Hitoshi Abe - Four Issues of Building I Am Interested In
Hitoshi Abe is the Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles and Principal of his own Japan based firm Atelier Hitoshi Abe. Known for architecture that is spatially complex and structurally innovative, the work of Atelier Hitoshi Abe has been published internationally and received numerous awards, including the 2009 Contract World Award for Aobatei, the 2008 SIA-Getz Prize for Emergent Architecture in Asia and the 2007 World Architecture Award for M/Kanno Museum.
Abe founded Atelier Hitoshi Abe in 1993 in Sendai, Japan and recently opened a second office in Los Angeles. Some of his key projects located in Japan include the Aoba-tei restaurant, F-town, which is an eat-and-drink building filled with bars and restaurants in Sendai, the Miyagi Stadium in Rifu, SSM/Kanno Museum in Shiogama, and the Reihoku Community Hall in Kumamoto. He is currently in construction on a new campus building for the Vienna University of Economics and Business in Vienna, Austria.
Professor Abes work is the subject of two monographs, Hitoshi Abe Flicker (TOTO) from his 2005 exhibition at Gallery Ma in Tokyo and Hitoshi Abe, published by Phaidon in 2009.
Abe earned an M.Arch from SCI-Arc in 1988 and a PhD. from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan in 1993.
Lectures are free and open to the public. They are located in the Gin D. Wong, FAIA Conference Center, Harris Hall, on the University Park campus. No reservations are required. Parking is available on campus at Gate 1 off Exposition Blvd.
