The Koshi or Kosi River (Nepali: कोशी नदी, koshī nadī कोसी नदी, kosī nadī) drains the northern slopes of the Himalayas in the Tibet Autonomous Region and the southern slopes in Nepal. From a major confluence of tributaries north of the Chatra Gorge onwards, the Koshi River is also known as Saptakoshi (Nepali: सप्तकोशी, saptakoshī) for its seven upper tributaries. These include the Tamur Koshi originating from the Kanchenjunga area in the east, Arun River and Sun Koshi from Tibet. The Sun Koshi's tributaries from east to west are Dudh Koshi, Bhote Koshi, Tamba Koshi and Indravati Koshi. The Saptakoshi crosses into northern Bihar where it branches into distributaries before joining the Ganges near Kursela in Katihar district.
The Koshi is 720 km (450 mi) long and drains an area of about 74,500 km2 (28,800 sq mi) in Tibet, Nepal and Bihar.[2][4] In the past, several authors proposed that the river has shifted its course for more than 133 km (83 mi) from east to west during the last 200 years. But a review of 28 historical maps dating 1760 to 1960 revealed a slight eastward shift for a long duration, and that the shifting was random and oscillating in nature.
The river basin is surrounded by ridges which separate it from the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the north, the Gandaki in the west and the Mahananda in the east. The river is joined by major tributaries in the Mahabharat Range approximately 48 km (30 mi) north of the Indo-Nepal border. Below the Siwaliks, the river has built up a megafan some 15,000 km2 (5,800 sq mi) in extent,

Koshi Barrage, also called Bhimnagar Barrage, was built between 1959 and 1963 and straddles the Indo-Nepal border. It is an irrigation, flood control and hydropower generation project on the Kosi River built under a bilateral agreement between Nepal and India: the entire cost of the project was borne by India. The catchment area of the river is 61,788 km2 (23,856 sq mi) in Nepal at the barrage site. The highest peaks lie in its catchment. About 10% is snow-fed. The Eastern Canal and the Western Canal taking off from the barrage, were designed for a discharge capacity of 455 cubic metres per second (16,100 cu ft/s) to irrigate 6,125 square kilometres (1,514,000 acres) and 210 cubic metres per second (7,400 cu ft/s) to irrigate 3,566.1 square kilometres (881,200 acres), respectively. A hydropower plant has been built on the Eastern Canal, at a canal drop (3.6 km (2.2 mi) from the Koshi Barrage), to generate 20 MW. The Western Kosi Canal provides irrigation to 250 square kilometres (62,000 acres) in Nepal. A valuable bridge over the barrage opened up the East-West highway in the eastern sector of Nepal.
An inundation canal taking off at Chatra, where the Koshi debouches into the plains, has been built to irrigate a gross area of 860 km2 in Nepal. The project was renovated with IDA assistance after Nepal took over the project in 1976.

Ilam Nepal || Trip to Ilam
Geographically, Nepal is nestled in between two giant countries India and China. It is a land locked country with five development regions. It takes over ten hours to reach to Fikkal/Ilam from Kathmandu. The 500km journey to Fikkal begins from Kathmandu, the Capital of Nepal. BP highway (Banepa- Bardibas) is a new route which passes through Dhulikhel to reach Ilam. This road connects Kathmandu Valley with Eastern Nepal. The beautiful river and the mountains make the journey more adventurous. This road passes through the Sindhuligadi. Sindhuligadi is a historical place where the British troop led by the Captain Kinloch was defeated by the Gurkha soldier back in 18th century. Nepal remained undefeated from the British Raj.
Koshi river which originates from the high Himalaya is another place to stop. Saptakoshi consists off seven rivers- Sunkoshi, Tamakoshi, Bhotekoshi, Dudhkoshi, Tamor, Arun and Indrabati.
Koshi Tappu Wildlife center is also located on the side of Koshi river. It is a home of over 485 species of bird. The center also preserves the wild water buffalo and other wide range of animals like gharial, deer and wild pigs.
Fikkal, a small town of Ilam is located in the Mechi Zone of eastern Nepal. Geographically it lies in the hill region which is mostly known as Mahabharata range. It is famous for natural scenery and landscapes, tea plantation, and diverse agricultural economy. The weather here is freezing in the winter, mild warm in summer and foggy in the monsoon season. Many tourists come to Ilam for sight seeing of the natural beauty.

Traffic Lanes in Rural Nepal
There were a number of rope/steel rope bridges to cross and these were narrow. Everyone and every animal used the same route, so depending who got to the bridge first, traffic jams were common.

