The beauty of West Coast - black sand and surf beach is just around 50km west of Auckland. The waterfall is around 10min easy walk and during summer this will be a popular spots for swimmers and family.

Karekare Falls is located in the western part of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, near Karekare village - the filming location for The Piano. Beautiful scenery and easy access make this waterfall one of New Zealand Must See Waterfalls.
Karekare is accessed by turning off Piha Road onto Karekare Road or Lone Kauri Road. A large car park by the beach fills up quickly at weekends (accessible toilets here). From the Karekare car park, head south along the road until it climbs for a few minutes. Watch for the La Trobe Track signpost at the view of Karekare Falls.
The track leads easily down to a bridge over the extravagantly named Opal Pool Stream to a picnic area at the base of the falls. There are tables here under pohutukawa boughs.
Karekare Falls is a a very attractive waterfall with the deep pool at its base. Karekare Falls is located near Karekare village about 45 min drive from Auckland.
Easy 5-10 min walk from the car park. In Summer it makes great spot for swimming and chilling, but often becomes very crowdy. If you not affraid a bit of climbing then hike an extra 15-20 min up and explore some smaller pools above the fall.

We have been planning to go to Karekare beach for this summer holiday. Karekare beach is famous because of the movie The Piano made in 1993. It has this iconic scene where the piano sits on the beach. The movie got 3 academy awards and was well-praised.
Today we decided to go there but it was raining. So we decided to stop by Arataki Center to stay there and film for a while. After the Arataki Visit, we headed to KareKare beach.
Luckily when we got there the rain stopped. So we decided first thing first to head off to KareKare falls. It only took a little while to get there and the scenery was amazing. But because it was raining in the morning. practically no one came so it was very quiet and peaceful. And then we went to Kare Kare beach and walked along the KareKare stream..

KAREKARE Falls is one of the waterfalls in the Waitakere range. It would take you an hour drive from the city. A beautiful waterfall which is just 5 - 10minute of walk away from the car park.

BEAUTIFUL beach in Auckland! You must visit Karekare!
Auckland has so many great beaches to visit all within an hour away. We decided to hit one of our personal faves, Karekare beach. A black sand beach roughly 45mins drive away on the west coast of Auckland out in the Waitakere Ranges. It's a bit quieter than the other west coast beaches but it is equally as impressive! We also took a short 5min walk from the carpark to Karekare falls which is definitely worth a visit. To end the day we head up Mount Victoria in Devonport to catch a spectacular sunset over the city. A great spot to see the city light up once the sun goes down. To finish off we made a stop at one of Aucklands Night Markets, Pakuranga Night Market situated in the Warehouse Carpark on Saturday nights.
