Birds eye view, of Tezpur city, from the Kanaklata Udyan, on the hilltop of Dhenukhona Pahar or Tiger hill, Tezpur, Sonitpur, India. The park is in memory of a teenage girl freedom fighter 'Kanaklata Baruah' who died from bullet shot, by British police, in Gohpur, while trying to unfurl Tricolor, our national flag, on 10th September 1942, during India's freedom struggle.

About This Video-Kanaklata was born in the Borangabari village of the undivided Darrang district of Assam as the daughter of Krishna Kanta and Karneshwari Barua. Her grandfather Ghana Kanta Barua was a famous hunter in Darrang. Her ancestors were from the Dolakharia Barua kingdom(Chutia vassal chiefdom) of the erstwhile Ahom state who relinquished the Dolakakharia title and continued retaining Barua title. Her mother died when she was only five and her father, who remarried, died when she reached thirteen. She went to school till class three but then dropped out to take care of her younger siblings.
During the Quit India Movement Kanaklata joined the Mrityu Bahini, a death squad comprising groups of youth from the Gohpur sub division of Assam. On 20 September 1942, the Bahini decided it would hoist the national flag at the local police station. A procession of unarmed villagers were led by Barua to do so. The police under Rebati Mahan Som the officer in-charge of the police station warned the procession of dire consequences if they proceeded with their plan. Undeterred by the police, the procession continued marching ahead when the police fired upon the procession. Kanaklata was shot and the flag she was carrying with her was taken up by Mukunda Kakoti who too was shot at. Both Kanaklata and Kakoti were killed in the police action. Kanaklata was only 17 years of age at the time of her martyrdom.

Kanaklata Udyan, Tezpur is a memorial hill-top park.On 10 September 1942, at Gohpur a young girl led a procession of unarmed villagers under Congress flag. She was Kanaklata Barua a girl from Barangabari village. As soon as Kanaklata unfurled the flag she and her companion Mukunda Kakati were gunned down by the armed Police. The saga of her heroic sacrifice is still remembered with pride.
On the same day at Dhekiajuli Police Station eleven unarmed villagers were gunned down by the armed Police while trying to hoist the tri-color at the Police Station - three of them were teen-aged girls- Tileswari, Numali and Khahuli .One of the best view of river brahmaputra and Tezpur

Ouguri Hills is popular sightseeing destination of Tezpur, situated on the banks of Brahmaputra River. The specialty of this hill is a statue of Kanaklata, placed on its top. Kanaklata was a martyr in the Quit India Movement. Its hill top also provides a complete view of the Brahmaputra River and Tezpur town. Its rugged terrains are also popular amongst rock climbers.
