JAPANESE WINE COUNTRY | Koshu, Yamanashi
Yamanashi is the center for Japanese wine. As a wine lover, I had to stop by for some tasting while exploring Yamanashi.
I started at Daizen-ji, nicknamed Budo-ji (Grape Temple). This is where grapes in the region started so I figured it would be a good place to start myself.
I also stopped at 3 wineries. Château Mercian, Haramo Wine, and Budo no Oka. All three were very different experiences from each other and I'm very happy with how my wine tasting adventure turned out.
Much love and happy travels

Meet the Winemaker (Episode 88): Katsuhisa Fujino, Mercian, by Debra Meiburg MW
Katsuhisa Fujino of Mercian Corporation gives Debra some insights into the Japanese wine industry and its 170-strong wineries. Although Mercia Corporation's winery is located in the Katsunuma area of the Yamanashi prefecture, many are based in the Nagano prefecture, and Debra questions whether the extreme winter cold is a barrier to winemaking, and what the challenges of grape growing in Japan as a whole are.
With Japanese wines staking their claim on several international awards recently, Debra poses the question to Katsuhisa -- what is the attraction of Japanese wines? Katsuhisa discusses the research and development that has gone into the industry since 2000, as well as the introduction of a wine competition in 2003.
Finally, they talk Koshu -- its qualities and perfect food pairings.

Wine tasting in Katsunuma
We visited Katsunuma in Yamanashi perfecture this beautiful spring day. There are a lot of wineries here and many of them offer tours to show how they make wine. You can walk or bike around the area by yourself and pop in here and there to taste the local wine. I want to go there again!
YAMANASHI PREFECTURE! The birthplace of wine in Japan????
On the second day of my Yamanashi trip I started off the day with a mix of Japanese & Western style breakfast at Hotel Kasugai. We then headed on to our first winery of the day, Katsunuma Winery In Fuefuki City. Afterwards, we headed to Lumiere Winery and had lunch at Zalkova Restaurant. Once we were finished we got to see the birth place of winery in Japan at Miya Koen, and got to explore the 100 year old Ryokan. Towards the end of the day we ended up at Mars Winery, a new and super aesthetic brewery in the mountains before finishing up with a Kaiseki dinner at Tokiwa Hotel!
