Campfire On The Karoo (1936)
Item title reads - Pathetone now has pleasure in presenting Josef Marais and his African Bushveld Boys in Camp Fire on the Karoo. (Millions heard it on the air - here it is on the screen).
L/S of mountains in the mist. M/S of Josef Marais and his African Bushveld Boys sat down around a campfire, this is probably in Pathe studios, some are smoking pipes. M/S as one lights a pipe then puts it down and starts playing the violin.
Various shots as they play clarinet, guitar and accordion. Josef sings When the Jackal Keeps a Howling. Others sit around and smoke, they say they are going to turn in. They sing Sarie Marias before they go. Brief shot of cart riding along. M/S of the band again. M/S of cattle and truck driving down a road. M/S of them singing again.
End Titles.

MIXED STOCK FARM FOR SALE NEAR PEARSTON IN THE EASTERN CAPE
3383 HA farm nestled at the foot of the towering Swartberg Mountain range incorporating a very pleasing blend of Karoo flats, deep, wooded drainage lines, undulating foothills and a significant chunk of the mountain itself. There are even a wealth of bushman paintings - You could spend a lifetime walking and still unearth new finds. The bulk of the basin floor is classic Karoo. The River margins and drainage lines have a good density of acacia Karoo and Karee, both of which provide excellent cover and browse. The grass cover here is considerably more significant, with a variety of species including Pannicum Maxima, Cenchrus, Eragrostis Curvula and being found in pleasing quantities.
The Main House is your typical old farm house, but it has been retro fitted with modern bathrooms, built in cupboards etc. It currently has 4 bedrooms (MES) with an extra, large bathroom. In addition there is an office, kitchen with separate pantry and scullery, large dining room and separate lounge area, large stoep with semi enclosed outdoor braai / entertainment area. The garden, as mentioned is an absolute showpiece. The second house has been beautifully restored. It is also 4 bedrooms with one enormous bathroom, separate kitchen, lounge and dining room with a beautiful entertainment room with built in braai. Both houses are very neat and homely.
The farm has the usual compliment of outbuildings, such as a fully enclosed shed of approx 35 x 12. There are 7 staff houses. The farm is currently fenced into 21 camps for small stock as well as a split (0-2months and then 2 months to adult) ostrich setup designed to carry about 1650 birds per annum. Both facilities have export certification. In addition to the ostriches, the property carries 2000head of small stock and about 20 beefmasters.
While currently operated as a mixed stock farm, it would make a truly spectacular game farm.

Steam train trip to Ladismith, South Africa, in February 1980
This is footage I took of a trip on the Touwsriver-Ladismith railway line in February 1980. The line, which was still steam-hauled, was destroyed in a 100-year flood a year later. Since it left Touwsriver at ~2am, I only got coverage on the Ladismith end of the line.
The locomotive was Class 24 #3622.
Bear in mind it was taken with a Super 8 camera, so lots of herky-jerkies. Oh to have had my HDV camcorder back then!
I took two other trips to Ladismith, which I will also post in the fullness of time.
