It is just 3 minute walking distance from Kanchnaburi railway station.
Entry is free.
Opening time is 8 am to 5 pm.
It is the main prisoner of war (POW) cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway.
It is on the main road, Saeng Chuto Road, through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand, adjacent to an older Chinese cemetery.
The cemetery was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
There are 6,982 POWs buried there, mostly Australian, British, and Dutch.
The Kanchanaburi Memorial gives the names of 11 from India.

The bridge was build in 1943 by Allied Prisoners of War as part of the Death Railway from Bangkok to Rangoon, Burma.

After the surrender of Singapore in World War II, a unit of British soldiers was marched to a Japanese prison camp in western Thailand. They are paraded before the camp commandant, Colonel Saito, who informs them of his rules; all prisoners, regardless of rank, are to work on the construction of a bridge over the River Kwai to carry a new railway line to invade Burma.
The round shaped truss spans are the originals; the two trapezoidal replacements were supplied as war reparations from Japan.
The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 British-American World War II film directed by David Lean based on the 1952 French novel The Bridge over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle.The film was filmed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
The film achieved near universal critical acclaim, winning seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards, and in 1997, this film was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.

Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (known locally as the Don-Rak War Cemetery) is the main prisoner of war (POW) cemetery for victims of Japanese imprisonment while building the Burma Railway. Nearby, across a side road, is the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre about the railway and the prisoners who built it. There is also a Dutch Roman Catholic church nearby – Beata Mundi Regina.
The Last Post - Kanchanaburi War Cemetary, Thailand.
In military tradition The Last Post is played to signal the end of the day's activities. The Last Post also plays at military funerals to indicate the soldier has gone to his final resting place.
For me, it is one of the most emotional sounds i have ever heard. Both my grandfathers fought in WW2 and my thoughts go to them whenever i hear the bugle playing The Last Post. Making this video brought me to tears on more than 1 occassion.
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetary located in Kanchanaburi province, Thailand and is 124 kilometers north-west of Bangkok. It is the burial site of 6,982 POWs from World War 2. The Kanchanaburi War Cemetary is owned and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The surrounding gardens are immaculate.
The POWs working on the Thai-Burma railway were forced to work in extreme conditions comprising of the extreme weather, lack of food and water, sleep deprivation and other inhuman living conditions. In death, the POWs were shown a perverse respect by their Japaneese captors who allowed for a respecable funeral and even giving money to buy rations.

Kanchanaburi - is the largest of the central provinces ( changwat ) of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are ( from north clockwise ) Tak, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom and Ratchaburi. In the west it borders Kayin State, Mon State and Tanintharyi Division of Myanmar.
A province in the Central Plains, Kanchanaburi is frequented by tourists who have been attracted by its long history and ancient civilizations, a location of the Bridge over the River Khwae – ‘Kwai’ as it is known internationally and scene of the historic World War II film. Producers of the movie the Bridge Over the River Kwae are guilty of giving the river and bridge both the wrong spelling and mis-pronunciation. It is pronounced ‘Kwae’ as in the English word ‘Hair’. The province is also famous for its natural attractions such as forests, mountains, caves and waterfalls.
The province is located in the west of Thailand, and is situated 129 km from Bangkok and covers a total area of about 19,483 km² being the country’s third largest province after Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai. Topographically, it is covered with timber and evergreen forests. The district covers the source valleys of the rivers Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi ( River Kwai ) which merge at the city Kanchanaburi and form the Mae Klong River there. Several National Parks are located in the forests of the mountain area of the province - the Erawan, Sai Yok, Khao Laem, Khaoen Sri Nakarin and Chaloem Rattanakosin National Parks are located in the province. The Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in this province is also listed in the UNESCO world heritage list.
Archaeology found in Kanchanaburi dates back to the 4th century which proves of trade with surrounding countries even in that time. Very little is also historically known about the actual Khmer influence in Kanchanaburi but there is evidence of their occupation with Prasat Muang Singh – one of the country’s most well known Khmer sites.

I went to Kanchanaburi for the weekend to see the Bridge on the River Kwai and look around the War Museums and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery it was a very emotional stay, I checked it out and found there are 2 cemetery's in Kanchanaburi there is another called ChungKai War Cemetery so i visited there also as it wasn't too far and across the other side of the river, i was shocked when i realised i was the only person there it was empty ! Has ChungKai Cemetery been forgotten, There are another 1,400 British and Dutch soldiers that lost their lives being forced to build the Death Railway as its called buried here, It is kept immaculate but no visitors ? This was heart breaking to think that our hero's have been forgotten or is it the lack of advertising that people don't even know it exist's, Lets get it out there so that people know it is there and our War Hero's have not been forgotten at ChungKai Cemetery.

What to do in KANCHANABURI - a Travel Diary!
Kanchanaburi is Thailand's 3rd largest province, home to some of the most important history in the entire country (possibly even the world) and yet it's hardly spoken about.
The Bridge On The River Kwai is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi, but holds truer to being the most central point of history. More accurately the Khwae-Yai river, the bridge was constructed during the infamous Japanese Death Railway (Burma Railway) that tore across the country during World War II.
As a focal point for a world-famous film, there are some common inaccuracies that have set root into our believed history - suffice it to say, the conditions were a lot worse than we initially believed.
Walking over the bridge is an unparalleled experience; something that we had wanted to do for many years and it was as moving and surreal as we'd imagined.
Not only this, but we also made our way to Hellfire Pass or Konyu Cutting, one of the most notorious (if not the most notorious) sections of the Death Railway construction. Working 18 hours a day with barley any food or water until death set it's grip upon thousands of Prisoner's of War brought infamy to this stretch of the railway.
Hellfire pass garnered it's name from the sight of worn prisoners working away by torchlight, reminiscent of a scene from hell.
Kanchanaburi was definitely not an adventure that filled us with excitement, joy and wonder - but rather set us back to humility, immense gratitude and a sense of reality. We loved it.