Phakding to Namche Bazaar Everest Trek Nepal
Phakding to Namche Bazaar Everest Trek
After leaving Phakding, the trail passes by the Sherpa Shangrila Resort, a waterfall before Tok Tok, thru Benkar and crosses the Dudh Kosi to Monjo and the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park.
After passing thru a beautifully painted kani gate, the trail descends with a waterfall in the distance before crossing the Dudh Kosi River to Jorsale. Khumbila can be seen from beyond Jorsale just before crossing the Dudh Kosi one more time. The trail then climbs up and down and up to the most exciting bridge crossing - the Larja Bridge high above the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi rivers.
After crossing the bridge the trail ascends steeply. I looked back down the valley to the southeast to see Kusum Kanguru high above the ridges and Tawache to the northeast. The trail then becomes more gentle as it ascends thru forest with views of the long sometimes jagged ridge of Kongde.
After 70 minutes, I arrived at the first house of Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar (3440m) is the unofficial capital of the Khumbu region of Nepal.
Tengi Ragi Tau came into view to the west and Kongde came perfectly into view as I walked thru Namche.
|| JOURNEY TO THE EASTERN NEPAL ||
Here's a short video of our short memorable journey to some places of Eastern Nepal and Silguri (West Bengal). Almost every shots were handheld and stabilized manually in post-production.
The Eastern Terai is also more populous, more industrial and more Indian. Although the foothills are usually within sight, the main east–west highway sticks to the plains, where the way of life is essentially identical to that of Bihar and West Bengal just across the border. Most travellers only flit through on their way to the border crossings of akarbhitta (for Darjeeling); outside these places, there’s little tourist hype. While the few visitors that reach the eastern hills tend to be trekkers bound for the Everest or Kanchenjunga massifs, or rafters running the Sun Koshi, the area also offers great day-hiking. It’s served by just two all-weather roads: one climbs to the lovely Newari town of Dhankuta and rowdier Hile, the other crawls up to Ilam, Nepal’s tea-growing capital.Buses make good time through the Eastern Terai on the Mahendra Highway, and the almost-completed Dhulikhel–Sindhuli Highways will make getting to the east even easier. However, most places described in this chapter are located on side roads, and require various degrees of extra toil to reach. Tourist facilities are minimal, but the haat bazaars (weekly markets) are well worth looking out for.

Biratnagar (Devanāgarī: विराटनगर) is a metropolitan city[2] of Nepal. According to the 2011 census, the city ranks fourth in population. It ranks second in population density after Kathmandu. Biratnagar is the industrial capital of Nepal and has a total area of 40.108 mi² (103.88 km²). Its geographical location is 26°28'60N 87°16'60E.[3] The city is located in Morang District in the Kosi Zone of the eastern Terai region of Nepal. It lies 399 km east of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, and 6 km north of the border of the Indian state of Bihar. It lies in the Province No. 1, as per the new Constitution of Nepal 2015. It was declared as a Metropolitan city on 22nd of May, 2017 along with Birgunj.[4] The city is upgraded to metropolis by adding Tankisinuwari and Jahada-3 making the total population to reach 240,000 from current population of 214,000. [5]
In southern Nepal, about 23 people were killed by emergency weather. Heavy rainfall in the mountainous region has led to floods and landslides.
Thousands of homes have been destroyed by natural violence and villages are sealed from the outside world. The airport of the city of Biratnagar has been closed because it is blank.
The Nepalese government mobilized the police and the army for rescue work. Helicopters are deployed to evacuate people from the affected area.
Nepal has settled with natural disasters. By 2015, around 9000 people were killed in a severe earthquake.
Biratnagar is a hub for explorers of places in eastern Nepal like Ilam, Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha and Panchthar. A number of colorful haat bazaars (weekly markets) are held each week in different parts of the town, where farmers from the rural hinterland set up stalls to trade agricultural produce, spices and handicrafts.
There are several gardens, temples and places of religious importance in Biratnagar. Gopal garden, located near Hathkhola and Hridreyandra Bal Udhhyan near Thulo Mill are two main gardens. Temples have been the jewel of Biratnagar. They are decorated in vibrant ways to make them attractive.
The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve famous for its wildlife, especially for bird-watching enthusiasts, is a 90-minute drive from the city. It is home to the endangered wild buffaloes called Arna in Nepali.
The largest rhododendron forests of Tinjure, Milke and Jaljale can be reached in about 3–4 hours. Scenic treks with views of Mt. Makalu and Kanchenjunga can be started from the small towns of Basantapur or Tumlingtar.
The beautiful tea gardens of Ilam are just 4 hours' drive away. Another place of interest is the hilly district of Dhankuta with its orange orchards.
Dharan is (40 km to the north of Biratnagar); Itahari is 20 km north of Biratnagar . These places are famous for Taltalaiya, Ocean Park, Gokulam Resort, Dantakali Temple, Pindeshwor Temple, Budha Subba Temple and Panch Kanya, and are surrounded by hills; Bhedetar is a famous viewpoint.
