Kanal , frequently referred to as Kanal ob Soči , is a settlement mostly on the left bank of the Soča River in the Slovene Littoral, the traditional region in southwestern Slovenia. It is an important crossing point over the Soča. At its eastern border, on the left bank of the Soča, runs the Bohinj Railway, the railway track linking the Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

Record breaking river Soča under 'Kanal ob Soči' bridge - 05/11/2012

Video is showing flooding of alpine river Soča (Primorska region, W Slovenia) in town Kanal ob Soči. New highest river flow was measured, the record now stands at 2401 m3/s. Flooding occured after intense rain in the Julian Alps area. Weather stations in the area have measured up to 400 liters/m2 of rain in total.

The Municipality of Kanal ob Soči

The Municipality of Kanal ob Soči is situated in Western Slovenia, in the Central Soča Valley at the border with Italy. It is divided from the neighbouring Slavia Friulana (Slovene: Beneška Slovenija) in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia by the river Idrija. Its location between the hills of the Kanalski Kolovrat in the West and the plateau Banjška planota in the East offers its visitors several possibilities for recreation, relaxation, journeys, cycling, hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming in the River Soča as well as visits of cultural, historical and natural sights. The heart of the Municipality is Kanal, a small medieval town with a rich cultural heritage.

Soča je v treh letih že drugič drla skozi luno - okroglo odprtino - v kanalskem mostu. Poplavila je hiše na obeh bregovih v Kanalu, številne odseke cest in med drugim tudi kotlovnico osnovne šole Deskle. Bila je za pol metra višja, kakor ob poplavah pred tremi leti, dosegla pa je pretok okrog 2500 m3/s.

Camp Korada - Kanal ob Soči - camping Slovenia

- Camp Korada is located along the main road Nova Gorica -- Bovec, about 20km away from Nova Gorica, on beautiful location along the well-known Kanal bridge. Camp is located on the western side of the village Kanal, so that shops, restaurants, pharmacy and sweet shop are only a short walk across the historical bridge away.

Reception of the camp is in bistro Pirih that is part of the camp. They will serve you with delicious grill food and authentic wine from Goriska Brda, which you can enjoy on renewed terrace above turquoise Soca.

Huge amounts of rainfall (locally above 500mm) in 3 days brought numerous rivers flooding across north and northwest Slovenia, including rivers Soča and Sava, as well as smaller ones. Have chased the event through Apr 27th and 28th.
