Kanazawa: a jewel in Japan's crown
In this week's episode of Target we go to Kanazawa, in the west of the archipelago. It is on UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for its traditional craft and folk arts and is fast becoming one of Japan's new must see destinations.
Our correspondent Serge Rombi said: Kanazawa's economic boom dates back to the time of the Samurais. Its exceptional architecture, which escaped bombardment during World War Two, its cuisine, and most of all its fabulous craftsmanship, are the origins of its success…

Kanazawa Tour Trip Kanazawa City, Japan
Kanazawa Castle ????, Ishikawa, Japan. 金沢城 Japan ????????
Kanazawa Castle ????, Ishikawa, Japan. ????????
Kanazawa Castle is just across the Ishikawa Bridge from Kanazawa's prime attraction, the Kenrokuen Garden. Both sites are must-sees on a visit to Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Kanazawa Castle was the seat of the power of the local Maeda clan. The Maeda family were the hereditary feudal lords (daimyo) of the Kaga province (what is now the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture) from 1583. Kanazawa Castle, itself has had a difficult history.
Kanazawa Castle was begun by Maeda Toshiie (1538-1599), the man promoted to the feudal lord of the area by Oda Nobunaga and completed by his son Yoshinaga.
Burnt down on a number of occasions, only the superb Ishikawa Gate and the Sanjikken Nagaya, samurai warehouse survive from the original construction of Kanazawa Castle.
As with Kumamoto Castle in western Kyushu, a 2001 reconstruction program carried out by Sumitomo Corp. has restored the huge Gojikken Nagaya storehouse and arsenal and the Hishi-yagura and Hashizumemon Tsuzuki-yagura watchtowers adjoining the storehouse to their original state.
Gojikken Nagaya means literally the long building of fifty ken, a ken being an ancient measurement equal to about 1.8m, making the building about 90m in length.
Traditional construction methods were employed in the renovation from the original, existing building plans of Kanazawa Castle. Traditional carpenters from Kyoto were brought in to teach the local craftsmen in the old techniques.

Urawa Kurashi no Hakubutsukan, Minka-en is an outdoor museum almost in the center of Minuma rice field in Urawa (Saitama Pref.). Seven traditional buildings from the middle or late Edo period (1603-1868) were removed and rebuilt here by restoring them to the original state. Many objects and tools, representing daily life in those days, are collected and on display as well as many agricultural tools. You can note how the walls were made and the internal and external structure of the roofs. The warehouse is the most modern building dating back to 1920.

Renowned for its omotenashi—a Japanese way of hospitality that doesn’t draw attention to itself—the city of Kanazawa is bustling with tourists both domestic and international all year round. Recognized by UNESCO as its first Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, the region was linked to Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2015, and continues its evolution with the Kanazawa 21st Century Kogei Festival, which kicked off this past October as a community-driven platform to present its arts and crafts to a worldwide audience.
Kanazawa flourished during the Edo Period as a jokamachi, or castle town, at the heart of the Kaga Domain (present day Ishikawa Prefecture), which was governed by the Maeda clan for almost 300 years over 14 generations. It was the Maeda clan that constructed the region’s most iconic landmarks: Kanazawa Castle, Kenroku-en—designated as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens—and Seisonkaku Villa. The clan’s promotion of culture and learning cultivated a rich tradition of handicrafts such as Kutani ware and lacquerware, and a hearty variety of gastronomic delights—but there’s much more to the region than its storied traditions.
There’s the Kanazawa Umimirai Library, featured as a “super library” in a BBC article on the world’s most impressive public libraries, and selected by Fodor’s as one of the “World’s 20 Most Stunning Libraries”.
There’s the D.T. Suzuki Museum, a place for contemplation and a chance to learn more about the ideas of the Buddhist philosopher Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, who played a key role in spreading Japanese and Eastern culture to the West. Comprised of three wings, gardens, and a flat pond, the museum was designed by world-renowned architect Yoshio Taniguchi.
Then there is the burgeoning generation of craft artists leading a new wave of styles, traditions, and approaches to modern living.
Kanazawa is a wellspring of creativity and heritage-in-the-making, a beacon of coming trends bringing together classic and traditional Japanese aesthetics with forward-looking sensibilities. Visit once, and you’ll be visiting for life. Join us on our Kanazawa journey.
