Visit to Katong Antique House (Peranakan cultural heritage tour)
The present, is up to you to interpret and to reinvent. - Baba Peter Wee.
In January 2015, nanoKnowledge's David Tham visited the heritage areas of Katong in Singapore, and Malacca in Malaysia, to research the history, culture, and stories of the ethnic group/culture known locally as the Peranakan. During his Singapore visit, David visited Mr Peter Wee, the President of the Peranakan Association of Singapore and proprietor of the famous Katong Antique House.
If you are not a local or regular visitor to the region of Singapore / Malaysia, you may be wondering what is Peranakan? In this really easy-to-understand video clip, Baba Peter Wee introduces you to Peranakan culture and shares a peek into what the future holds as Singapore looks beyond its 50th anniversary of national independence, past 2015.

Home of a Peranakan Family since 1861
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located in Melaka, a World UNESCO Site. The house is a combination of three terrace lots that were acquired by the Chan family in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it was opened as a museum in March 1985.
Today the museum is still managed by the family with a vision of reviving the Malaysia’s Peranakan identity and heritage. By preserving this house for visitors and students the museum hope to honour the Peranakan spirit, keeping it alive for many generations to come!
