Kane'ohe 1959
Kane 'ohe 1959 is a song that depicts a very special time in my childhood. Growing up on a dairy farm in the late '50s on the windward side of the Oahu was a filled with wonderful memories. This song is dedicated to my father who cherished that dairy life and allowed me to share in such a wonderful time and place. Thank you, Dad.

What is a Coral Reef Biologist? - Kāne‘ohe Bay, Oʻahu, Hawai'i
This short film will optimistically answer questions for those who want a broader understanding of what a marine or coral biologist does. This film will focus on the extensive knowledge of a diversified group of coral biologists at Gates Coral lab - filmed on location at the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology, Kāne‘ohe, Oʻahu, Hawai'i. This film aims to engage and encourage our youth and the public to see these ancient living structures as fragile and highly important.
Dr. Gates, is also the Director of HIMB was a featured scientist on the new Netflix’s filmed called “Chasing Coral.”
The post-doctoral students and candidates, currently researching coral reef health and threats, will show us a day in the life of coral biology. We will get an exclusive view from their hands-on vantage point at world re-known coral reef lab - better known as HIMB located on Hawaii’s Moku o Lo'e (Coconut Island.) Video will encompass their exploration of underwater coral reefs, land-based tanks full of new growth coral and the microbiology labs where we see first-hand what a coral really looks like through the magnification of confocal microscopy.
Drone focused scenic overhead shots of what appears to be healthy coral reefs along with location footage of Coconut island (the location of where these biologists work) will enhance and explore the real story of coral through a colorful and stunning eye of a biologist - offering overall enjoyment for viewers. Archival footage will show biologists working on the ocean, mentoring new biologists and community outreach.
These biologists make up a rare and small sampling of those currently working around the world, discovering ways to save our world’s ocean ecology based on our corals, better known as the forests of the sea.

A special Mahalo Nui Loa to Kira Hughes, Chris Wall and Mariana Rocha de Souza for their invaluable assistance in the making of this film. And a huge heartfelt lei of gratitude to Dr. Ruth Gates for her tireless work, charismatic appeal, thoughtfulness and non-stop outreach.

Additional information regarding Coral Reef health and importance.
Hawai'i-based Gates Coral Lab biologists are first-responders when it comes to this critical moment in coral reef health both in the knowledge of what creates healthy corals and what is causing reefs to die. Gates biologists are also at the cutting edge of research and are acquiring what will be needed to assist coral reefs through warming ocean conditions, acidification and hopes for their ability to survive in the future.
Coral reefs, worldwide, are under serious threat from shore-side run-off (chemical pollution) human interaction, and damaging debris that catches and smothers the reefs, including the changes in salinity which helps to form coral colonies and the most serious issue to date, the warming of the ocean’s temperatures.
To help us better understand a warming ocean, a 2011 article by Wendy Zuckerman in New Scientist states, “As the world's oceans warm, their massive stores of dissolved carbon dioxide may be quick to bubble back out into the atmosphere and amplify the greenhouse effect, according to a new study. The oceans capture around 30 per cent of human carbon dioxide emissions and hide it in their depths.” (
