Mylapore's Ancient Past
Ptolemy, the Creek Geographer (A.D. 90-168) has referred to Mylapore in his books as ‘Millarpha;,. It was apparently a weel-known sea port town with a flourishing trade. It must have also been a place of culture, as Saint, Tiruvalluvar the celebrated author of Tirukkurl, the Wordl-famous ethical treatise, lived in Mylapore nearly 2,000 years ago. The Saivite Saints of the 7th Century, Saint Sambandar and Saint Appar, have sung about the Shrine in their hymns.
St. Thomas, one of the aposties of Jesus, is reported to have visited Mylapore in the 2nd Century A.D. His tomb is in the St. Thomas basilica, a beautiful Cathedral about half a mile from the temple.
Mylapore fell into the hands of the Portuguese in A.D.1566, when the temple suffered demolition. The presne temple was rebuilt 300 years ago. There are some fragmentary inscriptions from the old temple, still found in the present Shrine and in St. Thomas Cathedral.
One enters the hall then, where Arulmigu Karpagambal is enshrined. In front of the Goddess, outside, is a Stone sculpture of a Lion, the mount of the Goddess. (Just as Nandi or the Bull is for Lord).
Daily And Special Servies
There are six daily Puja Services. Kala Santhi (morning) Uchchikala (Mid-day) Sayamkala (Evening) and Ardhajama (late Night). The evening Service will be picturesque as the Shodasa Upacharas (16 Propitiations) with waving of lights. etc. ared performed. Other special occasions are Pradhosa (13th day of new moon-full moon) Panchaparva. etc.

Rare video of India in the 1920's: Hindu temple in Chennai (Madras) Southern India
This rare 16 mm black and white film was taken by American tourists traveling in India in the late 1920's. After touring Northern India and the Himalayas, they travel south to the city of Madras (now Chennai). Here they visit a Hindu Temple (possibly Kapaleeswarar Temple). With its large tower heavily encrusted with sculptures it is typical of HIndu temples of Southern India.

The two trips I took to India in February and November of 2018 changed my life. After an amazing first day in Chennai, we picked up right where we left off on day two! Come and join me, Sam, and our friend Deepak for a southern Indian breakfast feast and a visit to a local temple!
My Film Making Kit ►
We started off our day at Eating Circles Restaurant, an intimate breakfast spot in a small, modern space. There, we had the biggest breakfast I’ve ever had, which included four dosas, puris, Sabudana Pongal, Khichdi, Sambar Vada, Maddur Vada, Masal Vada, Bangalore Sambar, and Chennai Sambar.
We started with the dosa and Chennai Sambar. It was a little spicy, and the dosa had a nice crunch on the outside with a doughy center. Next was the Bangalore Sambar, which was nice and sweet. I liked the Bangalore better!
Up next was the Khichdi, which is a rice and lentil dish that also contained nuts and vegetables. It had a consistency similar to polenta and wasn’t too over the top with a lot of flavors, but I really liked it.
The next dish I tried was the Sabudana Pongal, a rice, dal, and vegetable dish that contains little jelly balls called javvarisi. It was kind of sweet. I tried it by itself and then with the vada, which is a savory doughnut that’s crispy on the outside. I loved the vada with the mint chutney! The vada absorbs the mint chutney, which was amazing!
Next was the sambar vada, which is a vada that has been soaked in sambar. It had a nice, sweet tomato base that was rich in flavors. We followed that with the puri, which I tried with the potato masala, which is like mashed potatoes, but with carrots and a lot more flavor and spices. Then I tried it with the tomato chutney, which was mild at first but had some heat that snuck up on me, so I cooled down with some rose milk. It was refreshing and delicious and exactly what I needed!
Our next dish was a red rice dosa, which had a reddish tint to it and came with mint and tomato chutneys and sambar. The dosa had a completely different taste than a regular dosa. After trying it with the mint and then the tomato, I combined the two. The combination of the red rice, mint, and tomato was phenomenal!
We followed that with the butter dosa and potato mash with some sambar. It was like a delicious butter overload! Then we went with the Neer Dosa, which looked more like a sponge and was served with coconut flakes and mint and tomato chutneys. It was like a gooey, gelatinous pancake and the coconut was so rich in flavor!
The Masal Vada, which is a deep-fried vegetable patty, was up next. I loved it with the mint chutney! Then it was time for some filtered coffee, which is like a perfect café con leche and was very milky and sugary. Then Sam and I swapped places so he could try the Mysore Dosa, which has chilies and masala potatoes in the center.
With breakfast done, we headed to one of the most famous Hindu temples in Chennai, Kapaleeswarar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built 1,300 years ago in the 7th century! We took our shoes off and entered through the main gate. Inside, there are houses to the gods where people pray and a sitting hall.
The temple is a beautiful example of Tamil architecture, which you can also find in Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. On top of the temple is a colorful collection of gods, while the base looks very ancient. We went into the shaded sitting area and listened to some live music and then Deepak applied some sacred vibhuti ash and kumkuma to my forehead and put a holy thread around my wrist. I love immersing myself in the cultures of the places I visit.
I hope you enjoyed our southern Indian breakfast and temple visit! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel!

Kapaleeswarar Temple Chennai
We are in Chennai. People here were originally from the Indus valley civilization and relocated to southern India maybe 1500 BC - Mohenjo Daro (so pushed out by Iranian people who crossed the Hindu Kush - 1200 years before Alexander the Great came to India). Madras/Chennai was known since antiquity in the west and was written about by the ancient greeks. A dominant empire here Pallava built the Kapaleeswarar temple we visited today - in about 800 AD but it was later destroyed by the Portugese (shortly after the time of Vasco da Gama) and rebuilt from the original stones 300 years ago. The scripts/alphabet here were the foundation for Khmer and Thai scripts - so you can imagine the influence. Amazing place, a living city and total time travel to another age. Madras was a major seaport since antiquity with ships sailing from the straight of Malacca to here for thousands of years. Anyway, fun!

Kaalikambal Temple
George Town
History
Kaalikambal Temple is part of the tradition of naming the port cities of Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai after the goddess consecrated in a temple on the seashore. Chennamman lent her name to Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu. She was the presiding deity of Chennai Kuppam, an old settlement in the 17th century CE. The area where the temple now exists was called Maratta town. This changed to Muthialpet and Pavazhakaara Theru – Coral Merchant Street. This area was also called Chennamman Kuppam. The presiding deity of Chennamman Kuppam was Kali and now she is called Kalikambal. For more than 500 years Vishwakarmas (artisans and craftsmen’s community) worshipped Kalika as their family deity. The temple is being maintained by Vishwakarmas.
The temple was originally located closer to the sea shore and was relocated to the current site at 1640 AD. It was then built in 1678. Shivaji, the Maratha warrior and the founder of the Hindawi-Swarajya in the 17th century, had worshiped in this temple incognito on 3 October 1667. It is interesting to note that he came to be called as Chatrapati after worshipping the deity. It is believed that a fierce form of Goddess was held in worship earlier and that this form was replaced with the Shanta Swaroopam (calm posture) form of Goddess. The great Tamil poet, Subramanya Bharathiyar, when he was working for Swadeshi Mithran, used to visit this temple often. He song the famous “Yadumaki Ninrai Kali” song on this deity. The famous TMS’s song ‘Ullam Uruhuthaiya’ was sung for the first time here only, in 1952 by Sri Andavan Pichai.
