Kathmandu's Durbar Square is the site of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, which was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and where important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch, took place. One of three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.


The Kathmandu Durbar Square held the palaces of the kings who ruled over the city. It is known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, a name derived from a statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee of Lord Ram cloaked in red and sheltered by an umbrella, the statue dates from 1672, the god’s face has long disappeared under a coating of orange vermillion paste applied by generations of devotees.

Hanuman statue marks the dhoka (entrance) to the Hanuman Dhoka. The entrance leads to Nasal Chok, the courtyard where most royal events such as coronation, performances, and yagyas, holy fire rituals, take place.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the main attractions in Kathmandu Valley. It is also known as Hanuman Dhoka Square. The name Hanuman-dhoka Durbar came from the statue of Hanuman established by the King Pratap Malla at the entrance of the royal palace in 1672 A.D.

Kathmandu durbar square is spread over large area and consist of many temples including Kasthamandap, Vishnu Temple, Indrapur Temple and Taleju temples. Kathmandu durbar square is much bigger than Bhaktapur or patan durbar square. Kumari Chowk at the end of durbar square was most curious attraction for us. We wanted to see the kumaris who are chosen as human incarnation of the Hindu goddess, Durga. Our guide suggested us to come back after finishing the tour at 4 PM to see her and glad we did.
The unique thing about temples in Nepal is their wooden carving, which are undoubtedly one of the best in the world. One of the striking feature is struts design, which supports the temples. Each strut is fine example of art with god, goddess and mythical figures carved in the middle. Only few temple inside Kathmandu durbar square are active and devotee can be seen all the time.

This Video 4th Part of Nepal tour this time we visit Kathmandu city important tourist spot's like Kathmandu Durbar Square, pashupatinath temple, boudhanath temple, swayambhunath temple, and nagarkot . we started our travel from thamel.
Kathmandu Durbar Square: in front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom is one of three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Several buildings In the Square collapsed due to a major earthquake on 25 April 2015. Durbar Square was surrounded with spectacular architecture and vividly showcases the skills of the Newar artists and craftsmen over several centuries. The Royal Palace was originally at Dattaraya square and was later moved to the Durbar square.
Pashupatinath Temple : The Pashupatinath Temple is a famous and sacred Hindu temple complex that is located on the banks of the Bagmati River, approximately 5 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu in the eastern part of Kathmandu Valley, the capital of Nepal.
Boudhanath Temple : Buddha is a stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal. Located about 11 km from the center and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu, the stupa's massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal.
Swayambhunath Temple : Swayambhunath is an ancient religious architecture atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. The Tibetan name for the site means 'Sublime Trees', for the many varieties of trees found on the hill.
Nagarkot : Nagarkot is a village in central Nepal, at the rim of the Kathmandu Valley. It’s known for its views of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest to the northeast, which are especially striking at sunrise and sunset. The surrounding scrubland is laced with trails and home to many butterflies. To the west is the ancient, pagoda-style Changunarayan Temple, dedicated to Vishnu and a Hindu pilgrimage site.

The Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the palaces of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled over the city. Along with these palaces, the square surrounds quadrangles revealing courtyards and temples. In this video I take a walk through Durbar Square which is about a 10 minute walk from the Thamel neighborhood in Kathmandu Nepal. Durbar Square is a historic area filled with temples and shrines. Much of the area was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and you can see the effects and the restoration efforts. There is a museum dedicated to the earthquakes destruction and restoration efforts. The admission for foreigners is 1000 Nepali rupees which is about 8 US dollars. Enjoy!
