Volcano erupts in Eyjafjallajoekull (south Iceland )
An Icelandic volcano, dormant for 200 years, has erupted, ripping a 1km-long fissure in a field of ice.
The volcano near Eyjafjallajoekull glacier began to erupt just after midnight, sending lava a hundred metre high.
Icelandic airspace has been closed, flights diverted and roads closed. The eruption was about 120km (75 miles) east of the capital, Reykjavik.
About 500 people were moved from the area, a civil protection officer said.
We estimate that no-one is in danger in the area, but we have started an evacuation plan and between 500 and 600 people are being evacuated, Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of the Icelandic civil protections department told the Agence France-Presse news agency.
The area is sparsely populated, but the knock-on effects from the eruption have been considerable.
A state of emergency is in force in southern Iceland and transport connections have been severely disrupted, including the main east-west road.
Ash has already begun to fall in Fljotshlid and people in the surrounding area have reported seeing bright lights emanating from the glacier, RUV public radio said on its website.

It was a bit scary, but still amazing to see, Katrin Moller Eiriksdottir, who lives in Fljotshlid, told the BBC News website.
The ash had started falling and we couldn't leave the car.
Three Icelandair flights, bound for Reykjavik from the United States, were ordered to return to Boston, RUV radio reported.
Domestic flights were suspended indefinitely, but some international flights were scheduled to depart on Sunday.
There had initially been fears that the volcano could cause flooding, as it causes ice to melt on the glacier above it, but that scenario appears to have been avoided.
However, it could cause more activity nearby, scientists say.
This was a rather small and peaceful eruption but we are concerned that it could trigger an eruption at the nearby Katla volcano, a vicious volcano that could cause both local and global damage, said Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland's Institute of Earth Science, Associated Press news agency reported.
As the eruption is taking place in an area that is relatively ice free, there is little chance of a destructive glacier burst like the one that washed away part of the east-west highway four years ago, after an eruption under the vast Vattnajoekull glacier.
Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the highly volatile boundary between the Eurasian and North American continental plates, with quakes and eruptions.
The last volcanic eruption in the Eyjafjallajoekull area occurred in 1821.

there was a big surge in activity in Iceland Reykjanes peninsula and Mýrdalsjökull (Katla) today starting at the peninsula then moving over to Mýrdalsjökull where Katla lies. There was also a large earthquake to the west of Iceland as well. Will the pulse move to Bárðarbunga at Vatnajökull ?

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. Located in the South Region in Iceland right by Hringvegur and the road that leads to Þórsmörk. The waterfall drops 60 m and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. One of the interesting things about this waterfall is that visitors can walk behind it into a small cave.

Very noticeable are the deeper dike intrusion of magma, which over time seem to overrun the deep region and reach at least up to the middle levels at around 12-18km.

Two unusually strong earthquakes have rocked one of Iceland’s largest volcanoes raising fears of a possible eruption of the “overdue” Katla that has been sleeping for almost a century.
Two earthquakes swept through the caldera of Katla volcano, southern Iceland early on Monday, Iceland's Meteorological Office said. The quakes measuring 4.5 and 4.2 in magnitude were then accompanied by some 20 aftershocks, AP reported. They are the strongest to hit Katla since 1977 when a 5.1 earthquake was recorded.Geophysicist Gunnar Gudmundsson said the situation around the volcano is a little bit unusual. Although scientists say the volcano, which last erupted in 1918, is overdue, there is no immediate threat of an eruption.“People have been waiting for an eruption for 50 years,” Gudmundsson said. “But there is no sign of an eruption.”

The long-awaited eruption which has been expected since 1960s might still be decades away, scientists say.
“It is quite a dynamic situation now, in the next hours and days following this, but as we speak at the moment we do not see any signs that there is an imminent hazardous unrest about to happen, Matthew Roberts from the Icelandic Met Office said.
Katla is situated some 140 kilometers (87 miles) from the capital Reykjavik. The volcano is covered with an ice cap capable of containing lava for 60 to 90 minutes – something which would give extra time for authorities to react in case of an eruption, Roberts said.

Iceland is located in a region prone to seismic activity. In 2010, its Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted spitting out an enormous cloud of ash. Tens of thousands of flights were suspended across Europe as a result of the eruption.
