Kanha National Park Safari with Friends | India | Part 1
Kanha Tiger Reserve, Central Indian wildlife abode where Tigers rule. Tall green Sal trees takes the jungle (Forest) to a whole different level. The green tint of Sal trees is contrasting to this hot and dry season. The place has its own charm. It is scary sometimes and full of joy the other minute. At times it is boring when you don't see animal activity and the other minute, super excited after Deer's call. The open meadows looked like a golf ground. With a small lake in it. This open place is lined by tall Sal trees. And the jeep route runs along the edge. Sunset here is a dream to watch. Whole area turns yellow with dusty air and magenta pink sky. Spring is about to end, dry season has started. A tree in Kisli zone is ready to shed it's red leafs. A Crested Serpent Eagle, sitting on next tree is looking forward for his mating season. The jungle has good amount of water. Creepers are all over a hill. As per our driver cum wildlife expert cum resort owner cum 15 years of Kanha resident, Rahul, all the three seasons are extreme. In summer it goes above 40 deg, in winter it drops below 5 degrees and the rainy season... well you have seen the landslide in The Jungle Book movie.

kanha national park information how to book online ticket in hindi
The Kanha National Park was originally a part of the Gondwanas or the land of the Gonds. The forest of the Kanha Tiger Reserve was inhibited by two indigenous tribes of Central India, the Gonds and the Baigas. The vicinity of the reserve is still occupied with the villagers of these tribes.
Located in Mandla and Balaghat districts, the Kanha Tiger Reserve is being occupied by two major sanctuaries, the Hallon and the Banjar Sanctuaries. Respectively covering the area of 250 sq km and 300 sq km, the Kanha Reserve together forms a greater area of 1,949 sq km.
The chronology of the Kanha National Park makes it more simplified:
1800- Before 19th century, the area was being ruled by the Gond dynasty since many centuries and the Kanha Forest was little known since the slash and burn cultivation methods of both the Baiga and Gond tribes were being dominated at that area. They had good knowledge of the animals and their behaviors.
1862- It marks an important year during 19th century in the history of the Kanha National Park when the first forest management rules were instituted and cutting of various tree species like Sal, Teak, Saja, Shisham and Bija without official authorization were prohibited.
1857-1871 This period has a remarkable importance as the Kanha reserve area is best known to come into existence when Captain J. Forsyth wrote a classic The Highlands of Central India. This book (published in 1913) is a highly readable combination of ethnography, forest survey and personal memoir (with dashes of shikar diary thrown in for good measure). Captain J. Forsyth, an officer in the Bengal Staff Corps discovered Panchmarhi hill located in Satpura National Park in Central India.
1879- The Kanha Area was declared as a reserve forest.
1880- The year 1880 which was called the British era, made this region of Madhya Pradesh more valuable when the central provinces was made the center stage of Rudyard Kipling's imaginations for The Jungle Book stories. The tremendous landscapes in the forest of Kanha and Pench are really magnanimous.
1923- The year when a landmark classic book published, entitled Wild Animals in Central India that completely focused on the Kanha region's wildlife. The book was written by A. A. Dunbar Brander, a government official and a keenly observant amateur naturalist.
1933- The year when the Kanha forest area was declared as sanctuary.
1935- The same status was concurred in the eastern sector to Supkhar in year 1935, but within few years the protection for wildlife in this area came to an end due to damages caused by the animals to the field crops, Sal saplings and livestock. Over the next 20 years, shooting of deer and tiger was periodically allowed.
1947-51 The king of Vijaynagaram shot 30 tigers in the Kanha Forest Reserve.
1955-75 This period highlighted and introduced the new national park to the forefront in wildlife research and conservation efforts.
1963-65 When the American scientist George Schaller carried out initiating and detailed research on the Kanha ecosystem.
1967- His research was published as an influential book in 1967 with the title The Deer and the Tiger.
1969- In the early 1969, the park management began to relocate villages within the core area like Sonf, Bishanpura and Gorhela and a good management between the reserve and the neighborhood area has been the key factor of its success in the conservation efforts.
1970- In 1970 successful attempts were made to save the hard ground Barasingha, the jewel of Kanha from extinction. A special enclosure was made inside the forest to encourage the breeding and to protect them from wild beasts. Further, the rate of the Barasingha species took a hop from 66 to 400-500 range.

Kanha Safari Ride, Indian Tiger Reserve June 2012
Kanha National Park is one of the biggest park in Madhya Pradesh, India.'Kanha National Park' is a national park and a Tiger Reserve in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, India. In the 1930s, Kanha area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, of 250 and 300 km² . Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955. Today it stretches over an area of 940 km² in the two districts Mandla and Balaghat. Together with a surrounding buffer zone of 1,067 km² and the neighboring 110 km² Phen Sanctuary it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve.[1] This makes it the largest National Park in Central India.
The park has a significant population of Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, the sloth bear, Barasingha and Indian wild dog. The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel Jungle Book
Currently one of the dominant male tigers of Kanha National Park is a tiger named Munna. Munna is famous for his large size, big head and has symbol CAT written on his head.
Jabalpur, the most convenient place to approach the Park from, has the nearest airport (175 km), Nagpur (260 km) and Raipur(219 km) have other airports, Mandla (70 km) has a good connection with Kanha and there is a tourist taxi service from Jabalpur to the national park. From Jabalpur, the best way to travel is via Mandla and Nainpur - perhaps with an overnight stop - then taking the diversion at Bamhni. Mandla, Nainpur and Seoni all have sports clubs, Internet cafes, guides, Christian churches and some beautiful temples.
There are three gates for entrance into the Park. The Kisli gate is best accessed from Jabalpur and stops at the village Khatia, inside the buffer area. The second gate is at Mukki and the third, most recently opened, gate is at Serai.
Satpura National Park is located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh in India. Its name is derived from the Satpura range. It covers an area of 524 km2 (202 sq mi). Satpura National Park, along with the adjoining Bori and Panchmarhi wildlife sanctuaries, provides 1,427 km2 (551 sq mi) of unique central Indian highland ecosystem. It was set up in 1981.
There is a project to capture about 20 Bengal tiger and relocate them from Kanha National Park.
Kanha is virtually a tiger land, with several tigresses occupying traditionally famous natal areas. Several pockets of high density areas lead to competition amongst tigers for food and space with several signs indicating their presence. Inter group fights among tigers and cub morality caused by male tigers is common in Khana. There is a rich assemblage of co-predators and prey animals. Packs of Wild dogs chasing large herds of Spotted deer are a commonsight in Kanha. Perhaps the most precious animal of Kanha is the Central Indian Barasingha. This Swamp deer is the last world population of the hard ground subspecies, which has virtually been saved from extinction owing to concerned efforts under Project Tiger. Barasinghas have also been located successfully to the eastern Halon Valley of the park, which was their original home.
Other common animals found in the reserve are leopard, Spotted deer, Sambar, Wild pigs, Grey langur and more than 300 species of birds. The places of tourist attraction here are Shravan Tal, Shravan Chita, Macha Dongar, Bamni Dadar famous for breathtaking sunset view, orientation centre/museum and grasslands of Mukki and Sonf. Similar to Bandhavgarh, Kanha also allows wildlife lovers to catch glimpses of natives from an elephant back apart from jungle excursions in open vehicles.
