EGYPT - Traveling in the Fayum from Karanis to Tebtunis
On the road in Egypt's Fayum region, a low-lying depression south of Cairo and west of the Nile river valley. This footage was recorded on June 8, 2012. This video shows a bit of the road between the sites of Karanis and Tebtunis. To save time, the guide and driver decided to avoid the main highway and utilize country roads running along the many canals. We did a lot of stopping and asking the locals for directions.

Greco-Roman City of Dionysias and Karanis, Egypt
Ruins, ruins and more ruins throughout Egypt. A person has to be really into Egyptology to appreciate the minutiae of what they are seeing when confronted with fragments of history. Unfortunately, Steve and I don't belong in that class of tourist! Dionysias dates back to the 3rd Century A.D. and sat in a big square of barren dessert, with Fayoum Oasis visible along its perimeter.
From there to a weekly animal market filled not only with animals but very friendly Egyptians (today's highlight, I must admit), ending at another ruined city, Karanis. Karanis too was rather underwhelming.

Kom Oshim (Karanis):
Kom Oshim, known also as Kom Aushim, is located to the north of Qaroun Lake, 70 KM away from Cairo, 33 KM away from El Fayoum Oasis, it was built by the Ptolemies in the 3rd century BC, it was an agriculture city in the time of the Greco-Roman.
Karanis museum:
This museum is very close to the city, it contains a huge collection that were found in the city such as glassware, potteries, jewelries and ornaments, it also includes two of the famous Fayoum portraits which were painted on wood to cover the face of the mummy, this was happening in the times of the Greco Roman as ancient Egyptians believed in the life after death (resurrection), the faces in the portraits are always serious and have staring eyes, and they also were wearing their finest clothes and jewellery, the best collection of the portraits came from Karanis, Philadelphia, and Hawara.
The museum has recently been renovated, and it is now the home of many artifacts.
Karanis:
Karanis is the ancient name for Kom Oshim, it is the largest Greco-Roman town in El Fayoum, this city went through many changes and it was totally occupied for about seven centuries.
In 1925, archeologists decided that this site needs to be excavated, under the supervision of the University of Michigan, after that they found out that this site has a very priceless information about everything.
After that Cairo University proceeded with the excavation work, then more recently by the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology.
The southern Temple:
Karanis is located on a huge mound, 12 meters above the surrounded plain, this town was constructed around two main temples of the Ptolemaic time, the temple in the south side was built in the 1st century AD, and it is the largest, dedicated to God Sobek, (the Crocodile God), this temple is founded by limestone, and yet it is not decorated, it contains three chambers, many mummified crocodiles have been found at Karanis, there is also a low hidden chamber which was probably used by the priests to deliver oracles.
The northern temple:
It dates back to the end of the 1st century, it has two small entrance pylons, and it has no inscriptions at all.

The Ancient City of Medinet Madi, Egypt
Medinet Madi is just one of the many ancient cities remaining in Egypt that tourists don't have time to visit. However, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Fayoum area.
The temple remains are fairly well preserved due to its isolated location and is one of the few surviving monuments of the Middle Kingdom. Worn reliefs of pharaohs Amenenhet II and Amenemhet IVV offer to deities in the shrimes.
A beautiful site and worth your effort if you have the time to visit.
