Karoo National Park Beaufort West - A Few Hours in the Karoo National Park
For a very long time I wanted to visit the Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West. June 2016 my opportunity came and I am going back in spring.
There are lots of animals - Kudu, Rooi Hartebees, Eland, Zebra, we even saw a rabbit and a fox. And don't forget the lions and the now (in)famous Sylvester. But the animals are an extra.
The Karoo National Park is not about the animals, it is about the landscapes. It is about the wide open veld, and the deep valley and the Klipspringer Pass, and the ever changing hue of mountain and veld. It is about the Karoobossies and the stones that were thrown about during a giants's fight.
It is about peace and quiet. Serenity. Calmness that flows through you and expels all the stress.
And next time I will take charcoal and have a braai at one of the picnic sites.

The Karoo National Park situated just outside the town of Beaufort West. Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, the Karoo is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive in these harsh conditions. But who would have thought that this harsh landscape was a sea some 300 million years ago?

The restcamp has only 38 cottages and a camping, so it is very small, but the cottages are well equipped and comfortable. There is an excellent restaurant (breakfast is included when you rent a cottage).
Also a fine swimming pool and a bird hide.

The mountain passes and 4x4 tracks are fantastic as is the scenery and the photographic opportunities. It's one of the best places for Karoo landscape photography and a must see destination when visiting the karoo.

I make videos mostly about what I believe to be important in nature photography and for me, this is the behind the scenes story of how I get some of my shots. It's not easy to juggle between stills and video and I don't always capture video footage of the wildlife, a usable still and a piece-to-camera explaining the shot. When I do, I try to put it together to tell a story here on Youtube or to share some info that will help you to capture similar shots.
It's always difficult to pitch the information to the right level. I don't often talk about camera settings or equipment because in most cases it's possible to capture versions of the shot with different settings and different gear - there is no perfect solution. There is instead, a range of them.
I've found that this is often difficult to explain to beginners who typically want to follow a script.
Wildlife photography doesn't really have many scripts, we are confronted by a range of problems and it is experience, practice, and patience that offer the best solutions.
Beyond camera gear and settings, wildlife photography, like life, becomes a game of chance and calculated opportunity. It's this experience that I hope to share in most of my videos because this is what really makes the difference between a snapshot and a wildlife photograph.

SOUTH AFRICA wildlife of Karoo national park
Food and water is very scarce in the semi-desert of Karoo national park, but nevertheless there are many animals who survive.
When you visit the park you will see mountain zebra, oryx, common eland, red hartebeest, kudu, ostriche, springbok and with a bit luck the elusive black rhino and lions. There are two loops for 2wd cars and more for 4wd.

The cottages/bungalows are at a high standard most of them have aircondition and a kitchen. The bungalows are cleaned every day, but meals are not included (except excellent breakfast at Karoo!).

Karoo National Park Lions - Nov 2012
Very rare to see these guys... There were only about 8 of them in the entire park at the time. This viewing took place at Kookfontein on the 4x4 route. We spent around an hour watching these lions. Not a single other vehicle was in sight for the entire time. Magic!
