KARLA CAVES LONAVALA MAHARASHTRA INDIA
Situated on the Pune-Mumbai Road, Karla Caves are approximately 40 km away from the city of Pune. These caves date back to the 2nd century BC and represent the golden period of Buddhism in India. The major attractions of the Karla Caves consist of the Chaitya Hall, beautifully chiseled sculptures and pillars adorned with incredible architecture. The magnificent structural design of the Chaitya Hall makes it a must see. Even the rooftop, made up of teakwood, has been exquisitely carved.
One of the pillars of the Karla caves has four lions at the top. This design has been adopted as the national emblem of India. There are a number of rock-cut sculptures inside the caves, displaying animals as well as various forms of human life. There is also a stone stupa, placed under an umbrella and carved with figures of men, women and elephants. The 37 pillars chiseled with the figures of prosperous men and women on elephants, bowing before Lord Buddha, add to the attraction of Karla caves.
The Karla cave complex comprises of a number of chaityas i.e., prayer halls, which have been carved with great precision. Then, there are also a number of viharas, dwelling places for the monks, which have been similarly ornamented. All these chaityas and viharas date back to the time of the Hinayana Buddhists and have arched entrances and vaulted interiors. There are no images of Lord Buddha in the caves, only symbolical descriptions. The portico of Karla caves is carved in such a way so as to give it an appearance of finished wood and has a large horseshoe arch as the central motif.

In this 6th episode of Maharashtra melodies, we are covering must-visit places around Lonavala. We started from the Lonavala town towards Karla caves. Right after joining Karla caves road you are asked entry fees. Small ghat road to reach Karla caves parking is in bad condition and is often flooded by the pilgrims to visit Ekveera temple situated right next to Karla caves. From Parking it around 500 meters ascend or trek to reach Karla caves. walkway to reach Karla caves/ Ekveera temple is flocked by the small shops of sweets, eatables and pooja items. You need to collect an entry ticket at the counter to enter Karla caves which are 25 Rs/person. To visit just Ekveera temple this is not required. Karla cave complex is a group of 16 caves dating back to the 2nd century BC to 7th century AD. Cave No.8, also called the Great Chaitya cave is the only Chaitya(Prayer hall) among 16 caves This is the largest rock-cut Chaitya in India, measuring 45 m (148 ft) long and up to 14 m (46 ft) high. Lonavala gets its name from Lenavali referring to a series (avali) of resting places in stone(len). By the time we returned, the road to Karla caves/ Ekveera temple got jam-packed And as always, G maps showed us some random adventurous route to reach Bhaja caves. Bhaja Caves or Bhaje caves is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century. One of the caves also houses a group of 14 stupas which are relics of resident monks, who died at Bhaja. Karla caves, lonavala
Karla Caves or Karle Caves or Karla Cells are caves located in Karil near Lonavala, Maharashtra. These were developed between 2nd century BC to 5th Century AD.
Sculptures in cave 1 are really beautiful. If you are interested to understand ancient Buddhist architecture and culture. Karla Caves are the largest cave temple (chaitya) in Indi. The Chaitya hall is amazing with 37 octagonal pillars with a base structure of a water jar and it façade screen made out of teak wood.
Adjust to caves is Ekvira Devi Temple.
If you are in Mumbai or Pune it is one of the kind place to visit. Specially for those who love to see caves and old time culture and artwork. It's around 60 KM from pune, that is almost 1 hr drive & around 95 Km from Mumbai, around 1.50 Hrs Drive from Mumbai - Pune Express way.
If you are travelling by car, you can either take your car up near to the top parking area. But the problem is the last hill patch to reach to the parking slot is very narrow and not advisable to drive if you are not an experience driver. Parking place is very small so you can avoid taking car on top parking area and parking your vehicle below and walking to the top. This way you will have to walk may be around 20-25 min. extra.

Welcome to our channel Nsquare Riders. Today's video is of Ekvira Aai Temple and Karla Caves. It is just 10.9 Kilometers away from Lonavala.
The Ekvira Aai Mandir is a Hindu temple located near the Karla Caves near Lonavala in Maharashtra, India. Here, the worship of the goddess Ekvira is carried on right next to the caves, once a center of Buddhism. The temple is a prime spot of worship for the Aagri-Koli People. But along with the Koli (fisherman) folk, Ekvira is worshipped by many some high caste, people especially those belonging to the CKP & Daivadnya Brahmins & somewhat kunbi caste as their presiding family deity, Kuldaivat. This temple-complex originally consisted of three alike shrines built in a row all facing west. Of these, the central and the southern shrines are preserved in full and rest of the structures are preserved only on plan and that too brought to light in the clearance work.
The devotees throng the temple on all occasions of Navaratri and Chaitri Navratra to worship and celebrate. Animal sacrifices are also offered in this temple, including the sacrifice of goat / chickens. It is believed that the Goddess has majestic powers.

Information :
Karla Caves /Karle Caves/Karla Cells are a complex of ancient Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines located in Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The shrines were developed over the period – from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC, having arisen near a major ancient trade route, running eastward from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan. Karli's location in Maharashtra places it in a region that marks the division between North India and South India. Buddhists, having become identified with commerce and manufacturing through their early association with traders, tended to locate their monastic establishments in natural geographic formations close to major trade routes so as to provide lodging houses for travelling traders. Now the cave complex is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
Architecture of Karla caves :
The caves are believed to be some of thousands of similar caves excavated in the Sahyadri Hills in the early 1st millennium AD.
The main cave features a large, intricately carved chaitya, or prayer hall, dating back to the 1st century BC. This is among the largest rock-cut chaityas in India, measuring 45 metres (148 ft) long and up to 14 metres (46 ft) high. The hall features sculptures of both males and females, as well as animals such as lions and elephants.
Within the complex are a great many other carved chaityas, as well as viharas, or dwelling places for the caves' monks. A notable feature of these caves is their arched entrances and vaulted interiors. The outside facade has intricate details carved into it in an imitation of finished wood. The central motif is a large horseshoe arch. There is an Ashokan pillar at the front, with a closed stone facade and torana in between.
