Kanazawa Station to Tokyo | Hokuriku Shinkansen
Were heading back to Tokyo from Kanazawa! Before we go, let's explore Kanazawa Station from the famous Tsutsurimon Gate to the gift shops and information desk to the weird Post Box Psycho baby and the Shinkansen train platform. We got on the Hokuriku Shhnkansen at 8:17pm but it was delayed by 7 minutes.
Where is Kanazawa Station?

Kanazawa, Japan - Kanazawa Station (2019)
Kanazawa Station (金沢駅 Kanazawa-eki) is a major railway station in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West), the private railway operator Hokuriku Railroad, and the third-sector operator IR Ishikawa Railway.
Beneath a square in front of the JR station is Hokutetsu-Kanazawa Station, the terminal of the Hokuriku Railroad Asanogawa Line.
JR Kanazawa Station is elevated above street level, featuring three island platforms with one cut-out platform (for Track 4) on the Up (Toyama) side of the middle island platform, serving seven tracks in total. A large roof covers the station building, in order to prevent train stoppages due to accumulated snow within the station.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen platforms are adjacent to the east exit, between the Motenashi Dome and the conventional tracks. The shinkansen station has two island platforms serving four tracks. At the time of its opening, it will be the terminus of the line, although, long-term plans call for the route to be extended first to Tsuruga, and eventually to Osaka.
Kanazawa (金沢市 Kanazawa-shi) is a city located in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 January 2018, the city had an estimated population of 466,029 in 203,271 households, and a population density of 990 persons per km². The total area of the city was 468.64 square kilometres (180.94 sq mi). It is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.
JR Kanazawa Station (JR金沢駅), Kanazawa City
JR Kanazawa Station (JR金沢駅) is located in the Kanazawa City on the middle-northern border of Japan near the Sea of Japan. Currently this train station only has a regular JR Line service but the new Hokuriku Shinkansen line will be installed to service these parts with a bullet train.

From Kanazawa (金沢) to Shirakawa-go [白川郷] 2017 WINTER
An 1 hour train to tokyo followed by a 3 hour bullet train to Kanazawa, enjoy a very short stay in a hotel before taking a close to 2 hours bus ride to Shirakawa-Go!!! Taking the bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-Go is faster but I will like to see Kanazawa even for a very short while.

JAPAN : Kanazawa - Shirakawa Go
Call me odd, call me wasted, call me however you want it, but I will state clearly this:
I LOVE KANAZAWA AMONG ANY OTHER CITY I'VE VISITED IN THIS JAPAN TRIP!!
Kanazawa is a small and unpopular destination compared to some other big cities. Kanazawa offers warmth, friendliness, and expirience that is new to me. I tought we will only transit in Kanazawa for the sake of going to Shirakawa Go. But surely I would love to spend more days here or revisit this beautiful part of Japan.
We took shinkansen from Kyoto to Kanazawa and walked from the train station to our inn. In Kanazawa it is more practical to use bike than busses or train (yaaaaassshhh!!!). Fortunately our inn provided free bike during our stay. Directly, after put our luggage in, we rode to 21st century of contemporary art museum. Yes, that shuper hype spot in town! Shall you not be mistaken, that apart from this museum, Kanazawa offers many pretty architectural landmarks that will directly made you Europeanized! Sadly that rain poured pretty often when we were here and our days in Kanazawa was short :)
FYI, Kanazawa is much much cheaper than Takayama if you need to transit before Shirakawa Go. But not any less pretty :)
The next day was dedicated to explore Shirakawa Go, the UNESCO heritage area. Shirakawa Go is a small area to explore, but you need to dedicate 1 whole day (by this, I mean get the earliest bus from Kanazawa and back from Shirakawa at about 4pm-ish to reach Kanazawa at dinner time). Shirakawa Go may offered udon with abundant leek. There are not much place to dine and bringing your own food may be a good idea. Remember to keep the vicinity clean by keep your trash in hands until you find trashbin. The central part of Shirakawa Go is dedicated for traditional houses exploration (with per person entry fee) and few of food and snack stalls.

