Panorama 60's at BAC Art Cafe
Out & About this week is all about art. Modern Nepali art to be more precise.
We dropped by Bikalpa Art Centre, popularly known as BAC Art Cafe, at Pulchowk, to be part of their latest art exhibition titled, ‘Panorama 60’s: Pioneers of Nepali Modernism’.
The exhibition happens to be a panoramic showcase of post-1960s Nepali art, featuring work from eight artists who pioneered modern art in Nepal.
By analysing the works of the pioneers of Nepali modern art – Manoj Babu Mishra, Shashi Bikram Shah, Batsha Gopal Baidhya, Krishna Manandhar, Ramananda Joshi, Indra Pradhan, Gehendra Man Amatya, & Shashi Kala Tiwari – Panorama 60’s aims to enlighten the public on the emergence and development of modernism in Nepali art. Modern Nepali art happens to be an understudied area of artistic and cultural history. And, hence, the objective of this exhibition is to help fill that gap.

Kathmandu:
Kathmandu is the capital and largest urban agglomerate of Nepal. The agglomerate consists of Kathmandu Metropolitan City at its core, and its sister cities Patan, Kirtipur, Thimi, and Bhaktapur. It also includes the recently recognized urban areas of Shankhapur, Karyabinayak, and Champapur. Banepa, Dhulikhel, and Panauti are satellite urban areas of Kathmandu located just outside the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu is also known informally as KTM or the tri-city. According to a census conducted in 2011, Kathmandu metropolis alone has 975,453 inhabitants; and the agglomerate has a population of more than 2.5 million inhabitants. The metropolitan city area is (50.67 square kilometres (19.56 sq mi))[7] and has a population density of 19,250 per km².
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major mountains: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population.
During Rana and Shah eras, the name Nepal referred only to the Kathmandu Valley; it was what people who lived outside the valley called it. During this period, British historians called the valley itself Nepal Proper. Today, Kathmandu is not only the capital of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, but also the headquarters of the Central Development Region of Nepal. The Central Region comprises three zones: Bagmati, Narayani, and Janakpur. Kathmandu is located in the Bagmati Zone.
Kathmandu is the gateway to tourism in Nepal. It is also the nerve center of the country's economy. It has the most advanced infrastructure of any urban area in Nepal, and its economy is focused on tourism, which accounted for 3.8% of Nepal's GDP in 1995--96. (Tourism in Kathmandu declined thereafter during a period of political unrest, but since then has improved.)
The city has a rich history, spanning nearly 2000 years, as inferred from inscriptions found in the valley. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu. Most of Kathmandu's people follow Hinduism and many others follow Buddhism. There are people of other religious beliefs as well, giving Kathmandu a cosmopolitan culture. Nepali is the most commonly spoken language in the city. Nepal Bhasa is the indigenous language spoken by the Newar people. Hindi is widely understood and English is understood by Kathmandu's educated residents. The city's literacy rate is 98%.
Kathmandu's sister cities (Lalitpur Patan) and Bhaktapur are integral to Kathmandu's cultural heritage, tourism industry, and economy; therefore UNESCO's World Heritage Site lists all three cities' monuments and attractions together under one heading, Kathmandu Valley-UNESCO World Heritage Site.

President Bhandari says Dapha is nation's identity
Lalitpur, Oct 28: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said the Dapha (musical instrument), which constitutes the Newar community culture, is the cultural identity of the nation itself. She termed the Dapha as the country's pride and prestige.
The President said this while inaugurating the Nepal Mandala Dapha Festival-2073 BS at the Lalitpur Mall here today.
Stating that the Dapha which is one of the musical instruments that form a part of the Newar culture has maintained its uniqueness and become a part of the national pride, she stressed the need of its promotion and preservation as it is being overshadowed by the modern instruments.
The Head of State called for the reconstruction of the temples and shrines associated with the Dapha culture that were damaged by the devastating earthquake last year.
President of the Festival Steering Committee, Dr Satya Mohan Joshi, said the event has been held with the objective of preserving and promoting the art and culture of the Newar community. He believed that the Festival will contribute to the protection and promotion of the Dapha culture and to sensitise the youths about its significance.
Culture expert Joshi said that the Dapha is not only the property of the Newar community but the identity of the whole nation.
It is chronicled in history that this type of musical instrument has been in practice since two thousand years.
The Newar communities from various parts of the country including the Kathmandu Valley are participating in the Festival. Various traditional dances as Mukundo Naach, Lakhey Naach, Kawan Naach and Dhimey Naach are also being organised as part of the Festival.
