Dungan Village Yrdyk and Family Dinner - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
The village of Yrdyk is approximately 10 km west of Karakol. Here lives the closed community of Dungans, the successors of the Muslim Chinese, in China described as Hui. Until recently, only Dungans who are married to Dungans are allowed to live in Yrdyk.
About 140 years ago, the Dungans were expelled from China and came in three groups to Kyrgyzstan. One of these groups settled in Yrdyk. The other two groups were largely assimilated by the local population. Approx 1000 people came to Yrdyk. Today, about 3000 inhabitants live here. They have kept their own culture, which is reflected in architecture, clothing and many other habits.
At the mosque, we meet Aman from Destination Karakol, with whom we already made the food tour in Karakol.
He gives us an overview of the history of the mosque. Originally it was designed by the same architect who built the Dungan Mosque in Karakol. The mosque in Yrdyk should be twice as big. During the construction phase, an insurrection of the Kyrgyz against the Russian Empire took place, and the Dungan also joined the uprising.
But the uprising was defeated and the unfinished mosque turned into a warehouse. Then it was burnt down by the Dungans. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kyrgyzstan, today's mosque was rebuilt 20 years ago. Only men have access.
The Dungan museum is only a few streets away. Here, Mr. Lyck Lee awaits us already. He even speaks a little German. Aman acts as an English interpreter.
The immigrant Dungans belong to two ethnic groups, the Ma and the Lee. Mr. Lee is 65 years old and, as the name suggests, a representative of the Lee ethnic group. He says that Bruce Lee is one of his relatives.
He tells the story of the Dungan which came as Arab warriors to China to support the emperor. To make them stay in China, they were married to Chinese women. Paintings and pictures show these couples. Dungans live according to Chinese tradition and customs but have Muslim faith.
150 years ago there was an uprising in China because of the restrictions on the living conditions for farmers. After a 15-year fight, the people had to escape over the Tien Shan Mountains in wintertime.

Amazing Secret Hot Springs | Kyrgyzstan Travel Vlog
Another new travel vlog from Kyrgyzstan with some hiking and an amazing secret hot springs.
Today is the end of my first 3 day trek here in Kyrgyzstan. I had such an amazing time on the hike, and the landscapes here are just unreal. But, by the end of my trip I was exhausted and all my batteries - physically and camera - needed charging. I was looking forward to getting home and having a shower.
But, my guide found me one better. He took me to these amazing secret hot springs. There's a pretty touristic hot springs near where we ended our trek in Arashan, but he knew of a secret one that he wanted to take me too. So, even though we were tired we decided to hike another couple kms to get to this spot he knew. And, man, was it ever worth it. It was the perfect way to end the trip. A secret hot springs along a river in one of the most beautiful gorges in the world. Kyrgyzstan just continues to blow my mind on a daily basis.
In the afternoon, we drove this crazy road back from Arashan to Karakol where I got the rest of the day off. Tomorrow I already start some more Hiking in Kyrgyzstan so I'm looking forward to getting a bit recharged and re-energized.
There's also an important note about hiking in Kyrgyzstan in this video. So, if you're interested in doing some trekking here, be sure to watch to the end.
There's another travel vlog from Kyrgyzstan tomorrow, so stay tuned!

In 1991, an important 1991 meeting between Boris Yeltsin and Askar Akayev took place in Jeti-Oguz resort, Sanatorium.
The Jeti-Ögüz Rocks is a geological protected area (nature monument) located in Jeti-Oguz District of Issyk-Kul Province of Kyrgyzstan. It was established in 1975 with a purpose of conservation of a unique geological formation - sheer cliffs composed of tertiary red conglomerates.[1] The name derives from the rock formation's resemblance to seven bulls and a legend about a khan's unfaithful wife. Another near-by formation is called the 'broken heart'. The rock formation is a well-known landmark in Kyrgyzstan and is seen as a national or regional symbol, and hence is the subject of paintings, songs, and even music videos. The surrounding area is known for its natural beauty. (Wikipedia)
Rafting in Kyrgystan
We went white water rafting on the Chu River, which forms the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in central Asia. The water is ice cold and an unusual color because it is glacial runoff from the Tien Shen mountains. The fun (and dangerous) part was the captain, who only spoke Russian!
Kyrgyzstan ski season opens early to delight of skiers
(1 Dec 2016) LEAD IN:
Winter season has opened a month earlier than usual at ski resorts in Kyrgyzstan.
This year snow covered the hills and pines of Karakol by the end of November.
Among the 23 ski resorts in the country, 18 are already fully functioning and receiving guests.
STORY-LINE:
Karakol - the biggest and the best of Kyrgyzstan's ski resorts with its beautiful natural surroundings and developed infrastructure.
In recent years the resort has become widely popular not only with the locals, but with foreigners too. Visitors are attracted by good runs, nice weather and a very modest price policy compared to popular European resorts.
There's a lot of space here, good weather, fresh air. What's most important is that there's plenty of ski resorts (to choose from in Kyrgyzstan) But what is even more important is that it's not expensive at all here, much cheaper (than in Europe), says visitor Chen Zhu Huan, from China.
In the Soviet times Karakol was used as a training base for winter sportsmen. But since a complete renovation in 2004 it has become a popular winter sports destination.
Kyrgyzstan in the recent years has become a popular destination not only for summer tourism, but for winter too. At the moment we see strong potential in developing winter sports in the country. Both investment and the number of tourists is increasing every year, says the Deputy Minister for Culture and Tourism of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Djamankulov.
We have 23 ski resorts and 18 of them are fully operating already. Of course Karakol is a leader and a most bright example (of how winter sports popularity Is prospering) Karakol is on the Forbes list of the best ski resorts, it has been included in many other ratings and I think in the future its potential will only be growing, he adds.
Mild temperatures are another reason Karakol has become so popular. In winter the temperature doesn't drop lower than -5C allowing visitors to enjoy skiing on good snow without freezing.
I came here because the snow in the winter in Kyrgyzstan is amazing. These mountains have been great to ski on. It's a lot like what we have back home: really good runs, really good weather, the guest houses in the winter here are spectacular. Yeah, the tourism here is just great especially in the winter. So come, it's been spectacular and fun, good place to go, says Bobby Surly, a tourist from the US.
The ski season in Kyrgyzstan lasts through until mid April.

