Trip to karen village near mae Hong son Thailand (2019)
???????? Huay Pu Keng Long Neck Tribe Village, Mae Hong Son
Huay Pu Keng is a fairly well known “Kayan” Long Neck village in Mae Hong Son province. It is located at the Thai-Burmese border and it is considered to be the oldest Long-neck Karen village in Thailand since the tribal people moved from Burma many decades ago. In the village, visitors are able to experience unique lifestyle as well as talk to and take pictures with local residents. Moreover, visitors are able to buy souvenirs such as necklaces, clothes, and bags. The only way to reach the village is by taking a boat ride across scenic Pai River.

Karen Hilltribe Village, Mae Hong Son Province THAILAND
If you have visited Bangkok you might be surprised what life is like in northern Thailand. You could make a hat from a leaf, stuff your pillow with a fibre produced by a kapok tree, make your own clothes, build your own house made of bamboo and palm leaves and have a frog or a bird for lunch.. All of this would cost you nothing. You might ask, Why would anyone want to live this way? Well, many hill tribe people in northern Thailand have little or no income. Fancy joining me for a walk in Karen village in Mae Hong Son Province?
The majority of the Karens live in Burma but they are also the largest of the major tribes of northern Thailand. There are currently 280,000 Karen people living in Thailand. They can be found living in the mountains as well as on the plains, mostly in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, but also in central Thailand. They live in bamboo houses raised on stilts, beneath which live their domestic animals, pigs, chickens and buffalos. The mountain-dwelling Karens practise swidden agriculture, and the plains-dwellers, for the most part, cultivate irrigated paddy fields.
Karen women are noted for their skill in weaving, which is done on a back-strap loom. Each of the many sections of this large ethnic group has its own style of dress. Karen men produce musical instruments, animal bells, unique tobacco pipes and numerous other crafted items.
Karens are originally animist, but about 25% of Karens living in Thailand have been converted to Christianity by western missionaries.

Traditional way of Pounding rice - Karen hilltribe village - Mae Hong Son, Thailand
This wooden lever mechanism is the traditional method used for pounding rice to take off the hard outer shell. After this it will need to be sifted in bamboo pans, to take away the inner and thinner part of the husk. This is just one of the many steps needed to prepare rice, so that it is ready to be cooked. Nowadays, instead of this wooden mechanism the entire process is done by machine.

MUST DO IN CHIANG MAI - Authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe
A must do in Chiang Mai is this 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour. Unlike other things to do in Chiang Mai, this is well off the tourist radar. Watch us explore native Thai villages, cook, and eat exotic Thai food with the locals of Northern Thailand.
Many tour companies in Chiang Mai offer a “hill tribe tour”, only to take you to a contrived Thai village that only exists to serve tourists. What Thailand Hilltribe Holidays does, is offer you a 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour without any other tourists with you. We were taken to two villages: the Karen Hill Tribe and Hmong Hill Tribe.
* Book this tour with Thailand Hilltribe Holidays:
First was the Karen Hill Tribe in Northern Thailand where we were able to meet a village family and cook with them. Being able to cook with a hill tribe family was one of the most unique experiences in Thailand we have had in all 4 months here! The main dishes were sticky rice cooked inside of bamboo and a mix of curries, however we were able to try some exotic Thai food when they served frog soup! Watch and see how Ryan got tricked into eating this… haha!
The next stop on our Hill Tribe Village tour was the Hmong Hill Tribe village, also located in Northern Thailand inside of Doi Suthep National Park. The Hmong village was more advanced than the Karen, and quite resembled a traditional Thai village you might have seen a decade ago. Since so many people travel Thailand each year, it’s becoming more difficult to find the “local Thailand” visitors crave to see. We can guarantee you by taking this tour, you will have a one of a kind, unforgettable experience.
* Want to learn more about this authentic Thailand Hill Tribe tour? Read our blog here:
If you’re wondering what to do in Chiang Mai but don’t want to hit up the popular tourist spots, then this authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour is for you. It took us a lot of research to find this experience, since it’s not on any of the Chiang Mai to do lists you find online. We hope by watching this video you were able to get an inside look into life for a local Thailand hill tribe and are inspired to take a hill tribe tour yourself!
If you have any questions about this must do in Chiang Mai, how to travel Thailand, or the best things to do in Chiang Mai, feel free to leave a comment down below. We also have a huge list of Thailand travel vlogs you can watch to help plan your trip to Northern Thailand, Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, or Chiang Mai.
* We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. We hope you enjoy our travel vlog, don’t forget to subscribe!

Black Lahu Hilltribe Village, Mae Hong Son Province, THAILAND
Black Lahu Village I have visited back in April last year is probably the poorest village I've ever been to in Asia. Before entering we were told to buy some sweets and drinks as kids would be lined up at the entrance waiting to be given something. Lahu people who originated in south-west China can be found in the mountains of China, Myanmar, Laos and northern Thailand. There are approximately 25,000 Lahus now living in Thailand and four tribes within the Lahu: Black, Red, Yellow and She-Leh. Lahu villages are mostly at high altitude in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son.
Their houses are built on high stilts with walls of bamboo or wooden planks, thatched with grass. A ladder leads to the open central living area, with a storeroom to one side and living quarters to the other. Their domestic animals like chicken, pigs and buffalos are kept in the basement corral. Their practice of slash and burn agriculture does not provide them with even the basic essentials of life, let alone the enrichment to be found in education for their children, adequate medical care, and the simple amenities of modern life.
