum. It has a nice 4th floor observatory, looking 360 around the mountains and the onsen town. Walked over to some remaining samurai homes (bukeyashikis) but didn’t enter any of them. Then saw a coupla temples. After about a 2 hour walk, I went into a large department store building cause usually get restaurants in these big department stores. Wow, what a surprise. It was only 25% occupied. A whole lot of space was empty and dark. Looks like they are closing down. Alas, no restaurant. Walked around some more and didn’t see a restaurant.
So I jumped on the shinkansen and decided to ride it to the end of the line which is the city of Shinjo. They had a nice train station. But this town too had very little people walking around. I walked around a bit and didn’t see any restaurants so went back to the train station. They had a restaurant. Whew! No English menu so when I asked for one, this young lady called over to another waiter and I got this talking menu. This young kid, spoke pretty good English and explained the menu to me. I selected the ginger shoyu pork lunch set. Wow, ONO! Picked up my ticket on the shinkansen back to Yamagata. Got back around 4 p.m. Wow, what a tiring day, mostly walking and not finding too many famous sights. Still was a good day for me.
