It is a Shinto shrine, and the head shrine of approximately 400 other Katori shrines across Japan, mainly located in the Kanto region. Dedicated to the Futsumushi no Mikoto god (the protector or military/army men), the Katori Shrine has been an important and very popular shrine since the beginning of the Samurai in Japan.

要石 （かなめいし）
古伝によればその昔、香取、鹿島のニ柱の大神は天照大神の大命を受け、芦原の中つ国を平定し、香取ヶ浦付近に至った。しかし、この地方はなおただよえる国であり、地震が頻発し、人々はいたく恐れていた。
これは地中に大きな鯰魚が住みつき、荒れさわいでいると言われていた。大神たちは地中に深く石棒をさし込み、鯰魚の頭尾を押さえ地震を鎮めたと伝わっている。
当宮は凸形、鹿島神宮は凹形で地上に一部だけをあらわし、深さ雛十尺とされている。

千葉県香取市香取にある神社で、関東地方を中心として全国に約400社ある香取神社の総本社である。鹿嶋市の鹿島神宮、神栖市の息栖神社とともに東国三社の一社。宮中の四方拝で遥拝される一社。初詣には50万人以上が参拝する。

Near Sawara is Katori Jingu, which enshrines Futsunushi, the kami of swords and lightning. It is said to have been founded in 643 BCE during the reign of the legendary first emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu. It was one of the only three jingus listed in the Engishiki from the Heian period along with Ise and Kashima, making it among the three oldest jingus in the country.

Kyoso Shigetoshi Sensei and his students demonstrating Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu Kenjutsu during the 42nd Nihon Kobudo Embutaikai held at the Nippon Budokan on February 3rd, 2019. The event also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.
Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts schools . It was founded by Duke Iizasa Ienao in 1447, when he retired to the Katori-jingu shrine in Katori, which was dedicated to Futsunushi no Mikoto, a tutelary deity of martial arts.

天真正伝香取神道流剣術 Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu (Suwari Kata Nuki Tsuke No Ken)
When Chōi-sai returned home, he offered prayers to the deities of both Katori Shrine and Kashima Shrine, the latter being a famous local shrine in nearby Ibaraki Prefecture, where shrine officials themselves reputedly practised a form of swordsmanship, called 'Hitotsu no Tachi' (the solitary sword). Even today the Kashima Shrine training hall attracts Kendo practitioners from around the world, and the chief object of interest for visitors is the shrine's sacred sword. Supplementing his considerable skills with assorted weaponry, Chōi-sai was also an expert in Musō Jikiden ryū yawaragi, holding the position of seventh Headmaster in the history of that ryū.[citation needed] [notes 3]
