Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, Paeroa :: Long White Gypsy
What better way to spend a winter long weekend than hiking the beautiful Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.
This track starts from the Karangahake Domain Car Park on State Highway 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. It is approximately 60km from Hamilton, and 130km from Auckland.
The track is shared use (as most of New Zealand's tracks are), meaning that you will most likely encounter mountain bikes on the way. This is not too much of an issue, as for most of the way the track is a wide gravel road giving plenty of space for mountain bikers and hikers to travel easily abreast of each other.
You have a choice of tracks to take on this hike. The main route is 4.3km return to Waikino where the train to Waihi departs from. The DOC website states this is a 4hr return trip, but most hikers will be able to complete this within 3 1/2 to 3 1/4 hours.
Along this track you will come across the Victoria Battery complex. Begun in 1896, Victoria Battery was a quartz crushing plant for gold extraction in Australasia, capable of crushing over 812 tonnes or ore each day to the consistence of sand. The cyanide process was used for extracting the gold from the ore by converting it to a water soluble complex.
The second option is to take the Rail Tunnel Loop, a distance of 2.5km (or 20-45 min duration) from the carpark. The main feature of the loop track is the 1.1km rail tunnel (well lit) which leads from the end of the Western Portal Bridge to the Eastern Portal Bridge over the Ohinemuri River. We incorporated the rail tunnel into our hike of the Historic Walkway track, for a grand total of 4hr 30min (including a 20minute rest break in Waikino)
Dogs are permitted on the track, but on a leash only.
The track is easy walking, for all ages and levels, being flat all the way (due to walking along the base of the gorge).
**Optional Side-Trail :: Whereas Owharoa Falls is probably the biggest waterfall tourist attraction along this route, it is well worth taking the 5-10 minute side trail to the Karangahake Waterfall, which you'll find about 10-15 minutes along the track after the junction with Eastern Portal Bridge.

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, New Zealand
Visited the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway in New Zealand. It's about an hour's drive south of Auckland. The townships of Karangahake, Owharoa, and Waikino used to be mining centers in the early 1900s. Today, you will find relics along the 7-kilomter (just under 5 miles) walkway: old railroad tracks, mining tunnels, bridges, an old battery, and even waterfalls! It makes for a beautiful hike or run.
Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway || New Zealand ||
This walkway features historic railway remains in a stunning natural gorge setting, including two steel truss bridges and a 1km rail tunnel, and provide access to the relics of historic gold mining. The walkway follows the railway line through the gorge and then opens out alongside the Ohinemuri River.

KARANGAHAKE HISTORIC WALKWAY /// VLOG #92
We loved our vacation, but missed New Zealand so much! So after coming back, we decided to do some hiking and explore some new beautiful places of this country. We went to Karangahake Gorge - that gorgeous place you all must have seen , if you've travelled to Auckland or the Coromandel at least once. They have a Historic Walkway there. It is about 7 km long, but can be divided into several parts. We did the famous Windows Walk, where you have to walk through the tunnel with a torch) and too the Railway Tunnel Loop with the well-known 1,1 km long tunnel after. It was amazing!

There is a newer version of this video available with better footage of the mining tunnels
We have visited the gorge a number of times now, we've seen it calm, we've seen it rough, we've seen it dry and we've seen it wet, but besides all the dramatic views, there is one special event that will always stay with me, at first I thought we have done something wrong but then...
Karangahake Gorge lies between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges, State Highway 2, the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty passes through this gorge, you'le find it just a few kilometers after the town of Paeroa, home of L&P, arguably New Zealand's favourite beverage.
Voted as one of the 101 Must Do's for Kiwis, the Windows Walk is a loop walk that leads through the old gold mining tunnels and I do recommended a flash light to navagate through them, the ‘windows’ of the walk are four open holes which look down on the spectacular river gorge far below, these were once used to tip tailings into the Waitawheta Gorge below. The path follows the route of a bush tramway and many ruins and old mining equipment can be seen with sections that looks like a scenes out of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider. It's a very easy walk which includes 3 suspension bridges which can be aquard walking accross and keeping your balance... The loop takes you through a 1,100m old railway tunnel which is is fairly well lit.

Karangahake Gorge between Paeroa and Waihi on SH, North Island New Zealand
Karangahake Gorge between Paeroa and Waihi on SH2.
The area is rich in gold mining history and natural beauty. It's best to plan a day out in this region, many walking tracks around.
Karangahake Gorge Suspension bridges, Waihi.
Approximately 2 years ago, a fellow multirotor pilot and I came to this historic place to plan where we could launch our camera platforms from, alas, my friend had to move on so I finally decided to return and finish what we both set out to do, this video is dedicated to him and to that day.
Day trips from Auckland - Karangahake Gorge
Karangaheke gorge is located at the base of the Coromandel Pensinsula, about a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland. There are plenty of great walks in the area, but from my point of view the Windows walk is the very best. From here you get framed views into the mining sites and the sparkling river below. There are even some glowworms, so keep an eye out for them. You can observe the relics of the many processes that took place in extracting gold - from the tunnels where rock was extracted, to the roasting pits where the rock was broken down, and the huge stamper battery processing plant. The Talisman battery, built in the 1890s was huge in its day, with 50 stampers crushing rock.
Another popular option is the historic walkway. It follows the historic Paeroa to Waihi railway.
In the stunning natural gorge setting many old mine buildings and machinery can be seen. Where the gorge opens up you will find the huge Victoria Battery. It was erected in 1897 to crush quartz and was considered the largest and most advanced facility of its type in New Zealand. To continue the loop you will get a chance to walk through the 1 km long tunnel that was once used for mining processes. Upon finishing this walk you will pass the Crown Battery site, which was constructed in 1892 and accommodates 60 stampers for crushing quartz
There are many more walking and mountain biking tracks, but if you are short in time these are my recommendations.
Best place to stay when you visit Auckland:
