Chalcis, Evia: Karababa Castle
The site of the castle is said to be on the ancient town of Kanitho as traces of buildings and graves have been found on the surface of the ground. The hill was probably fortified for the first time during the Roman period but it is certain that it had no fortifications during the Byzantine period ,the Venetian occupation and the first centuries of the Turkish domination.
The fortress which exists today was built by the Turks in 1684 for the purpose of protecting Chalkida from the Venetians. It was designed by Beneto Gerolimo Galopo and its architecture is more European than Turkish. The fort was unsuccessfully besieged by Morozini in 1688 and the Turks were able to maintain their domination until the liberation of Greece.
The Karababa castle is situated on Viotias hill which is called Fourna. It is in a strategic position as it controls the Strait of Euripus and the city of Chalkida.
It is of Venetian style with an oblong enclosure, orientated east-west, with a rampart on the northern side, three bastions and a large tower. The southern part of the wall is in very bad condition. Ancient architectural structures have been built into some parts of the enclosure. The most complex hexagonal bastion can be found on the eastern side overlooking Chalkida. On the ramparts there are two Russian cannons, dating from the 19th century. The only column in the fortress can be found on the south-east side of the wall which is surrounded by buildings of a military nature. On the eastern wall of the enclosure, between the column and the eastern tower, there is a bell tower built where the emergency bell of the fortress existed. The only well-preserved building inside the enclosure is the Chapel of the Prophet Elijah which was built in 1895.At the end of the western wall there is a seven-sided tower the dignified defence building of the fortress. The entrance to the tower is from a narrow archway which looks like a labyrinth.

Ep.57 Midnight crossing of the Khalkis Bridge on the Evia Channel, Greece by boat - Carl and Jenny
In this episode we explore the Greek town of Khalkis located within the Evia channel. Jen goes for a tour around the ancient Karababa Castle overlooking the town and finds some Greek ancient artifacts dating back over a thousand years. We later pass through the famous Khalkis bridge at midnight in some strong currents whilst overlooked by hundreds of tourists in this nightly parade! To pass through the bridge you first have to register with the Port Police and Harbour master. Each boat is then called through in turn, but it does become a free for all once the first boat goes!

Thanos Mikroutsikos - The Knife - Live in Castle Karababa Chalkis 22 07 2011
Thanos Microutsikos : Piano-vocals
Thimios Papadopoulos:Sax - Bansuri (Indian Flute)
Poet: Nikos Kavadias
Lyrics in English:
The Knife
I always carry close under my belt
A small steel African knife,
Like one of those that niggers used to play with,
And that I bought from an old shop owner in Algiers.
I remember, a if it were now, the old merchant,
Who looked like an old oil painting by Goya,
As he stood next to long swords and tattered uniforms
Saying in a hoarse voice the following words:
This knife here that you want to buy
has connections with legend and strange stories;
everyone knows that each previous owner
murdered someone close to him.
With it Don Basilio killed his beautiful wife, Donna Julia,
because she was unfaithful.
Count Antonio, one night, the same to his poor brother
with this knife here.
A nigger killed his young lover out of jealousy
and some Italian sailor likewise to a Greek boatswain.
From hand to hand it passed into mine.
Many things my eyes have seen, but this one makes me shudder.
Come close and look at it, it has an anchor and a crest,
it's light, here hold it, it's not even a quarter pound,
but I advise you to buy something else.
-- How much? -- Only seven francs. You want it, take it.
A small dagger I keep tight under my belt,
that I made my own on a whim;
and because I hate no one in the world enough to kill,
I fear that some day I may turn it against myself ...

CHALKIDA GREECE
Chalkida the chief town of the island of Euboea in Greece, is situated on the strait of the Evripos at its narrowest point. The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek word chalkos (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area.

Evia, Greece - Chalkida - AtlasVisual
Evia Video Map:
Chalkida is the capital of Evia and is actually covers area both on the island and on the mainland. It is located on the west side of the island, facing the Euripus Strait, and connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is only about an hour away from Athens, so it's perfect for a day trip as well as holidays. There are many interesting sights in Chalkida – a Castle of Karababa built on a hill above the city, the Red House and watching the tide phenomenon from the Negroponte Bridge. The Strait of Euripus is prone to extremely strong currents that reverse direction four times a day (roughly every six hours). The city has accommodation of all varieties, as well as shopping, cafes, bars, restaurants. There are several excellent nearby beaches – Agios Minas and Asteria are worth it for a dip!
