Winemaker Abrie Beeslaar at Kanonkop in South Africa
Kanonkop is undoubtedly one of the top wine estates in South Africa.
Kanonkop is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain just outside the litle village Stellenbosch in the Cape Region.
Wine maker Abrie Breslaar at Kanonkop is focusing on full-bodied and concentrated wines and in my book, they are the king of Pinotage.
Abrie walked away with International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London in 2008 and openly boasts about their Kanonkop Black Label.
Let´s meet with fourth generation owner Johann Krige and wine maker Abrie Beeslaar and hear how their team keeping a strong focus on the best potential for aging the long lived red wines.

South African Wine x Through my Wine Glass at Kanonkop Wine Estate
Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines.
Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owgners Paul &
Johann Krige.
Kanonkop
The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.

Tasting notes - Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2018, South African Dry Rosé wine, from Stellenbosch
Pinotage - South Africa's signature variety. Combining the best qualities of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, which was a very bold move when these two grapes were first crossed in 1925, to form the single varietal that it is today. Pinotage is a one-of-a-kind rustic red wine that is earthy, very fruit-driven and rarely found anywhere else in the world other than in South Africa.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards- Stellenbosch,South Africa
We are out and about visiting a wine estate at the top of the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It's an absolute icon in the South African wine landscape and listen to this... it was recently rated one of the world's top 100 estates! Can you guess where we are yet? Today we are at Thelema Mountain Vineyards for something extraordinary, the Thelema Merlot Reserve 2014. August is Merlot month at Friends of the Vine so I've decided to do a little pre-testing and tasting of my own and try 3 of the industry's most talked about award winning Merlots of which Thelema is one.
