Kanowna nr Kalgoorlie, WA
Kanowna is a ghost town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. It is located about 20 km east of Kalgoorlie.
After the discovery of gold in the area in 1893, the townsite was gazetted in 1894.[1] and the population grew from 2,500 in 1897 to over 12,500 by 1899.[2] However, the alluvial gold supply was rapidly exhausted and underground mines following the outcropping vein produced decreasing amounts of gold, resulting in a slow but steady decrease in the population. The railway station was closed during the Great Depression, and by 1953 the town had been abandoned. The railway station platform, two cemeteries and mine workings are all that is left of the original town of Kanowna. Signs erected by the Kalgoorlie Historical society mark the sites of significant buildings.
Increasing gold prices in the late 1970s sparked renewed interest in exploring the geology of the area for new sources of gold. The discovery of a large amount of gold, previously undiscovered because the vein did not reach the surface, made gold mining in the region economically viable again. Mining recommenced in 1986, initially as open-cut mining, before moving to underground mines. As of 2002, the Kanowna Belle mine employed over 300 people.

Kanowna - Ghost Town - Western Australia
In 1905 there were 12 000 people living in this gold mining town 18 km north east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. There were 16 hotels, two breweries and an hourly train service to Kalgoorlie. Fortunes were made overnight as the miners, like a plague of locusts, swept through the area. One of the early miners, Tom O'Connor, walked away from the field with the extraordinary sum of £15 000. All of his gold had been found in a claim which was adjacent to the local cemetery so, in a decision showing no respect for the dead and a huge respect for gold fever, the cemetery was opened up to mining. By 1912 it was no longer a municipality. During the Depression the post office and the railway closed. The school closed down after the war and the last hotel closed its doors in 1952. Nothing now remains except rubble and memories.

Travel Channel | Australia | Western Australia | Lake Ballard | Kalgoorlie | Karalee Rocks | Road Trip
This is our last day on the desert road trip. I get up early to take in the beauty of this place one last time and take some photos. Once leaving the salt lake behind us we are striking gold, quite literally. Our last night is spent in Kalgoorlie, a gold mining town with Australia's second largest open cut goldmine and even get to see a blast. The next day we are headed back to Perth. On the way we stop at a place called Karalee Rocks and decide to go for a bit of an explore. Surrounded in bush land a huge rock outcrop dominates the area which provides the perfect ending to a fantastic road trip into WA's interior.