*How do I get to Kanazawa from Tokyo?*
Traveling from Tokyo to Kanazawa only takes 2.5 hours. In March 2015, the Nagano Shinkansen line opened a new train that runs to Kanazawa station. It’s called Hokuriku Shinkansen. I went from Nagano to Kanazawa which only took a little over one hour.
*21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art*
The free part of the museum is an exhibit on cloth. You can feel the different materials used to make a piece of cloth. I believe the exhibit that is offered for free changes all the time. The outside of the museum has pretty interesting pieces you can look at.
*Kanazawa has cherry blossoms!*
If you missed the cherry blossoms you can still catch the Yaezakura cherry blossoms! It is a multi-layered cherry blossom. Because of the different layers the colors range from light to dark pink.
*Things to Do in Kanazawa*
1) When in Kanazawa, you have to try gold leaf ice cream. Kanazawa produces 99% of all gold leaf in Japan.
2) Kanazawa also has a rich tradition of making amazing craft items. This stems from the 15th century where samurai used to rule the land. They didn’t have any wars to fight and were rich in food and land, so they decided to invest many of their resources into arts and crafts.
Today, Kanazawa has over 400 legendary craftsmen dedicated to 36 different types of arts and crafts. Gold leaf, fireworks, umbrellas and fishing lures are some of the specialties of the area.
3) Chaya Area is a lovely neighborhood of beautifully preserved geisha houses. Many have now been converted into restaurants or teahouses. This place reminded me of Gion in Kyoto. Like here it is also a famous geisha district.
4) Kanazawa Castle
From 1583 to the end of the Edo Period, Kanazawa Castle was the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, a feudal land second only to the Tokugawa’s lands in terms of size and wealth.
The original castle was burnt down and I didn’t bother to pay to go inside. There isn’t much inside compared to Matsumoto castle. If you haven’t seen my trip to Matsumoto remember to go check that out.
Kanazawa Castle Hours
7:00 to 18:00 (March 1 to October 15)
8:00 to 17:00 (October 16 through February)
5) Kanazawa Tea Ceremony
If you want a real tea ceremony experience, they have one here.
This exquisite private garden and tea house was reconstructed based on the original floor plans and opened in 2015. It’s one of the prettiest places in Japan in my opinion, and drinking matcha tea in the tea house while looking out at the view is a special experience.
On Friday and Saturday nights, they open the garden and light it up. I didn’t get to do that this trip but I read that it is a beautiful sight.
6) Omnicho Market
I couldn’t just leave without experiencing this market. So before I left Kanazawa, I had to stop by this market to take a look.
This place reminds me of Nishiki market in Kyoto, just not as big and crowded. It’s also maze like with a bunch of small coordinators snaking around everywhere.
I loved the big, raw oysters here. You can add your sauces on it and it only costs 500 yen. I also got the calm which was disappointing and fishy.
7) Eat Kanazawa Curry
I came here because it was conveniently located inside Kanazawa train station and Go Go curry is a famous brand. I’ve never tried Kanazawa styled curry before. Kanazawa curry has some specific attributes: it needs to be thick and gooey and is often sweet. It’s served with shredded cabbage and curry entirely covers the rice. It’s traditionally eaten in a stainless steel bowl and a fork and a spoon (or even a spork).

Kanazawa Station 金沢駅, Japan 2016 [Sony AX53]
Wow can only begin to describe my first impression of Kanazawa 金沢市. After leaving the train we were welcomed by such amazing Japanese architecture all around. The Tsuzumi gate at the entrance was just gorgeous and breath taking. We did not make it 5 feet out the door before we had to stop to take it all in.... and this was just the train station! If Kanazawa station was this amazing, I could not wait to discover what else the city had to offer.

Kanazawa And Shirakawago Japan
Kanazawa - Omicho Market, Shirakawago
Video taken last 01 February 2019
Location 1 of this video:
Fumuroya Cafe Kanazawa Railway Station
Japan, 〒920-0858 Ishikawa, Kanazawa, Kinoshinbomachi, 7−1−1 JR金沢駅構内 金沢百番街・あんと
When we arrived at Kanazawa Station from Kyoto ,it started raining and we dive to this cafe right away. They serve a hearty and delicious soup with FU which a wheat gluten. Fu is famous in Japan and usually cook in a soup. It serves as a meat substitute and very healthy combined with kelp and miso broth. They also have yummy dessert with fruits, bean jam and Fu dumplings. All the foods are very cute, presentable and appetizing.
Location 2 of this video:
Omicho Market
50 Kamiomicho, Kanazawa, Ishikawa 920-0905, Japan
Omicho is considered the “Kanazawa’s Kitchen”. It is the largest fresh food and seafood market in Kanazawa. We highly suggest that you eat in the store where we had our oyster, scallop and tuna sashimi. It’s located near entrance in a corner slot with a big picture of fish in their wall.
Try also the Oden Ippukuya, it’s a hot pot dish wherein you can put any dish or dumpling that you like in your bowl with soup. A Kanazawa specialty that you shouldn’t miss.
Location 3 of this video:
Shirakawago Ogimachi Park
Shirakawa, Ono District, Gifu 501-5600, Japan
This Unesco World Heritage is located in the Northwest of Gifu Prefecture. We travel there from Kanazawa Railway Station riding a bus. This a big neighboring village with traditional style of house, gassho style farmhouse. Steep roofs believed to be the shape of a hand praying “Gassho-zukuri” and made to withstand the snow in winter weather. You can come here in any season of the year but we really enjoyed it during our visit in the winter. I keep saying that it is a Snow Wonderland. Very serene and majestic place. They also have accommodations here if you want to stay longer than a day tour.
Check out the link for bus schedule and rates.
