『八一四空戰』 2015版 (full scene)
The August 14, 1937 Air Battle Over Hangchow, now commemorated as Republic of China Air Force Day
reel edition (third of three):
from the 2015-16 Peoples Republic of China 66-episode TV drama series 「东方战场」 (Dongfang Zhanchang; English title Eastern Battlefields, Episode 20).
From the 2015 Peoples Republic of China TV drama series 「东方战场」 (Dongfang Zhanchang; English title Eastern Battlefields, Episode 20), the full-length scene dramatizing the ROC Air Force's initial air battle to defend their main airbase at Schien-schaio near Hangchow (Jianqiao, Hangzhou) from Japanese air attack on August 14, 1937.
The ROCAF's Fourth Pursuit Group led by COL Kao Chih-hang (1907-1937), equipped with American-built Curtiss Hawk III biplane fighters, intercepted two groups of nine Mitsubishi G3M2 Type 96 (later Allied code-name Nell) twin-engined bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy Kanoya Kokutai led by LCDR Shinichi Nitta staging from the then-Japanese colony of Taiwan, intending to knock out the ROCAF base at Schien-schaio in the opening stage of the Battle of Shanghai. Expecting little Chinese opposition, the unescorted Japanese bombers ran into fierce resistance from the antiquated but well-positioned ROCAF fighters, ultimately losing three bombers with a fourth totalled from damage upon crash-landing at Matsuyama Airfield, Taihoku (now Taipei's Sungshan Airport); Chinese losses were one pilot mortally wounded and another slightly injured in crash landings after running out of fuel.
This was considered a spectacular victory by the Chinese, and as a result August 14 has been commemorated as Air Force Day in the Republic of China ever since.

STORYLINE:
A vintage Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane made its first-ever flight over the skies of Japan since World War II on Wednesday.
The Zero, considered one of the most capable long-range fighter jets of the period and as an to equivalent the legendary British Spitfire, made its successful take off from a Japanese Self-Defence Force base in Southern Japan.
The flight holds some significance for the Japanese people with many regarding the aircraft as a symbol of Japan's technological prowess, while also serving as a reminder of an unpleasant period in the country's history.
The plane was known for its use in Kamikaze attacks during the final phases of the war.
Kamikaze pilots took off for their missions from the very same location as Wednesday's flight - Kanoya Naval Air Base.
Taking place over 70 years after the war against the Allies ended, the flight was piloted not by a Japanese pilot but by a highly decorated former US Air Force pilot, Skip Holm.
This plane piloted by Holm was found in disrepair in Papua New Guinea in the 1970s.
Under the ownership of a US citizen, the Zero was eventually restored to flying condition.
The plane supposedly made an appearance in the Hollywood film Pearl Harbor and is oftern seen at various event in the US.
Masahiro Ishizuka, a Japanese businessman, purchased the plane from the former US owner with the hope to fly it over Japan for the first time after the war.
However, fulfilling his dream didn't come cheap.
Ishizuka and a group of others set up an online campaign to collect donations that could be used to fund the shipment of the aircraft to Japan.
The Zero arrived in Japan last September and, following an arduous process to get flight approval, Wednesday's flight finally became possible.
Around four to six Zero fighters are said to be operational throughout the world, but Ishizuka's aircraft is the only one owned by a Japanese person.

Raw: WWII Fighter Plane Takes to the Skies
(27 Jan 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBERS: 4020996, 4021023
One of Mitsubishi's legendary Zero fighter planes took to the skies over Japan on Wednesday for the first time since World War II.
The restored plane made a brief flight to and from a naval base in southern Japan. Decorated former US Air Force pilot Skip Holm flew the aircraft.
Zero fighters were considered one of the most capable long-range fighter planes in World War II, rivalling the British Spitfire. Only a few are still in operating condition.
This particular plane was found decaying in Papua New Guinea in the 1970s. It was owned by an American until Japanese businessman Masahiro Ishizuka purchased it and brought it to Japan last September.
The Japanese see the aircraft both as a symbol of their country's technological advance and a reminder of the harrowing history of the war. In the last phase of the fighting, they were used for kamikaze attacks.
Kamikaze pilots took off from the same airfield as Wednesday's flight, Kanoya Naval Air Base on the island of Kyushu.
Under its previous American owner, the plane made an appearance in the Hollywood movie Pearl Harbor and at various events in the United States.
