Day Trip From Athens to Cape Sounion to See The Temple of Poseidon + Amazing Greek Food in Lavrion
We decided to take a family day trip from Athens to Cape Sounion, which is about a 1 hour drive from the Greek capital. Located at the southernmost tip of Attica, Cape Sounion (sometimes also called Cape Sounio) houses the Ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon. This is a great activity for those who want to escape and the hustle and bustle of Athens on a hot day, and just a fun and accessible activity for families in general.
Perched on the promontory of Cape Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon towers over the endless Aegean Sea with its seemingly infinite islands. It offers some of the most amazing views in the world, I don't believe my video does it justice in that department: we were truly left in awe by the amazing view here!
After visiting Cape Sounion on a blazing hot summer day, we were left starving. We asked our driver to find us a great spot for some delicious traditional Greek Food, and he brought us to the port city of Lavrion (Also known as Lavriou or Laurium), which used to be the ancient silver mine of the Athenians. There we ate at this small, understated yet beckoning restaurant called Psarou.
Wow! The meal was incredible!
They served up some amazing Greek Food, including one of the best grilled fish meals we ate in Greece. It was also great since it was really, really hot that day and a lot of the restaurants by the beach were over-crowded and didn't offer AC. With kids, especially one that was turning a little red, this was just perfect! Other travelling families will know just what I'm talking about... ;)

Side note: Robyn forgot her purse with many important documents and our credit cards at the restaurant. I want to give a huge shout out to PK Travel who went made the 1 hour drive later that evening from Athens and back to get it for her. Their customer service was so exceptional it left us emotional, they really went the extra mile for us (some pun intended) and this is by no means an ad for them. Give them a shout if you're ever in Athens and need to get around, here's their link:

About us: We are Daniel, Robyn, Ava, Rose and Ella, and together we are The Go To Family. We love to travel! We also love food, exploring historical sites and, of course, doing loads of fun things together as a family.
In our videos, you will see me and Robyn tackle every obstacle that traveling with kids throws at us. We do traveling almost exactly the same way we did before having kids, it just takes a little bit more planning these days. The result, however, is simply more fun! It's also very rewarding to be able to show the kids new cultures and live new experiences with them at the same time. Our mission is to inspire other Millennials to travel with kids.
Our 7-year-old daughter, Ava, also has her own YouTube channel. Feel free to check it out right here:

Temple of Poseidon - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Cape Sounion, Greece)
On our first day of landing into Athens, we drove directly down to Cape Souion to see the Temple of Poseidon! The area and views are beyond amazing! It was an interesting 40-50 mile drive from Athens (You'll see! lol) and very worth it!! The houses are very expensive in this part of Greece and it's a hidden paradise on the Aegean sea.
There is free parking at the temple, so no problems there! The temple is surrounded like a chain-link fence where by the main gate is closed during the night. However, you'll find many people hopping the fence at night and walking up to the temple (I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist!)
When we arrived, it was night time. There is a gift shop and cafe here and the cafe has an outdoor seating area which can be accessed 24/7. So we decided to crack open some ouzo and enjoy the lit-up temple at night! Bright and early the next day, we paid entry and visited the temple!
The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444–440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, i.e., it had a front portico with six columns.[9] Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 34: 15 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m (20 ft) high, with a diameter of 1 m (3.1 ft) at the base and 79 cm (31 inches) at the top.[10]
At the centre of the temple colonnade would have been the hall of worship (naos), a windowless rectangular room, similar to the partly intact hall at the Temple of Hephaestus. It would have contained, at one end facing the entrance, the cult image, a colossal, ceiling-height (6 metres (20 ft)) bronze statue of Poseidon.[11] Probably covered in gold leaf, it may have resembled a contemporary representation of the god, appropriately found in a shipwreck, shown in the figure above. Poseidon was usually portrayed carrying a trident, the weapon he supposedly used to stir up storms. On the longest day of the year, the sun sets exactly in the middle of the caldera of the island of Patroklos, the extinct volcano that lies offshore, suggesting astrological significance for the siting of the temple. The temple of Poseidon was destroyed in 399 by Emperor Arcadius.
Archaeological excavation of the site in 1906 uncovered numerous artifacts and inscriptions, most notably a marble kouros statue known as the Sounion Kouros[12] and an impressive votive relief,[13] both now in the Athens National Archaeological Museum.[14] A column from the temple can be seen in the British Museum.
Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο, transliterated Akrotírio Soúnio, pronounced [akroˈtirʝo ˈsuɲo]; Ancient Greek: Ἄκρον Σούνιον, Άkron Soúnion; Venetian: Capo Colonne, Cape of Columns) is a promontory located 69 kilometres (43 mi) south-southeast of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece.
Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823).

Thomas & Vassiliki // Wedding in Cape Sounio
Wedding in Cape Sounio, Greece.
We first met Thomas and Vassiliki at MaYia’s wedding that we were glad to have covered back in 2016 at Naxos , the beautiful island of Kyklades. They knew the quality of our work and our philosophy on wedding videography, so in our first meeting for their own wedding, we had time to talk about how they met, the wedding proposal, the wedding plan and all the wedding details. Everything was carefully planned!
The wedding celebrations started a day before the ceremony with a beach party at Cape Sounio. Friends and family enjoyed the beautiful sea and the food and they relaxed playing games – they even played football! It was a successful pre-wedding party with tons of laughs and dancing until late at night and the perfect warming up for the big day, their wedding day!
If you have been to Cape Sounio even once, you know that it is a magical place! You get the feeling of being on a Greek island although you haven’t left Attica. The ancient Temple of Poseidon with its glory adds to this almost mystical atmosphere. Under this bright light, the wedding preparations started in two separate studios of the same hotel. In the one studio, Thomas friends shaved the groom according the tradition. The result, as usual, was shaving foam all over the groom and laughter. Friends and family were having fun like children, laughing and speaking loudly. At the same time, in a totally different mood at the other studio, Vassiliki was getting ready with some help from her beautiful girlfriends. She wore her wedding dress and everyone in the room got emotional.
A little church at Palaia Fokea dedicated to Panagia Katafygiotissa was an excellent choice for the wedding ceremony. Guests were holding white balloons to release during Vassiliki’s arrival. Thomas gave the signal “She’s here!” and immediately the sky was full of balloons, like the hearts of the couple was full of joy and happiness! These little movements and the lovely speech at the end of the wedding ceremony added to the strong emotions of the day.
The happy new weds had more surprises yet to come! A summer party was set up at the hotel’s garden under the summer moon and with the carefully chosen tunes by George Misirlis! The first surprise was for Thomas. Vassiliki dedicated him the song “Stand by me” that was performed live by her singer cousin. The second one was for Vasilliki. Thomas surprised her with a heartwarming speech that brought tears to the eyes. The final surprise was for the guests. Many colorful fireworks light up the summer sky, from the decks of George came the first notes of the song…. “ I got a feeling….that tonight is gonna be a good night…” and a crazy party was officially started!
It was more than a good night! It was a perfect minimal, summer wedding and unforgettable experience for all, the couple, the guest and for us, too.
It was hard to put all those sweet and fun moments in a 3 minute video. We are happy that we made it and we would love to share it with you so you can experience all those feelings through our eyes!
