Kappabashi (Kappa Bridge) over the Azusa River, Kamikochi, Japan
Just north of the Kamikochi Bus Terminal is Kappabashi (Kappa Bridge), a beautiful suspension bridge crossing over the Azusa River. Crossing the bridge gives you wonderful views of the turqoise waters of the river along with snowy mountain peaks. Many hotels, restaurants, and shops can be found in the area surrounding the bridge.

Kamikochi Kappa-bashi Bridge
Kappa-bashi Bridge is the busiest spot in Kamikochi, and sometimes feels like the famous Shibuya Crossing intersection.

Kamikochi:Kappa Bridge
Kappa Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Azusa River in the center of Kamikochi, not far from the bus terminal. Several hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops can be found around the bridge.
The structure of the bridge is wooden and it has become a distinctive symbol of Kamikochi. It inspired the 1927 novel, “Kappa,” by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, in which the narrator and protagonist journeys to Kamikochi only to stray into the mysterious land of the kappa, a quirky race of water spirits from Japanese folklore.
Kappa Bridge is especially popular as a photo spot with a terrific view of the Hotaka Peaks and Mt. Myojindake that can been seen when facing upriver. Looking downriver, one has a good view of Mt. Yakedake, the iconic peak at the entryway to Kamikochi whose smoking crater reminds us that it is a very active volcano. The area around the bridge is home to Kesho Yanagi (a local species of willow) and Japanese larch trees.

Kappabashi is a suspension bridge spanning Azusa River in the center of Kamikochi, not far from the bus terminal. There are several hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops around the bridge.
Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most magnificent mountain scenery. It is open from mid to late April until November 15 and shuts down in winter. In 2014, Kamikochi is open from April 18 to November 15.
Kamikochi is a about 15 kilometer long plateau in the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by tall mountains.
Part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi has only been moderately developed with six hotels, several souvenir shops, mountain huts and hiking trails. Private cars are not allowed to enter Kamikochi, and access is only possible by bus or taxi. In the center of Kamikochi, a short walk from the bus terminal, stands the Kappabashi (Kappa Bridge). From the Kappabashi, hiking trails lead up and down the valley and towards the summits of the surrounding mountains.
The simplest way to enjoy a day in Kamikochi is by hiking the trails along Azusa River from Taisho Pond to Myojin Bridge. It is a mostly flat area and no hiking experience is needed and it takes only a few hours of time. However, the climbs to the surrounding peaks, are more challenging and only recommended between mid June and mid September.

Kamikochi #2 Around Kappa-bridge
Kappa-bridge (Kappa-bashi) is the most famous spot in Kamikochi.
My recommend is the view from down stream of bridge, where you can see Azusagawa-river, kappa-bridge and Mt. Hotaka at once.
Each season you can enjoy the landscape. Snow will almost vanish in Augst.

Taisho-ike Pond Hike, Kamikochi
The wooden path connects Kamikochi Bus Terminal and Taisho-ike Pond, which was formed by a volcanic eruption in 1915. As I walked above the Azusa River, I also enjoyed the view of the beautiful mountains covered in morning mist.

The Dakesawa Wetlands, reached in a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Kappa Bridge along the hiking trail towards Myojin Pond, is one of the most scenic areas of Kamikochi.
