Begusarai is located at 25.42°N 86.13°E.It has an average elevation of 41 metres (134 feet). It has an area of 1879 square.Begusarai lies in North Bihar and is surrounded by Khagaria in North-East, Munger in South-East, Patna in West and Samastipurin North-West.
Begusarai lies in the middle of the mid Gangaplain and generally has low lying terrain with South to South Easterly slope.Begusarai is basically divided in three flood plains namely :1 Ganga Flood Plain 2. Burhi Gandak Flood plain 3. Kareha-Bagmati Flood Plain
About Kanwar Lake - The Kanwar Taal or Kabar Taal Lake located in Begusarai district of Bihar, India, is Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake.[citation needed] It is approximately three times the size of the Bharatpur Sanctuary.
Ornithologist Salim Ali, mentioned about 60 migratory birds that come all the way from Central Asia in winter and recorded around 106 species of resident birds.
Kanwar lake was declared a notified area under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. To check poaching of birds, it was declared a protected zone by the Bihar state government in 1986; the government of India declared it a bird sanctuary in 1989. The authorities had notified 15,000 acres (one acre equals 0.4 ha) in the area as wetland, which makes it six times bigger than Kaladeo National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan—another well-known bird sanctuary of India.

कावर झील एशिया की सबसे बड़ी शुद्ध जल की झील है और यह पक्षी अभ्यारण्य (बर्ड सेन्च्युरी ) भी है। इस बर्ड सेंचुरी मे 59 तरह के विदेशी पक्षी ठंडे के मौसम मे देखे जा सकते हैं। यह बिहार का सबसे बड़ा पक्षी विहार है। इसे बड़े पर्यटन स्थल के रूप में विकसित किया जा सकता है, परंतु वर्तमान में यह सरकारी उदासीनता का शिकार है।
