Trip to island of Shodoshima Japan
Shōdoshima is an island in Japan’s Seto Island Sea. On the south coast, olives grow in the hillside groves at Shōdoshima Olive Garden. At low tide, Angel Road sandbar links 3 tiny islets to the main island. Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village has the preserved set of a popular Japanese film, plus a cinema museum. In the center of the island, trails and a cable car cross Kankakei Gorge, known for its vibrant fall foliage.

NHK World 2015 Journeys in Japan Daniela Shiga: Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
[ Journeys in JapanJ ] Savoring Fall on Shodoshima
Though Romanian, some of my ancestors come from Greece. So finding a place in Japan that was full of olive trees and Greek statues just like in the Hellenic country, enjoying mild weather similar to the Mediterranean, was the last thing I ever expected. I traveled by ferry in the Seto Inland Sea to reach Shodoshima, which is often called Japan's Aegean as well as the Olive Island.
Starting with a single sapling planted 100 years ago, there are now thousands of olive trees on the island. Since I visited during the harvesting season, I appreciated the olives in all their colorful stages of ripening, from yellowish green to royal purple to deep, reddish black. I plucked them from the trees and helped make olive oil at a factory. Later, I enjoyed what turned out to be a most delicious meal, a mixture of traditional seasonings combined with the magic of olives.
Another thing that surprised me was the joviality and the rather Latin spirit of the Shodoshima people. I blended into the community fairly quickly, which is not always so easy to do as a foreigner in Japan. People readily opened up to me - and friendships blossomed - during the bento lunch making event and while watching a kabuki performance. The loveliness of it all is that one can also mingle with the pilgrims that come all year round to visit the many temples and shrines scattered around the island. That is an unusual spiritual experience even for Japanese.
So how many uses can we find for the olive trees? Come with me and I will show you a whole range from oil making and dying clothes using the leaves to preparing healthy foods.
Shodoshima is the 2nd largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. Blessed with warm, mild weather, the island has nurtured a distinctive culture. Traveler Daniela Shiga enjoys local food, a kabuki performance and a magical hike at the peak of autumn. From olden times, the olive has been a symbol of peace and prosperity, as well as food with life enhancing benefits. Shodoshima is famous for its high-quality olives, which are on par with those of the Mediterranean. Olive farming was introduced to the island during the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) as part of a government program. Since then, islanders have nurtured their groves with great care. Daniela visits a 3rd-generation olive farmer and later speaks to an artist who produces handicrafts using threads dyed naturally with olive leaves. She also learns about the island's tradition of soy sauce making and joins pilgrims on part of their trek to mountain temples. Her final destination is a shrine where the locals, including school children, perform kabuki.
Places Daniela visited:
Inoue Seikoen, Olive Dyeing Atelier Konohana, Shokinshoyu, Creative Cuisine Nonoka, Shodoshima Tourism Association: 1896-1 Nishimurako, Shodoshima-cho, Shozu-gun, Kagawa Prefecture

EATING OLIVE ICE CREAM? |Day 80 - Kagawa
Shodoshima (小豆島, Shōdoshima) is the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea and one of the first islands born to the gods in the creation myth of Japan. The name literally means small bean island, which technically refers to the azuki bean but today would more fittingly refer to the soy bean or olive as the island has traditionally been a producer of soy sauce and now is even better known for its olive plantations.
Shodoshima attracts visitors with its Mediterranean atmosphere, offering beaches, resorts, coastal sceneries and a mountainous interior with one of Japan's most celebrated gorges, the Kankakei Gorge. The island is also known as the filming location of a popular movie.

Staying on Shodoshima Island - An Inviting Labyrinth
Shodoshima, in Kagawa, is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, with a population of about 30,000. A mild climate and beautiful scenery make it a popular tourist destination with over 100,000 overseas visitors a year, but convenient access meant most visitors came and left the same day. To encourage overnight stays, a group of students at Kagawa University proposed making guesthouses out of unused homes in an old part of town that’s a fascinating maze of narrow alleys. Their project is now receiving enthusiastic support from the islanders.

This time I go to the sea. Just to meet Angel Road. This is the tide road that opens to the island twice a day because of the tide. And the promises of love that make this place more special. Many lovers find Angel Rod here to confirm their love. I hope I will be able to stay with you in the future. Will it be done if I walk the Angel Road? I hope it will be done. It's up to you to do it yourself. I will continue to cherish. I will cross it with such a determination. On that day, the couple promised to marry Angel Road at sunset.

The gorge of Kankakei (寒霞渓 Kanka-kei) is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty on the island of Shōdo-shima, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan.[1] Part of the Setonaikai National Park, the heights rise to 812 m.[2] The area is celebrated for its Japanese maple trees.[3] Volunteers formed a preservation society in 1898 and when, in 1912, expropriation of the area was attempted, a soy sauce magnate stepped in to ensure its preservation.[4] In 1927 Kankakei was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan.[5]
Angels Road, Shodoshima in Japan
My Fiancée and I visited Shodoshima and the Great Seto Inland Sea In August 2016. While there we visited the famous Angels Road in the town of Tonosho.
It is believed that if walk across the sand bar to the first island hand in hand with your significant other, you will live a happy life together.
After walking to the first island, we found another larger sandbar to an even larger island that is used as a YMCA camp.
