Kanmon Underwater Pedestrian Tunnel ☆ Fukuoka/Yamaguchi ☆ Japan As It Truly Is
Anyone who goes to the southern edge of Honshu or the northern tip of Kyushu will marvel at the Kanmon bridge, but there's also a vehicle and pedestrian tunnel under the sea floor, and you can walk from one island to the other. The 780m long Kanmon pedestrian tunnel took over 20 years to build (1937-1958) and today is actually free to use. See where one prefecture and island ends, and another starts - literally under water. It's one of the easiest ways to go from Kitakyushu City to Shimonoseki.

May 5, 2018. You can walk or take a bicycle across the two most populous Japanese islands, Honshu and Kyushu, by taking the 780m long Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel. Access the tunnel via lifts located in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Kyushu island (shown) or Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Honshu island. The Mitsubishi elevator has the oldest fixtures, for the tunnel was built back in 1958. Enjoy some of my favorite elevators found in Japan.
Did I also mention that the Mitsubishi has room for 40 people?

WOW! Yamaguchi city is amazing! | 1st day | Slurp In Japan | Ep. 5 | Yael & Roy's Mania | Japan Vlog
YAMAGUCHI CITY!!
I've been waiting to get to Yamaguchi since I booked my flight to Japan. The most exciting adventure for me in Japan is being in Yamaguchi city.
Why?
Because I was lucky enough to get invited to study how to make proper Japanese Ramen in a local Ramen shop in Yamaguchi city.
For those of you who just started following our channel
( if you haven't yet - Don't forget to subscribe!)
My obsession is Ramen. Ever since I tasted a real Japanese ramen, I was hooked.
I'm determined to learn how to make a proper Japanese ramen.
So since I came back from my previous trip to Japan on February 2017 -
I've been reading, studying and practicing the art of making ramen but I knew that I had to go and see how they really do it in Japan.
So as I said before - I was lucky enough, and a dear friend of mine helped me fulfill this dream.
This video shows the first day of my stay in Yamaguchi city.
Thanks to my local friends - it was such an amazing day, full of beautiful sightseeing and GREAT!!! Food and drinks.
Yamaguchi is a small city ( compared to other Japanese cities ) located in a valley surrounded by mountains, with a small population of around 200,000 people. Yamaguchi area has a lot of natural hot spring water baths, also known as onsen:
- An onsen (温泉) is a Japanese hot spring; the term also extends to cover the bathing facilities and traditional inns frequently situated around a spring.
There are Even public small Feet-Onsens (Hashiyu) all over the cities that you can use if you want to give your feet a little hot-spring-water relaxation ( be careful, the water is very hot ! ).
On my first day, I meet with some of my local friends here ( Brain and Yoshimi, I love you guys! ). We drove around the town for a bit and went to see a local famous Buddhist temple, Rurikō-ji (瑠璃光寺 Rurikō-ji), with its five-story pagoda. During this whole time, Yoshimi, which speaks perfect English, decided that I should practice my Japanese, so she spoke only Japanese with me. It was hard, but fun and very helpful!
After a short stop at a feet-onsen, we went to eat and get some beer and food from 2 different local Izakayas. An izakaya (居酒屋) is a type of informal Japanese pub. They are casual places for after-work drinking and usually has a variety of Japanese Dishes that serves to the middle of the table and shared by the table.
Food is usually ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. The kitchen will serve the food when it is ready rather than in the formal courses of Western restaurants.
It was so much fun! Here is what we got to eat:
- Takowasa: raw octopus heavily flavored with wasabi
- Hakata style Gyoza
- Yaki Nasu: Japanese Grilled Eggplant
- Gyoza soup
- Fried rice
- Daikon to Konnyaku no Nimono: A common izakaya side dish
- Sashimi plate
- Namagaki: raw oyster with lemon
- Deep fried Fugu ( Blow-fish - Yamaguchi's specialty )
- Corn kakiage fritters: Japanese fresh corn tempura
- Beef Tataki: tataki refers to beef or fish that is quickly seared over high heat, leaving the center very rare.
- Korokke: deep-fried potato croquette.
It was an amazing day, in a beautiful place, great people and very delicious food!