Travel Guide to Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan.
Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited.
The country is primarily a mountainous land rising in altitude from 400 metres in the Ferghana Valley to over 7,400 metre on the summit of Peak Pobeda. More than half of the country is over 3,000 metres high, while a third is permanently covered in snow. But despite the immense natural beauty of this landlocked Central Asian, Silk Road republic, it is the people themselves that bring Kyrgyzstan to life, and on many of our tours to the country you will stay with local families with whom we have developed special friendships.
So to the country and the main sites you’ll see. Heading east out of the leafy, tree-lined streets of the capital Bishkek – a place renowned for its markets, monuments and excellent museum – you’ll first pass the imposing 11th century Borana Tower, before skirting the edge of Lake Izzy Kul. Here, in the far northeast of the country, you can spend a couple of days on the lake, visit the interesting town of Karakol or head to Karkara Mountain Camp for a bit of helicopter assisted glacier trekking, available every year on our Celestial Mountain Action Adventure.
From here you’ll probably move on around the southern shores of the lake, visiting one of the famous eagle hunters, and possibly trek over the one of the many magnificent passes, before hitting the main road south towards China, and one of the last remaining ancient Silk Road caravanserais at Tash Rabat. Here you can go for walks, or ride one of the local’s horses, all the while staying in one of the traditional yurts while Nazira and her family look after you. People often ask me, where is my favourite place in the world – well, this is right up there; sitting on the hills above the valley is one of the most peaceful settings I know.
From here most will either head over the border to China and the famous Silk Road crossroads town of Kashgar or west across the mountains to another jewel in the Kyrgyz crown, Lake Son Kul. A 3,000 metre high glacial lake, some 40 kilometres in length, again it offers a great place to walk or ride among the hills and meet more of the locals.
As you head further west so you can cross the sensational Ferghana range and visit the region around the Tajik border – particularly travelling up to Peak Lenin base camp – or head down into the Ferghana Valley and the ancient Silk Road town of Osh. Many of our trips come this way as they head into neighbouring Uzbekistan, but continuing on the circuit back round towards Bishkek and you come to yet another wonderful region of natural beauty, Sary Chelek National Park.
At Wild Frontiers we run both small group tours and tailor-made holidays to Kyrgyzstan. While some trips focus solely on this country, others take in Kyrgyzstan on longer journeys through this Silk Road region. It’s also the place that we run one of our best horse riding adventures; loosely following the route I took back in 1999, for those interested in equine holidays, this trip is simply sensational.
As you can see, as far as natural mountain beauty is concerned Kyrgyzstan is unrivalled in the region. It is a country with few political issues, a place with good tourist infrastructure and yet relatively few tourist. It’s a place where you can walk, ride, mountain bike, raft or heli-trek – with us, all on a single trip! – and as of 2012 there are no visa requirements for British and many other nationalities.
As I say when I rode through the country 15 years ago, I knew I had discovered a gem…and so it is today. Kyrgyzstan really is one of adventure travels best kept secrets.

The Pamir Mountains - the Roof of the World
The Pamirs is one of the world's highest mountain systems, located in the south of Central Asia. The Pamirs is located at the point where the greatest mountains of Asia meet: the Himalayas, Karakorum, Hindu Kush, Tien Shan, Gissar and Alai and Kunlun. A trip to the Pamirs is an opportunity to see with your own eyes the most famous mountain system. A distinctive feature of the tour is that it almost passes off-road between the mountain peaks. Pamir is one of the places on earth where you really feel on another planet. This is an amazing nature of the highlands, ancient history and beautiful people. The journey begins in Uzbekistan, passes through Tajikistan and ends in Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyzstan Yurt | UNBELIEVABLE how fast they can build a yurt
The yurt is an iconic symbol of the nomadic culture of Kyrgyzstan. As travellers we have always felt very inspired by nomads. Nomadic people on the silk road still live in yurts and every so often, they take their yurts apart and move to a new location where they build the yurt again. This allows them to make the most of the seasons in different locations and give their livestock new places to graze. We were lucky enough to join a local family and learn how a yurt can be built.
There are very few places where you can actually join a family doing this! It was awesome to be part of, especially as they are part of the world nomad games themselves! The world record for yurt building is even less than 10 minutes! I can barely believe it!
