Kandhar Fort - Nanded, MAHARASTRA
Kandhar fort is situated in the heart of Kandhar Town. Encircling the fort, is a ditch filled with water. Its construction is attributed to the Rashtrakuta King Krishna III of Malkhed who styled himself as Kandharpuradhi Swar. Outside the Kandhar fort at some distance is a hillock on which is situated an old Idgah held in reverence by the Muslims. It is of Nizamsahi period with two domes in characteristic Ahmednagar style. The architecture of the fort has some amazingly elaborates security designs. There is a ditch in the periphery and Mogul style construction in the Kandhar fort is remarkable.

Kandhar was famous as a major Jain centre in the Rashtrakuta kingdom, having Malkhed or Manyakheta as his capital. A huge statue of Kshetrapala (deity related to jains) is found near the bhuikot; the statue is broken but from the toenail that survives, its height is estimated to be more than 50 feet. Presently, there is an old Digambar Jain Temple in Kandhar which is awaiting for its renovation.

In 1649, Shah Jahan aimed to recapture Kandhar and sent Aurangzeb with 60,000 cavalry and 10,000 infantry. The resultant Siege of Kandhar lasted for three months and 20 days
Demographics
As of 2011 India census,[2] Kandhar had a population of 24,843. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Kandhar has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 75%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 56%. In Kandhar, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is also famous for the fort named Bhuikot, which is situated in Bahadarpura 3 km away from Kandhar. Kandhar is a historical city. Kandhar is also famous for custard apples.

Kandhar Fort is a fort in Kandhar town in Nanded district of Maharashtra state of India.[1] Encircling the fort, is a moat filled with water. Its construction is attributed to the Rashtrakuta King Krishna III of Malkhed who styled himself as Kandharpuradhi Swar
55 kilometers from Nanded stands the Kandhan Fort. Once an epitome of the region, the fort is currently in ruins, and its grandeur is nowhere to be found. But its location on the bank of the river Manya amidst all the green dressed mountains makes it worth all the attention. In fact, it's because of the attributes like location, area (24 acres), and wide ditch around made it extremely difficult for the rulers to conquer it. Apart from its strong structure, the fort is known for its spots like Jinsi Gate and the Machali Gate.
Do make a point to run fingers over the walls of the fort as they carry the carvings done by many dynasties, except Rashtrakuta sculptures. Also, worth noticing is a clock tower, which gives a fair idea that the place was once surrounded by the common market area outside the fort as well as the presence of ten temples around it. Lal Mahal and Darbar Mahal are worth a visit. A beautiful water tank with fountains and the surrounding garden remnants suggest the royalty experienced by the medieval Sultans.
