Beehive Stories: KANE COUNTY
During Kanab’s midcentury filmmaking heyday, Denny jumped right into the excitement—from horse wrangler to extra to stunt double, Denny did it all in “Utah’s Little Hollywood.” But when the movie trucks rolled away, a love of the Western way of life led Denny to a surprising new role, preserving a bygone era.

Visiting Horseshoe Bend In Arizona, USA Muslim Traveller - The Travels Of Z
Muslim Travel Vlog – The sweetest thing I saw in Arizona was a little white mosque when I was looking for a place to pray Asr prayer, it wasn't big but it looked very peaceful. I felt very grateful to the small Muslim community in that area. The community wasn't too big, didn't really see and halal food place, maybe there is, I missed it. In small Muslim communities like this people sometimes have to make a trip to nearest big city for halal meat. Anyway if you are looking for things to do in Arizona? Page? Flagstaff? Well, we found plenty, Horseshoe Bend in Page Arizona is one of the best views you can find in the west. Flagstaff on the other hand has quite a few museums but there’s none like Montezuma’s Castle National Monument and on our way we stopped by Kanab, Utah just so we can show you guys an amazing old west movie set museum, aka Little Hollywood Movie Set museum. Hope you like it and comment and let us know what you think about these locations. Cheers!!!

Horseshoe Bend
---------------------------
Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States. Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles (8.0 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Page. It is accessible via hiking a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) round trip from U.S. Route 89, but an access road also reaches the geological structure, as it is part of a state park. Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff above. The overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot (300 m) drop.
How to get here - From Page, AZ drive south on Highway 89 to between mileposts 544 & 545. Look for the exit lane and prominent dirt road on the west side of the road which you can drive a short distance on to the parking area.
Montezuma Castle National Monument
-----------------------------------------------------
Montezuma Castle National Monument protects a set of well-preserved dwellings located in Camp Verde, Arizona which were built and used by the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture closely related to the Hohokam and other indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States, between approximately 1100 and 1425 AD. The main structure comprises five stories and twenty rooms, and was built over the course of three centuries.
Neither part of the monument's name is correct. When European-Americans first observed the ruins in the 1860s, by then long-abandoned, they named them for the famous Aztec emperor Montezuma in the mistaken belief that he had been connected to their construction. In fact, the dwelling was abandoned more than 40 years before Montezuma was born, and was not a castle in the traditional sense, but instead functioned more like a prehistoric high rise apartment complex, as many families lived there. Several Hopi clans and Yavapai communities trace their ancestries to early immigrants from the Montezuma Castle/Beaver Creek area. Clan members periodically return to these ancestral homes for religious ceremonies.
Little Hollywood Museum Kanab
----------------------------------------------------
Kanab made its screen debut in 1924 when Tom Mix filmed Deadwood Coach along with his co-star, Tony The Wonder Horse. Since then over a hundred Hollywood productions have taken advantage of the diverse and spectacular landscapes that make Southern Utah one of the most stunning places on Earth. Credit for interest in Southern Utah as a Hollywood back lot goes to the Parry Brothers who leveraged their guiding business at Zion National Park into a virtual Hollywood production machine by luring influential filmmakers to the area. Cecile B DeMille raised the profile of this location when he made Union Pacific here. John Ford's Drums Along the Mohawk proved that Kane County could stand in not only for iconic western landscapes but also as rugged eastern forest land.

3 Hikers Die In Southwest Trial
They left their two young children with relatives and set off to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary at one of the most beautiful hiking destinations in the Southwest.
Months earlier, the luck of a draw had brought Anthony and Elisabeth Ann Bervel coveted hiking permits for The Wave, a region of richly colored sandstone patterns near the Utah-Arizona border.
But just hours into Monday's trek, 27-year-old Elisabeth Bervel died of cardiac arrest, becoming the third hiker in a month to succumb to the brutal summer heat and disorienting open country where no marked trail shows the way.
The deaths have prompted officials to reassess the dangers for people who make the hike and perhaps seek an outside investigation of the risks, said Kevin Wright, manager of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.
We're considering everything at this point, he said.
Only 20 hikers are granted permits each day, a limit defended as necessary to protect the rock formations and preserve a sense of wilderness around the signature rock formation said to be one of the most photographed spots in North America.
Hikers are given plenty of warnings about how to survive. They also get pictures of prominent landmarks and access to eight guides who can lead the way.
It's not like going to Zion National Park and hiking on an asphalt trail, said Kane County sheriff's Sgt. Alan Alldredge. Once you hit the slickrock, nothing distinguishes the trail.
It seems to go well for people going to The Wave, he added. But for some reasons on the way back, they end up getting lost.
The Bervels, of Mesa, Ariz., lost their way on a three-mile cross-country route back to a trailhead, forcing them to spend extra hours under blazing sun in 90-degree temperatures and humidity, he said.
Officials said Elisabeth Bervel's legs gave out hiking in soft sand, and her husband kept going to find a cellphone signal to call for help.
He appeared to be in no danger from the heat or exertion. But Kane County officials said he was distraught when he sat down Monday night to recount the tragedy. A phone listing for Anthony Bervel had been disconnected Tuesday.
This event once again demonstrates the inherent risks associated with hiking in southern Utah's desert country, the Kane County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Even though the Bervels had tried to make sure they were prepared for this hike, the elements proved to be stronger.
The latest death led to further questions about the lottery system that makes it hard to land a permit for the hike that starts in Utah before reaching The Wave in Arizona. More than 48,000 people applied last year for 7,300 available permits, officials said.
Half of the 20 daily permits are doled out on a walk-in basis at a visitor's center in Kanab, with as many as 100 people showing up to get a permit for the next day.
The rest are awarded through an online lottery, with winners given a specific hiking date months in the future. For many, it's a lifetime opportunity, and the difficulty in getting permits prompts some people to go in the heat of the summer.
On July 3, Ulrich and Patricia Wahli of Campbell, Calif., were found dead in 106-degree heat.
About a year ago, a 30-year-old California man who spent much of a day at The Wave and tried to return after nightfall died after falling into a slot canyon, officials said.
It does come back to personal discretion, and making choices, said Rachel Tueller, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Strip District of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which controls The Wave. Anytime you go out on public land, it's a risk. You have to know your own capabilities.
