Kanazawa, Japan - Higashi Chaya-gai Geisha District (2019)
Higashi Chaya-gai is a beautifully preserved historical area of Kanazawa with many traditional wooden buildings. This area was established in 1820 as an entertainment district for rich merchants and nobility.
The name Higashi Chaya-gai literally means “Eastern Teahouse District,” because the chaya, or teahouses, were where wealthy customers would be entertained by geisha with traditional music, dancing, and drinking games. Many of these buildings have today been converted into restaurants or souvenir craft shops, but there are two geisha teahouses that are open to the public during the day. In this article we will introduce Higashi Chaya-gai’s chief highlights.

Kanazawa accounts for more than 98% of all gold leaf production in Japan. Hakuichi (箔一) which is one of the famous gold foil companies in Kanazawa sells very unique menu “Gold Leaf Ice Cream.” It looks extremely gorgeous as the whole gold leaf sheet is used in 1 normal size ice cream. It is overwhelming to see the gold leaf is put on the ice cream just in front of your eyes!
We had a delightful dinners... yes I said 2 dinners in one night because we were on food expedition.

Do-It-Yourself Gold Leafing in Kanazawa | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
At Hakukōkan, a tourist facility in Kanazawa, visitors can learn about the history of gold leaf production, watch it being made, and browse among various gold-leafed souvenirs. An eye-opening exhibit explains how a piece of gold just one-third the size of a ¥10 coin can be reduced to a thinness of 0.0001 mm so as to cover an area of over 1.6 square meters, the size of a tatami mat. One breathtaking room has walls entirely covered with gold leaf and a display of a full-sized set of traditional armor also covered in gold. Visitors can experience decorating souvenir items with gold leaf themselves. And in the spacious café they can treat themselves to ice cream cones topped with ultra-thin sheets of gold.

Gold Leaf Everywhere! Ishikawa's Little Kyoto - Kanazawa
I had the pleasure of going to Kanazawa in the fall. Absolutely amazing. There are so many things to do there and with the new Tokuriku Bullet train it's even easier to get there. Kanazawa is often thought of as a Little Kyoto due to the many traditional sightseeing places and the many similar spots spread out throughout the old town. See how samurai used to live while exploring the traditional samurai houses like Nomura-ke in Nagamachi District. Eat some yummy gold snacks at the kinpaku or gold leaf speciality shop Hakuichi. Stroll through one of the best landscapes garden, Kenrokuen, and enjoy the fall foilage. Chow down on some kaisen-don or seafood rice bowl at Omicho's fresh food market. Much like Gion district in Kyoto, Kanazawa's Higashichaya district is loaded with very traditional teahouses and restaurants. The architecture here was absolutely fantastic because unlike Kyoto there are not nearly as many tourists so you can really enjoy sightseeing without having to get around a large amount of tourists. Also if you are interested in Japanese crafts, there is no place better to come than Kanazawa. There are many different types of workshops to participate in.
A brief history of Kanazawa
Kanazawa was an area controlled by the Maeda clan which was the second most powerful clan next to Tokugawa in the early Edo period. It also was one of the few areas to escape the firebombings by the US during WW2, therefore, it is thought to rival Kyoto and Tokyo in terms of cultural acheivements. It is also Japan's leading producer of gold leaf, which is used in many temples and shrines all across Japan, including Kinkakuji.
Access
Getting to Kanazawa is actually muh easier than it used to be thanks to the relatively new Hokuriku Bullettrain! It only takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from Tokyo station and about 14,000 yen or is included in the JR Rail Pass!

Gold Leaf Capital of Japan: Kanazawa Keeps a Long Tradition Alive | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Kanazawa, capital of Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan, is also capital of Japan’s gold leaf craft, accounting for 99% of the country’s total production. The history of this local handicraft is said to date back to the sixteenth century, and traditional production techniques are still in use.
In addition to being applied for decorative effect on works of art, such as folding screens (byōbu) and maki-e lacquerware, and on butsudan, the Buddhist family altars found in many Japanese homes, gold leaf is included as an ingredient in cosmetics and food products. Perhaps the most extravagant use of the precious material is as a topping for cones of soft ice cream.

My Adventures in Japan, May, 2014 : In a Gold-Leaf (Kinpaku) Factory, Kanazawa
Kanazawa gold leaf is made of alloys consisting of pure gold, and a very little amount of silver and copper. The gold leaf is pounded evenly to a thickness of 0.0001 mm. Even though gold leaf is so thin that we can see through it, the brightness of the gold is not lost. The brightness and expandability of gold leaf depends on the quality of hakuuchi-gami, which is the Japanese craft paper placed between gold leaves when they are pounded. Kanazawa gold leaf has been used in various places for its beautiful sparkle; Kinkakuji Temple, Nikko Toshogu, lacquerwares, Buddhist altars, textiles, and Kutani ceramics. More than 98% of Japanese gold leaf, and 100% of Japanese silver leaf and Western leaf is produced in Kanazawa. The city produces 99 percent of the nation's gold leaf and all of its silver and brass leaf as well as uwazumi, which is a bit thicker than metal leaf.
