Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre
Karawatha Forest is located 18 kilometres south of Brisbane's CBD. A great day outdoors and indoors at Karawatha Forest Park
The Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre is Brisbane's newest environmental education centre. The centre aims to educate visitors about local ecosystems, important habitats, and the significant contribution Karawatha Forest plays in maintaining biodiversity. There is something here for all ages and all interests. It's interactive, informative and fun as everything is designed to encourage active participation.
Learn about the local frog populations as soon as you step inside the Discovery Centre. The interactive frog habitat floor projection responds to your movements, leaving ripples across the water's surface and scattering frogs across the pond as visitors walk through.
When you're ready to experience the great outdoors there is plenty to explore in Karawatha Forest Park. Just outside the doors of the Discovery Centre is the Karawatha Nature Play Space where kids are encouraged to run, balance, traverse and climb amongst play structures which are nature-based. The large green space picnic lawn and picnic areas with tables, shelters and free barbecues are a great place to stop for a relaxing bite to eat. For the more active types there are numerous walking tracks throughout Karawatha Forest.

Karawatha Forest Park is located 18 kilometres south of Brisbane's CBD adjoining Compton Road at Karawatha and Kuraby. The forest is approximately 900 hectares in size and is one of the largest areas of remnant bushland within the city.
One of the most successful wildlife movement solutions in Brisbane is the land-bridge linking Karawatha Forest on the southern side of Compton Road to bushland on the northern side of Compton Road.
Visitors to Karawatha Forest Park can enjoy birdwatching, bushwalking and using the picnic and barbecue facilities. You can also visit the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre and nature playground.
Walking track information and track map
Karawatha Forest Park has a range of walking tracks and trails. Download the Karawatha Forest Park track map (PDF - 1.49Mb) to see a map of the wetlands, track locations, grading and length of the tracks.
Alternatively, you can download the accessible version of the Karawatha Forest Park track information (Word - 94kb).

Karawatha
Karawatha Forest, on the southern outskirts of Brisbane, Australia, is a wildlife preserve of national significance, home to more than 320 native plant species and a refuge for some 200 species of wildlife.
But just a generation ago it was earmarked for urban development following a century of exploitation of its natural resources.
This is the story of how concerned local residents and Brisbane City Council with the support of Griffith University saved, protected and preserved Karawatha Forest.

The Forbidden Zone - Trailrunning Karawatha Forest
Karawatha Forest, Brisbane, Queensland - Aboriginal word meaning place of pine trees..... although hardly any pines here. Go figure.
This is one of my favourite nearby haunts for trailrunning and biking with so many varying routes to choose from. Beautiful, serene and majestic.... except for when I run across some dude relieving himself on the trail I'm running. Seriously? Just step 5 metres off the main trail and go behind a tree, mate.
On this route I start from The Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre on Acacia Rd at Logan City. I visit some of my favourite spots here like The Rocky Lookout, The Water Prison (aka Reservoir), The Forbidden Quarry Dam, and finally Poets Rock. A great little circuit almost 14kms.
Get out there and explore this big amazing world God has given us, and share the adventure. Enjoy the video.
By the way, if you're into hiking videos, check out my YouTube channel containing videos of some of my hiking expeditions around South East Queensland, Australia. Hope they inspire you to get out and explore this amazing place... ???? LINK HERE:
And if you've read this blurb this far, you may as well subscribe to my channel. What have you got to lose?... (except your valuable time watching YouTube videos). Thanks!

Uriah and Me went on the walk to locate Poets Rock. Unfortunately we returned with no poem. But we had a great time!
Karawatha Forest Pest Species Eradication Program
The Brisbane City Council have implemented a very effective program for the control of pest species within its flagship conservation reserve, Karawatha Forest, in the Brisbane suburb of Karawatha.
They have utilised an Eye in the Sky drone coupled with a fixed motion sensor camera on the ground in a known hot spot.
This has resulted in the almost complete eradication of one pest species from the forest.

Karawatha - She Oak Run
Exploring a 'single track' in Karawatha that has tunnel-like sections of dense small She Oak trees. This section runs for 1.65 km from the junction of Casuarina & Maculata Trails in a southerly, then south-easterly direction to join the Hakea Trail.
