Taking a water sample from the Super-Kamioka Neutrino Detector
The Super-Kamioka Neutrino Detection Experiment, abbreviated to Super-K or SK (Japanese: スーパーカミオカンデ) is the World's largest underground neutrino detector. The detector is located 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) underground in the Mozumi Mine in the Hida's Kamioka area.
This neutrino observatory is located under Mount Ikeno near the city of Hida, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The observatory was designed to search for proton decay, study solar and atmospheric neutrinos, and keep watch for supernovae in the Milky Way Galaxy.
Super-kamioka consists of a cylindrical stainless steel tank about 40 metres (131 feet) in height and diameter holding 50,000 tons of ultrapure water. Mounted on an inside superstructure are about 13,000 photomultiplier tubes that detect light from Cherenkov radiation. As such, ultrapure water is required for the experiment to be effective and accurate.
