Kasubi Tombs Kampala Uganda - burial grounds for kings of Buganda Kingdom (Kabakas)
Kasubi Tombs - biggest thatched hut in the world and burial ground of four Buganda kings (Kabakas). It burned down in 2010 and is being reconstructed. The ruling Buganda King is not allowed to enter the tomb hut - the first and last time he enters is when he has died. In a secret ceremony, the lower jaw of the sleeping king is cut off and handed over to the new ruler, but afterwards as well buried.
The wife of the dead king shifts from the palace in a simple hut near the graves. If she dies, another woman from the same clan takes her place, assuming that the king is only sleeping.
Female visitors have to wear a long skirt or traditional clothing like kitenge, gomesi or kanga
Kasubi tombs before the fire
The Kasubi Royal tombs contained almost two hundred years of History and remains of four Buganda Kings. The tombs were first built as a palace by Sekabaka Mutesa One in 1882, the huge hut also contained royal regalia like spears and drums passed on from the lineage of the Kings of Buganda kingdom which is more than 900 years old.
Discover Uganda's Kasubi Royal Tombs
The Kasubi Royal Tombs are some of the most treasured heritage of the traditional Buganda Kingdom - and despite being damaged by fire, remains popular with tourists. CCTV's Isabel Nakirya reports
Kasubi Tombs Kampala 25-11-2016
The Kasubi Tombs is the name of a compound of about 66 acres (27 hectare) which is famous as burial place of four former Kabakas i.e. Kings of Buganda (a territorial state within Uganda). It is located on the top of Kasubi hills, about 5 km from city center of Kampala. The compound consists of (1) main tomb area or palace called Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, (2) large area used for agricultural purposes, (3) ancillary graveyard and living area.
The Tombs constructed since 13th century, represent the spiritual heart of the Buganda people and were declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main tomb area or palace was originally built by Ssekabaka King Suuna II in 1820 (a deceased Kabaka is referred to as Ssekabaka). The main building that is seen today was rebuilt by Ssekabaka Mutesa I, son of Suuna II, in 1882.
Four royal tombs now lie within the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building, which is circular and surmounted by a dome. It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub.
Unfortunately the tombs were completely destroyed by fire in March 2010, the cause of which is still under investigation. After the incident, the Tombs were declared the World Heritage Site in Danger. The Site is now closed for repair since long. However, the guards/guide at site allow seeing the totally covered building from outside after taking illegal gratification of 10000 shilling (roughly US$3).
There is another important building near and in front of Kasubi Tombs which is known as Nnaalinya Palace. The Nnaalinya is officially the custodian of Kasubi Palace Tombs. Traditionally the King of Burganda is enthroned with a sister who becomes Nnaalinya and works as Assistant to the King.
The Palace of Nnaalinya is built just next to the King’s Palace and called ‘Bulinya’. When the King dies, the Nnaalinya takes charge of the main Palace. There is a beautiful Jack Fruit tree in the compound of Nnaalinya Palace.
I do not recommend going there for the present until the repair work is complete, which is likely to take years. The visit is not worth even 3$. It is mere wastage of time.

Kasubi Tombs Ruins UNESCO World Heritage Site VR180 (Kampala, Uganda)
Tombs of Buganda Kings being rebuilt after a massive fire at this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uganda.
ブガンダ王国歴代国王の墓は、ユネスコの世界遺産として登録されています。火災で焼失し現在再建中です。
This is a VR180 video. Use your finger to swipe or mouse cursor to grab the screen and look around. Best viewed in 3D on a HMD. No host. No voice-over. No music. Just pure immersion.
Located on Kasubi hillside in Kampala, this is an active religious site in Buganda Kingdom. Four Kabakas (kings of Buganda) are buried here along with members of the Baganda royal family.
Originally built in 1882, the site became a royal burial ground in 1884.
It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. You can read more here:
Much of Kasubi Tombs was destroyed by a massive fire in March 2010. The cause of the fire has still not been established. The site has since been added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger.
The site is currently still being rebuilt. Reconstruction started in 2014. I was able to walk around with a guide and check out the progress.
I hope to return when the site has been restored.
Please take into consideration that bathrooms are not available for visitors.

Ugandan Youth at the center of the reconstruction process at Kasubi Tombs
Over the past seven years, the local community of the Buganda Kingdom have been working hand-in-hand with the Uganda Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities with support from UNESCO to rebuild the Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga building, which houses the four tombs of the Buganda Kings and is considered an architectural masterpiece. The training of youth apprentices from the Buganda community is at the core of the reconstruction process. Elders from the Buganda community oversee their work and guide them in traditional building techniques as well as in intangible cultural practices and belief systems.
The video was filmed on 7 September 2017 by Karalyn Monteil, Culture Programme Specialist at the UNESCO Regional office for Eastern Africa.
In the video, a young apprentice is working on the ceiling rings for the Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga in Sept 2017. Each ring needs to be measured to have the same circumference. Around 50 reeds are used at a time to create the rings, and then more reeds are added as the ring is extended to the appropriate length. It takes approximately one week to make one ring.
