Where can I find Kastav?
Kastav, a beautiful little town in the western part of Primorsko-goranska county is a top destination for your vacation. It is very close to much larger cities, Rijeka and Opatija. Today, Kastav is de facto a suburb of Rijeka.
What makes Kastav a cool travelling destination?
Kastav is a town which fosters its long tradition and cultural heritage. This area was populated by Illyrian tribes and later by Romans, who built a town Castua on this very spot. The town itself was built like a fort with 9 towers. Kastav is built on a hill 378 meters above sea level. With its many parks and a big forest it is a very attractive to hikers and tourists. Kastav became a town in 1400, as evidenced by the Kastav Statute, first written in Glagolitic and then translated into Latin. It confirms the status of Kastav as an administrative and political centre of the late 14th century.
Why should I visit Kastav?
Kastav is top travelling destination for everyone who wants to enjoy the sea. Due to its very favorable position in Kvarner Gulf, Kastav has really hot summers and very cold winters. During the summer, temperatures can rise to 37 degrees Celsius (99 Fahrenheit). This ensures that it will never be too cold for swimming. In summer evenings, Kastav is a popular destination for a stroll along its many beautiful promenades between the forest and the sea.
Kastav is a very popular destination for athletes and adventure seekers. It has beautiful sea, awesome forest and many hiking and cycling trails. You can also ride into the sunset with your loved one on a horse, if you so wish.

This is the final chapter in my Croatia experience (at least for 2011) and it's a real package. I'll take you from Kantrida (Ploce beach), via western Zamet, to the road to Kastav (not getting to the town itself, sorry), then down through Matulji, via Nova cesta St to Opatija! And it's all new, no more than 100 meters of these roads can be seen in my other videos.

Our very first iPhone app, “You Gotta See This!” ( was a labour of love for the team. But, since it never was a commercial hit, we haven’t updated it in a while and when iOS 11 was introduced, Apple discontinued support for 32 bit apps and it wouldn’t work any more. With the free app not bringing in any revenue, we were prepared to let it go. But then, people started asking when we would be updating it and we realised that there is a bigger number of people loving this app than we thought. We looked into how much effort it would be to make it run on iOS 11 and it turned out it wasn’t that much. While we were at it, we removed the old sharing code and are now using iOS sharing which lets you send your panographs to a huge number of platforms and services. #38 - Kastav, Croatia - Bivio to Kastav and the Old Town
Finally! Ever since I failed to reach Kastav in 2011, I wanted to go back and try again. And now, here it is. But not just Kastav. This is also for climb lovers as I take you to Kastav the hard way. I start in Bivio area in Rijeka, at 20 m above sea level, and go through Matulje to Kastav, at 350 m, in 6 km.
The climb starts slowly, but begins showing it's true face as you approach Matulje. As my dear brother once said, when you are completely exhausted, you know you've reached the worst climb! :) And that was just to go through Matulje. The really worst part is the final climb to Kastav, from the point where I gave up in 2011! That climb is worth a grand tour race finish, really.
Of course, there's much more to this movie than just the climb, as you will see some great views, spectacular scenery and the Kastav's beautiful Old Town! In the last kilometre, I'll take you to the start of a forest trail which you'll see in the next movie as I do some hard offroading.

Actually, it seems Viškovo is a separate municipality and not a part of Rijeka (anymore) although everybody treat it as such. Besides, it's only 7,5 km from Rijeka centre. I hope the locals don't mind.
Anyway, like most other places in and around Rijeka, :) Viškovo is up in the hills. Located next to Kastav, it's certainly not easy to reach on a bike but it does have it's moments. And after learning of a nice park and paths, I just had to go and see. The web pictures proved not to be too reliable ;) but it was quite interesting nonetheless.
So, going from Kastav, up to the offroad paths, join me around this interesting little place above Rijeka. This is a real mixed ride with some climbs, mild descents, onroad and offroad.

Annual carnival bell ringers pageant from the Kastav area

Description: During the January carnival period, bell ringers march through the villages that dot the Kastav region in north-west Croatia. Clothed in sheepskin throws with bells around their waists and sporting distinctive hats embellished with sprigs of evergreen, two to more than thirty ringers swagger in groups behind a guide carrying a small evergreen tree. They enliven their gait by bumping each others hips rhythmically and leaping into the air as they walk. Groups may also include theatrical characters such as a prankster bear who regularly escapes the control of his two guards. When they reach a village, the bell ringers form concentric circles in the town square, ringing fiercely until the residents offer them food and a chance to rest before they continue their journey. At the end of the carnival, the ringers proceed through their own village, collecting rubbish at each house and burning it out front, involving everyone present in the ceremony. With variations distinctive to each village, the annual carnival bell ringers pageant is a way to strengthen bonds within the community and a valuable means of renewing friendships among the towns in the region while integrating newcomers into its traditional culture.
