Ibex in Hunza Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan
Himalayan Ibex (Capra ibex sibirica) is symbol of arid and rocky mountain of Karakoram, Hindukush and Himalayas of Gilgit-Baltistan. The males have heavy body, large horns, long bears and females are small body small horns. Its presence in its natural habitat is essential to maintain healthy ecosystem.
Ibex is confined to the relatively arid mountain ranges of the inner-Himalayas, living well above the tree line only in the higher more precipitous regions. They live from about 3,660m to over 5,000m in Pakistan, but are sometimes seen crossing valleys below 2,135m. The Himalayan Ibex is widespread in the higher mountain ranges of Hunza, Chitral, Ghizer and Baltistan Karakoram Range, the Haramosh Range and the Deosai. Khunjerab National Park, Gilgit, Yasin and Hunza. Wegge (1998), who surveyed the Khunjerab National Park for IUCN, estimated the total population of ibex within the area to be more than 2,000 animals, which works out at about one animal per sq. km. Himalayan Ibex are also found in Northern Chitral.
Small populations are also found in Chilas and the slopes of Malika Parbat in Hazara. Some are also found in Azad Kashmir. Baltistan and Hunza are undoubtedly the strongholds of the Himalayan Ibex in the region today. The survival of the Himalayan Ibex is not so threatened in Pakistan largely due to the inaccessibility of its habit provided by the very extensive concentration of high mountain ranges where it lives

History.
Karakoram Highway route map
Summits of Karakoram Mountain Range as seen from the Karakoram Highway near Nagar, Gilgit.
The Karakoram Highway, also known as the Friendship Highway in China, was built by the governments of Pakistan and China. It was started in 1959 and was completed and opened to the public in 1979. About 810 Pakistanis and about 200 Chinese workers lost their lives, mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway. The Chinese workers who died during the construction are buried in the Chinese cemetery in Gilgit. The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road.
On the Pakistani side, the road was constructed by FWO (Frontier Works Organisation), employing the Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers. The Engineer-in-Chief's Branch of the Pakistani Army completed a project documenting the history of the highway. The book History of Karakoram Highway was written by Brigadier (Retired) Muhammad Mumtaz Khalid in two volumes. In the first volume the author discusses the land and the people, the pre-historic communication system in the Northern Areas, the need for an all-weather road link with Gilgit, and the construction of Indus Valley Road. The second volume records events leading to the conversion of the Indus Valley Road to the Karakoram Highway, the difficulties in its construction, and the role of Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers and their Chinese counterparts in its construction.
