Kandariya Mahadev Temple...Khajuraho series (9)
Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the largest, loftiest and the finest among the existing Khajuraho temples.Probably built around 1025-50 by King Vidyahara. From sculpture and architecture point of view, Kandariya is considered to be the best temple among the Khajuraho group of temples.Originally this temple was a panchayatan type temple, but four subsidiary shrines at the four corners of the terrace do not exist now. Kandariya Mahadev shares its high platform with the small Mahadev shrine and the medium - sized Devi jagdambi Temple and has only one entrance to east with high flights of steps. At the entrance the artistic arch (makaratorana) is decorated with figures of deities,Mithunas, musicians, kirtimukhas, makaras etc.The ceiling of the Ardhamandapa and Mandapa are carved richly. The lintels of the sanctum and the doorjambs have rich floral carvings. Inside the sanctum, a square chamber, stands a marble Shivlinga (symbol of Shiva). The inner pradakshina path around the Sanctum is covered with marvellous sculptures. The sculptures are carved around the temple in three bands and include gods, goddesses, beautiful women, musicians and, of course, some of the famed erotic groups. The English archaeologist Cunningham counted 226 statues inside the temple and a further 646 outside - 872 in total with most of them nearly 1m high. The temple is decorated with rich sculpted figures of women in a variety of poses. There are women playing with a ball, some engaged in writing a letter, others applying make-up and absorbed in a multitude of other activities. On the southern and northern sides, between the balconies are the large-scale erotic panels. Below the bands of the main body of the temple are smaller, narrower friezes depicting court life, the army, and processions of elephants and horses. After the Kandariya Mahaddev temple, the artist of khajuraho never again attempted to build a strcuture so high or ornate.

History[edit]
Khajuraho was once the capital of the Chandela dynasty. The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, one of the best examples of temples preserved from the medieval period in India,[1][7] is the largest of the western group of temples in the Khajuraho complex which was built by the Chandela rulers. Shiva is the chief deity in the temple deified in the sanctum sanctorum.[8]
The Kandariya Mahadeva temple was built during the reign of Vidyadhara (r. c. 1003-1035 CE).[9] At various periods of the reign of this dynasty many famous temples dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva, Surya, Shakti of the Hindu religion and also for the Thirthankaras of Jain religion were built. Vidhyadhara, also known as Bida in the recordings of the Muslim historian Ibn-al-Athir was a powerful ruler who fought Mahmud of Ghazni in the first offensive launched by the latter in 1019.[1] This battle was not conclusive and Mahmud had to return to Ghazni. Mahmud again waged war against Vidhyadhara in 1022. He attacked the fort of Kalinjar.[1] The siege of the fort was unsuccessful. It was lifted and Mahmud and Vidhyadhara called a truce and parted by exchanging gifts. Vidhyadhara celebrated his success over Mahmud and other rulers by building the Kaṇḍāriyā Mahādeva Temple, dedicated to his family deity Shiva. Epigraphic inscriptions on a pilaster of the mandapa in the temple mentions the name of the builder of the temple as Virimda, which is interpreted as the pseudonym of Vidhyadhara.[1] Its construction is dated to the period from 1025 and 1050 AD.[4]
All the extant temples including the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple were inscribed in 1986 under the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites under Criterion III for its artistic creation and under Criterion V for the culture of the Chandelas that was popular till the country was invaded by Muslims in 1202.

Location
The Khajuraho monuments are located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, in Chatarpur district, about 620 kilometres (385 mi) southeast of New Delhi. The temples are located near a small town also known as Khajuraho,[8] with a population of about 20,000 people (2001 Census).
Khajuraho is served by Civil Aerodrome Khajuraho (IATA Code: HJR), with services to Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Mumbai.[9] The site is also linked by the Indian Railways service, with the railway station located approximately six kilometres from the entrance to the monuments.
The monuments are about ten kilometres off the east-west National Highway 75, and about 50 kilometres from the city of Chhatarpur, which is connected to the state capital Bhopal by the SW-NE running National Highway 86.
The 10th-century Bhand Deva Temple in Rajasthan was built in the style of the Khajuraho monuments and is often referred to as 'Little Khajuraho'.
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple
The Kaṇḍāriyā Mahādeva Temple (Devanagari: कंडारिया महादेव मंदिर, IAST: Kaṇḍāriyā Mahādeva Mandir) is the largest and most ornate Hindu temple in the medieval temple group found at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is considered one of the best examples of temples preserved from the medieval period in India. Khajuraho was once the religious capital of the Chandela Rajputs and today is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple is the largest of the Western group of temples and was built by king Dhangadeva, arguably one of the greatest Chandela kings. The temple was built around 1050 on Hindu beliefs dating back to 1000 BC; The main spire or sikhara rises 31 m to depict Mount Kailash, the Himalayan mountain abode of Shiva and is surrounded by 84 miniature spires (or Urushringas). Inside the sanctum is a marble linga representing Shiva. The Archaeological Survey of India protects the temple, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site at Khajuraho.

Ride to North East India | CH02 - Erotica | Khajuraho Temples - Kandariya Mahadev - Varanasi Ghats
Khajuraho Temples
Even before the first ray of light, ahead of everybody else, I set out to explore the Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho.
Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the largest and the loftiest monument of Khajuraho dedicated to Lord Shiva. This magnificent temple was built around a thousand years ago, by a strong Chandela emperor, King Vidyadhara.
I was speechless after watching this spectacular outcome of human imagination deriving spiritual peace through eroticism These temples withstood numerous foreign invasions, worst climatic conditions from thousands of years
Jagadambi Temple is one of the finely decorated temples with numerous erotic carvings. It is smaller than the Kandariya Mahadev Temple, but the symmetry and intricate carvings fill the gap.
This elegant 11th Century Chitragupta temple is dedicated to Sun god - Surya. The temple walls are carved with some of the finest figures of Sura-Sundari's erotic couples and gods including an eleven-headed Vishnu.
This majestic Vishvatha temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was actually a Panchayatana shrine. However, only two shrines, one in north-east and one in the south-west, were survived the wrath of the time.
Yashovarman built this marvellous Lakshmana Temple in the 10th century, dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu. The temple architecture is awe-inspiring with its exterior wall exhibiting over 600 gods.
Although there are many stories and beliefs behind these erotic sculptures, it surely evokes mixed emotions, whoever beholds these incredible carvings.
Soon after, I left the hotel Casa Di William and resumed my ride through the narrow lanes of Khajuraho. The beautiful road passes through the Panna National Park has very less or no traffic at all.
After many twists and turns in the dry forests of Madhya Pradesh, I was riding on the straight highways of Uttar Pradesh. From Khajuraho, it took nearly 9 hours to cover around 400-kilometre distance to Varanasi.
