The Karakoram Highway stretches from the ancient Silk Road oasis of Kashgar in China's Xinjiang region all the way to Abbottabad in Pakistan. The entire road is about 1300 kilometers and passes by some of the most beautiful scenery that this planet has to offer.
On the Chinese side of the Karakoram Highway, there are a number of great sights to see.
A couple hours outside of Kashgar, the first stop you'll run into is the White Sands Lake (白沙湖), an amazing contrast of what looks like desert meeting a gorgeous lake.
Further south, the amazing Karakul Lake (卡拉库里湖) sits at the base of the Muztaghata mountain, part of the Pamir mountain range. It was here that we stayed in a Kyrgyz yurt along the shore.
Rising in elevation, we cross the Subash pass (苏巴什) and ride through the Taheman Grasslands (塔合曼) before finally arriving at Tashkorgan (塔什库尔干). It's a journey that used to take 10-12 hours by bus but now takes only 5-6 hours thanks to new and improved highways.
If you're considering traveling along the Karakoram Highway, I hope that this video will push you to giving it a try. You won't regret it!

The N-35 or National Highway 35 (قومی شاہراہ 35), known more popularly as the Karakoram Highway ( شاہراہ قراقرم) and China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, is a 1300 km national highway in Pakistan which extends from Hasan Abdal in Punjab province of Pakistan to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China and becomes China National Highway 314. The highway connects the Pakistani provinces of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The highway is a popular tourist attraction, and is one of the highest paved roads in the world, passing through the Karakoram mountain range, at 36°51′00″N 75°25′40″E an elevation of 4,693 metres (15,397 ft). Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The highway is also a part of the Asian Highway AH4.

Karakoram Highway route map

The Karakoram Highway, also known as the Friendship Highway in China, was built by the governments of Pakistan and China. It was started in 1959 and was completed and opened to the public in 1979. About 810 Pakistanis and about 200 Chinese workers lost their lives, mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway. The Chinese workers who died during the construction are buried in the Chinese cemetery in Gilgit. The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road.
On the Pakistani side, the road was constructed by FWO (Frontier Works Organisation), employing the Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers. The Engineer-in-Chief's Branch of the Pakistani Army completed a project documenting the history of the highway. The book History of Karakoram Highway was written by Brigadier (Retired) Muhammad Mumtaz Khalid in two volumes. In the first volume the author discusses the land and the people, the pre-historic communication system in the Northern Areas, the need for an all-weather road link with Gilgit, and the construction of Indus Valley Road. The second volume records events leading to the conversion of the Indus Valley Road to the Karakoram Highway, the difficulties in its construction, and the role of Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers and their Chinese counterparts in its construction.

Karakoram Highway: The Border of China and Pakistan
The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved road on earth. This mountainous stretch of highway runs between western China and Pakistan, and it’s one of the very few routes that crosses through the Himalayas.
Our journey begins in Kashgar, a city in the far west of China’s XinJiang Province. From here, we’ll take a van as far as we can, all the way to the border of China and Pakistan. The natural scenery here is stunningly beautiful.
Our first stop is at White Sand Lake. Dry desert hills and a massive body of water contrast with each other, making this lake a stunning sight to behold. Here, a few Kyrgyz families live in small houses along the lake and peddle precious stones to the occasional visitor.
Only 30 kilometers further and we’ve reached Karakul Lake. Crystal clear water, snow-capped mountains and roaming camels are a part of everyday life here. Sitting at 12,000 feet above sea level, the scenery here is literally breathtaking. Even while resting, I find myself gasping for air.

China Kashgar Karakoram Highway 30 06 2012
Cycling Karakoram Highway , Tashkurgan to Kashi , Xinjiang
A very interesting bike touring trip in the forbidden Karakorum Highway . Every villages were welcoming us but putting up a night in their house is virtually forbidden, not even camping. China government has done a good job in making the path safe for foreigners like us whereby police is everywhere along the highway, villages and city like Tashkurgan and Kashi.
We were kind of frustrated when police stop us from entry into road 613 which is the most beautiful village in southern Xinjiang, 150km away from Pakistan border.
This short video clips is showing the downhill path of Subash Pass, Pamirs highland.

China Kashgar Karakoram Highway Part 1
China - Kashgar - The Karakoram Highway 30th June 2012
Along Karakoram Highway. Kashgar, XinJiang, China.
On our way to Karakul Lake on Karakoram Highway. The stop point is filled with sellers of random souvenirs hoping to make a sale for every traveler that comes through.
My friend Jason Carter turns the table around and tries to sell his watch. At the end, the local salesmen wanted to do a bartering trade: a camel statue to his sun glasses - which are worth $265.
I liked the clothing details in the local salesmen, and the contrast between Jason and the locals.

When I first visited Kashgar's Old City in 2008, the mud brick homes that had stood on that spot for centuries formed a labyrinth of alleyways that was fun to wander around.
Then, in 2009, the Chinese government deemed these homes unsafe and decided to tear them down and rebuild them completely, much to the horror of the international community.
They tore down everything except a small portion on the east side of the city.
Now, eight years later, I have decided to revisit this ancient Silk Road oasis and find out what has happened to this new Old City. Did they rebuild it well? How does it compare to the old Old City? What do the locals think?
Join me as I explore the back alleys of Kashgar's Old City, try a bit of Uyghur street food and even get a personal tour of an old Uighur home!

Karakoram Highway The southern route:
The Chinese Section of the Karakoram Highway follows the north-south Sarykol ('Yellow Lake') valley just west of the Tarim Basin, which is barely visible in the satellite image at left. The road from Kashgar goes southwest about 80 km and then turns west to enter the Gez (Ghez) River canyon between Chakragil mountain on the north and Kongur mountain on the south. From the Gez canyon the population becomes Kirgiz. Having climbed up to the valley, the road turns south past Kongur, Karakul Lake and Muztagh Ata on the east. Below Muztagh Ata a new road goes west over the Kulma Pass to join the Pamir Highway in Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan. The main road continues over a low pass (where the population becomes Tajik) and descends to Tashkurgan. Further south a valley and jeep track leads west towards the Wakhjir Pass to the Wakhan Corridor. Next the road turns west to a checkpost and small settlement at Pirali, and then the Khunjerab Pass, beyond which is Pakistan, the Khunjerab River and Hunza.
The southern route was mainly a single route running from China, through the Karakoram, where it persists to modern times as the international paved road connecting Pakistan and China as the Karakoram Highway. It then set off westwards, but with southward spurs enabling the journey to be completed by sea from various points. Crossing the high mountains, it passed through northern Pakistan, over the Hindu Kush mountains, and into Afghanistan, rejoining the northern route near Merv. Kaynak:Vikipedia

Xinjiang to Tibet highway is the highest highway in the world, some section more than 5400m elevation, also one of the most dry and desolated highway. When PLA built this highway in 1950s,more than one people died in each kilometer, but becouse it's extremely difficult terrain and elevation, this way have to close in winter some year,so now Chinese armed police engineering corps start reform it to become high grade highway.
